So, as most of you know, I deliver the newspaper in my area during the nights. I'm a hardcore paper-man through and through.
In any case, it's damn freezing out recently with the seasons changing and Winter slowly creeping up on us. It is a large pain in the ass to deliver these things, but I do it anyway. In one part of my route, I am outside of the car more than I would like to be when it's this cold. Sure, I could be lazy like the person who delivers the other local newspaper and just throw the papers at the sidewalk, but I'm not. From where they throw it to the door is an extra twenty feet, give or take. Not really a big deal, as it takes a few extra seconds for me to walk up and drop the paper right at the doorstep instead of winging it at the walk. To me, it hasn't really occurred as anything that was a big deal. Today, however, someone was waiting up for me to come by and deliver their paper. I got out of the car and greeted them, handing them their paper. What I got in return was a thank you letter and bag full of assorted soups to "help keep us warm". Those few extra feet made the difference for someone that much, and that action made my day. I'm really happy about this. I'm writing them a thank you letter and giving it to them tomorrow. So, Xeogaming, have you ever received gratitude for something small, or given it to someone and put a smile on their face? |

Oh I get this all the time. 90% of the time when I am doing my super-secret masonic stuff. Charity events and the like. Two weeks ago we helped raise over two grand to help 'Save the ta-tas'.
Then at work it's the little things that count. Like if no one is doing their job I am always the one who can multitask like a motherfucker. I usually get a lot of bragging rights from the managers. And just reciently I got a compliment posted by the super GM of Darden. "Dale was just an outstanding gentleman and I really wished he was my server. While he was taking us to our table I knew he was a good man and really gave off a family vibe. The rest of the workers there give off a hospitable welcome, but not like Dale. He was extremely polite and was quick to give us anything we wanted even when our server was unable to." -WAY TO GO DALE- -Karen Jackson Outside of work and Fraternity. Im always the guy who holds the door open for people. The guy who donates a dollar in spare change in a jar for a girl who needs the money more than I do. And I'm always helping people out whenever they either ask me or if I feel they need help. I mean, it makes me feel like a complete person going that extra mile to get things done. Either you are in, or you are out. You have to feel the sweat in doing anything that you do in life. |

I haven't got something like that before... that is really awesome. Compliments and occasional tips I get all the time. The greatest feeling of satisfaction that I ever got was a guy that had been stung by a stingray and was waiting for a ride. I went out of my way to get him water and anything else he needed, and he was really really grateful. It was just his expression of relief that made my day. Also the looks of joy and being impressed that I used to get as an attendant at the Titanic exhibit years ago when I could answer questions and give details that no one else could. Sure, my boss killed it by telling me to herd them like sheep but the guy at the gift shop loved me because I made him more money by pointing out books that had more info. | |||

Despite the bitching I do about my job, there are A LOT of moments like this.
I bend over backwards for my customers, but truth be told, most of 'em deserve it, and not simply because they're customers. There's the people who don't come in often, but the usually ask to speak to my manager, and they say all sorts of nice things. And there were times when I was the highest on the chain in the store, would smile and say I was the manager, but more or less in a way that would let them know that I could and would most certainly make sure they're happy in my store. And know what they've done? Sat on hold for 45 minutes with my coorporate office until they spoke to someone, JUST to say nice things. And then there's the regulars...they all come in specifically to wish me happy birthday and all sorts of things like that. It makes me actually WANT to make my customer service better and better. |

Reportedly, many customers at Dollar General have told the store manager how much they like me, because I know what I'm doing and I'm generally quite friendly.
(Shocking, I know.) Some have also said that they were worried that I quit (always "quit", never "got fired") when they don't see me there for a few days. So, yeah, some minor gratitude here and there. Nothing that gets me free soup, but eh. I'm just doing my job... and constantly making jokes about it. Professional, not so much, but (almost) no one complains about that. Elara: That's basically how Crystal Caverns, one town over, was run when my stepfather was there. Where all the other caves in the area stuck to a scripted tour, he improvised a new one for every group. Ended up getting a lot of tips for it, too, including a $20 tip from just a tour of two people. In fact, this may be why I pay so much attention to individual customers and so little to company policy. (or it could be because I think the people who make the company policy are morons that've likely never worked a day in their lives. One or the other, or both.) |
