I know you've got Broadway and all that, but you're really outdoing us here in the West in terms of drama queen over-reactions.

Hurricane Irene downgraded to Tropical Storm

Now with that said, I'm sorry to the families of the 18 who have died; however, one of the 18 was a girl who was in her father's car that crashed in an intersection due to the traffic light being out. Sad, to be sure, but attributed to a tropical storm? Hm...

Anyway, for the past couple weeks, our news on this coast has been swamped with your cries of anticlimactic disasters. I know 9/11's 10th anniversary is coming up, and that many of you initially thought the earthquake was an attack, but can you calm down a bit, please?

Much love,
California

P.S. Sorry to the rest of the coast, which has been making far less ado about their situation, and hope you all are well.

EDIT: This comment made on Facebook is copy/pasta gold: "Hurricane Irene is a bit like Paris Hilton. Constantly in the news despite not having done much, and has blown everyone on the East coast."

You know whats really funny is that with me being in GA we down here usually get most of the CAT5 hurricanes and they are indeed scary, but awesome as hell to witness.

Thankfully; we have not gotten any hurricanes in the past two years. But when we do, we take it like men and then share the amazing stories on how we survived hurricanes in the past.

Hell, remember Ivan? That douchbag hit us once, came right back around, and hit us AGAIN.

TWICE.

We got some of the wind and clouds here. I am almost sad that I'm not close enough to have seen it.

But yeah... they were making this huge deal... and then as soon as it passed New York City everyone stopped talking about it.

I do have to say though, that I kinda like Mayor Bloomberg for the statement he made about the people that didn't get out of the city in time. He basically said it was their own fault for not getting out, and the city government would not be responsible for anything bad happening to them because they made sure everyone knew to get of town, so if they try to claim ignorance it is a boldfaced lie.

Seems like Bloomberg's just trying to make up for his lack of response to a blizzard that paralyzed New York back in December while he was in BERMUDA.

I suppose he'll also be taking credit for the fact that no New Yorkers have died with how much he freaked out this time 'round.

Remember though, you have less trouble specifically because you get that shit all the time. Buildings out there are made to withstand hurricanes, earthquakes, and probably meteor impacts by now.

Earthquakes are rare here, and huricanes are very rare in New York. Consequently, there's far fewer defenses in place.

There's still some overreaction, but it's to be expected with how uncommon this is.

I agree with Bitmap on this one. The hurricane itself was barely a category 1 when it went through. I was outside all day that day. So fun getting soaked

New Jersey got raped a bit, actually. My sister lives RIGHT on the coast, and they were hit pretty badly. But, again, there's just a combination of things that make the smallest of storms help cause havoc right along the Jersey Coastline....

...and Jersey STILL won't die...

I'm unsure about how the harted of New Jersey translates in the rest of the country, but...yah...

<3 ya Astrophel. Although you're now in Maine I believe...but still. You know what it's like...fricken jug handles...

But it's exactly like Astrophel said, the preparedness isn't the same. So, yeah, we take things like a bitch at times.

My area wasn't hit too badly. The two major things they worried about were things that would have been of concern with or without that whore Irene. August has given us a lot more rain than we usually get, and they were more concerned about us losing power, and the rivers that surround us like...everywhere...flooding. And we have had some flooded areas here, but otherwise, the whore didn't take my power, and I was able to return the flashlights and shit I bought. I'm just sad my nieces and nephews and I couldn't build our fort in the dark.

Stay safe from Tropical Storm Katia, everyone. She's hanging back for right now, but is heading toward land. They're saying she probably won't become a hurricane.

Do hurricanes or tropical storms ever come far enough inland to affect the western Pennsylvania area?

It's possible, but unlikely. I know there've been hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico that have gone up into central Texas.

The news has been saying that Katia will probably hit Canada if she strikes land.
