About a month or so ago, I got back into playing Dungeons and Dragons. I'd been losing interest in video games, and they didn't give me the free-roam feeling I wanted with all of the limitations and storylines.

Now, I used to dabble in 3.5 Edition. I loved it. It was everything I needed to make me happy. But friends stopped being friends, and everything went back to normal, so I lost contact with the awesome that is D&D. Until recently. In Barnes & Noble, I picked up about $400 worth of 4 Editions books...and was disappointed.

The small .5 step between editions had changed almost...everything. In some ways, it has made it easier to pick up new players. The gameplay is simpler, and the rules are...less involved. Overall, it's not a bad thing. But very, very different.

Who else all plays on the board, and what do you think of 4e (if you've tried it out)?

I wouldn't say I play, but I did back in late jr. high early high school. At that time though we were just playing v3 and 3.5 I think, I want to say my friends all preferred 3 over 3.5 but maybe I'm mixing that up with 2.5 or I have no idea what I'm talking about.

It was fairly fun. I'm not one to really get into a role though and role play much. My friend was wanting to get a Shadowrun game going here soon though, I might consider it since the Shadowrun universe seems really awesome.

This. I know the merits and flaws of 4th ed and as DM I personally like to play it more. As a player, though, I prefer 3.5 or Pathfinder as it is much more customizable. 4th has a nice streamlined feel to it as well but doesn't offer the same quality end-game feel to it, unless you have a pretty good DM who knows what they're doing. A bit of homebrew rules here and there doesn't hurt either.

I kinda stopped playing D&D whenever my friends could not keep it going. We were easily distracted and it always became a creepfest with having "Catgirl Girlfriends" and "Owning a bar where the bigger the boobs you have the higher charisma you have" (Which started debates out the butthole).

Then I played D&D with a friend of mine who was really good but then a week later he passed away. I think we played 3.5 or whatever. Not sure.

Anyways, I have nothing else to contribute to this thread other than this:

IT'S D&D!!!!!!!!!!!

(I'm sorry hold on...what? Cmon...seriously...you have a girlfriend?)

I'm a personal fan of 2e, mainly because that's what I started off with, though I use 3.5/pathfinder more often then not (mainly to user friendlyness)

However, I hate 4e with a flaming passion. Gary Gygaxx would be rolling in his grave if he heard about it.

I agree with the WoW on paper thing in describing 4e. When early haters were saying it, I defended 4th edition and Wizards... and then I got my preordered books. All of the uniqueness of the classes was gone and it was generic power with different name here. Still, I tried running it, and honestly after six months we dropped it and never touched the books again. I am sure that new players of the game find it easier to work with, but I just look at it as a pile of crap.

I started playing the game in the dying days of AD&D, about three or four months before 3rd Edition came out. I liked the changes that 3rd made because it had a universal leveling system (no more of this Wizards need X experience to get to level 2 while Fighters need Y and Rogues need Z). Also, didn't really care for THAC0, but then again I didn't play for that long so I didn't learn all the nuances of AD&D that older players loved so much. 3.5 came out so fast that I felt kinda annoyed about it, but I did like the layout of the new books even if I was pissed at the nerfing of the Ranger class.

Then 4th Edition happened... some of the story elements are interesting, I admit that. But as someone that has played for about a decade I just could not accept some of the more radical changes (oh, hi, we aren't High Elves, we are Eladrin now... and Gnomes... wtf?)

So yeah... Pathfinder has become my new game of choice because the rules are simple yet allow for customization, and they have come up with an amazing campaign setting in Golarion.

I keep hearing amazing things about Pathfinder, but I haven't looked into it. Can someone provide a link for downloading?

So far...4e isn't HORRIBLE. I mean, I use a lot of homebrew rules and try to make it as similar to 3.5 as possible, because that's where I started. The phb3 helps with the customization, providing a section on how to create a 'hybrid character' (basically, what multiclassing USED to be like before they screwed it up).

All in all, I like it. I still miss prerequisite classes, but paragon paths seem to be as close to a solution as possible.

PDFs of the books can be found on demonoid.

Most of the actual rules and stuff can be gotten from the SRD

Info on Golarion, the campaign world that they made along with it can be found on it's wiki page

I'm actually really happy - two of my friends moved into the castle-house next door and they both love playing Pathfinder... looks like I'll finally be able to play again!
