I read an arcticle about this subject and feel as though it should be addressed here. Some of the powers addressed were Invisibility, Super Strength, Flight, Immortality, and Telepathy. So I figured why not post a power and see if other people could find scientific proof regarding it's possibility.

Or impossibility. Sounds fun
Maybe in Xeomerica. God, I'm always wrong when I say that...

Anyway, I'm up for it. How about, say, pyrokinesis

The creation of flames would cause an immense heat so anything near you would incinerate (including you) If you could start it far away it would need immense attention and focus thus making you a standing target for however long it takes.

Meh. Not enough science. How do I bring about the flames? Energy transfer? I would need to consume a lot to maintain such heat. If not, it would feed off of my energy, or my own mass, making me deathly skinny until I fall apart.

Assuming the energy is made from hydrogen/oxygen/whatever particles in the air around the flame, the heat would not be so unbearable to one raised with it. Conditions, my friend. The cold does not affect the Eskimos--or people living in Alaska--thusly. True, too long and it would burn regardless. As a standing target, I think not. A pyro would only be able to use small bursts as to not burn themselves. Holding a stream, or charging a large fireball, are beyond question. They would need to be dexterous. They would most likely be a fast moving assassin with fire capabilities. Someone too slow would be a target, as you said.

Fire manipulation is the same thing, except the flame would not be made by them. A lighter or ans explosion, but the same properties. They can be slower because they can charge larger attacks (not having to be near the flame).

If a combination of the two, still at least average speed--probably on the quick side to dodge. Charging capabilities and fast attacks from their hands/etc. Weapons would get in their way, heating up and hindering their movement.

I laughed soooo hard!!!!! and I wasn't going into that much detail i was just pointing out certain things that would make it impossible.

And I pointed out scientific ways to make it possible AND impossible. Although, to be able to manipulate energy in that manner is quite a feat. It is not even done so to its fullest potential in a lab, let alone a single person.

All right. How might someone teleport?

Nightcrawler is apparently able to transmit himself through another dimension, and Hiro Nakamura does it by concentrating really hard.

Goooooooo, science olympians!

lol i'll take a crack at this.
Nightcrawler uses rips in our dimension to travel to other places that he's seen or has been to. These rips would slowly but surely tear apart our universe after extended use.
Hiro's use I would surmount to him pushing his being to another place. This would cause an addition of mass. But this goes against the scientific law that matter cannot be created so he may trade his body's mass with that of the air of the place he wishes to teleport to. This will negatively effect the ecosystems around the world. And even though some may say it won't there's always the odds of his matter colliding with other matter on its way to its new location. and destroying anything in its path.

Haha. Teleprtation.

Hm. Well, even if Nightcrawler were to transmit himself through another dimension, distance is relevant. He would still need to travel to where the exact spot in which he were teleporting to--just in another place. Now, time flow may be different there, meaning that it is completely possible. But, if time is faster there, he should age faster ever time he enters this realm. Considering how often he teleports, he should have been dead long ago, if possible.

Now, Hiro, on the other hand, 'folds' space, is how I believe he puts it. He folds everything over until he is standing where he wants to go. Honestly, I see no argument to this. Most of the powers in Heroes were scientifically possible (beside maybe precog, but people say they are now). The only flaw I can think of is, again, energy to do so.

The amount of energy required to teleport alone (not folding space, simply appearing somewhere else) is immense. You would need to take particles that do not exist in one place and put them somewhere else. This is arguably the 'best' way to teleport, but let me finish with Hiro first. In order for Hiro to do this, it would still require not just energy, but movement. He would appear in one place by bending time. To do so would mean that he has accelerated his body through time. An acceleration of that magnitude would rip any mortals body apart, no questions asked.

Now, the 'best' way to teleport. Quantum physics. If you look at a person, and turn your back on them, where are they? Everywhere, according to quantum physics. The chances of them still being behind you are very high, but their particles that make them up could literally be anywhere. Quantum physics states that particles are only in the place they are because you are forcing them to be there by looking at them(touching and all other senses apply, I suppose). If no one is forcing you to be in one spot (including yourself), teleportation may be possible. But, no one must be looking at you, you must have you eyes closed, you cannot be touching the ground and you cannot hear or smell your environment.

So jump with your eyes closed in a dark soundproof room, and you may teleport. May.

EDIT: Vince, I took AP physics. I win.

On fire: Shooting fire out of your hands actually would not burn you, as long as the fire has forward momentum fro your hands. If the fire as actually shooting, then that would imply at least some force from your hands, such as wind, pushing it in that direction. As long as the wind was pushing the fire, it would puch the heat away from you.

A good was to demonstrate this would be to set up a large number of woodships, and spread them out so that they're all close together. Set fire to the middle of them, and then get a fan to blow the fire in one direction. The fire won't spread toward the wind, only in the other direction.

Flamethrowers basically use the same concept, which is why they don't usually blow up while being used, xD.

I'll get to teleportation later.

Haha. Good point on fire. Let's see what you have for teleportation.

And while I'm here, how about someone do earth manipulation. That's a bit harder.

Why do I have a feeling we are going to break down the powers from Avatar now?

But yeah, reading that article reminded me a lot of our Corrupt-A-Wish thread.

Nah, just a few. They're just elemental powers. A lot of powers revolve around elements, so I figure getting those out of the way first would broaden our imaginations
