So the Federal Trades Commission has that list you can register your phone number on. I'm sure most of the people on the board put their numbers on it.
Anyway, we've been noticing a high amount of telemarketers calling us during dinner time, despite our being on the FTC's list. There ARE certain kinds of people who can call you, whether you're on the list or not (sales calls from people you've done business with before, non-profit, etc), but these frequent callers do not fit those criteria. It's gotten ridiculous, so we've taken to getting all of their information and reporting them. Don't know what good it's going to do, but they really are getting to the point of harassing now. Anyone else going through this? (Last edited by Rogue on 08-02-14 11:36 AM) |

Is this a phone line or cell? I've noticed I can block calls on my cell, but I'm not sure how far that's gone.
I like that it's a bit easy to check numbers on the web nowadays though, so you can kind of locate where they're coming from. I had a nasty number call me almost 10 times in one day a few weeks ago, I was freaking pissed and so ready to finally answer it and just yell at them, but luckily never heard from them after that. Another similar thing that really bugs me is trying to get my name off of physical spam mail. The school offers, credit cards, insurance, etc. I didn't know after awhile that some of these have numbers you can call to get your name and address removed, but I'm not sure it always works... ugh. |

Is it an automated telemarketer call or an actual person? Because if it's automated then at the end of their message, they're required to give you an option to ask to be on their do not call list. If it's an actual person, you can just ask.

It's one of those automated dialers that when you first pick up there's nothing and then once you're on the line for a few seconds a person on the other end starts talking to you.
We went on the Do Not Call List several years ago, and that seemed to stem the tide of telemarketers, but this year it's like they all went, "Ah, fuck it!" and started calling us anyway. The other day we were all sitting down to dinner and got a call. Mom picked it up and this is how it went down:
One major problem on our end is that we don't have caller ID, and to make a complaint you need the phone number that called you. Dialing *69 doesn't connect you with anybody, sadly. |

I mostly get automated ones. They keep calling even once I select the "remove my number" option.
They even call my cell phone now! |

It's highly illegal to keep calling you when you've told them to put you on the Do Not Call List, but especially when you're on the Federal Trades Commission's list. They can be sued and everything.

You know all those times you've picked up the phone when it rang and there wasn't an answer for 10-20 seconds?
Those are a way to see which numbers potential thieves auto-dial will get a live person to answer so they know who to bomb with scams to get their bank/credit/social security information. Supposedly if you call them back from a different phone number, you'll get a message saying the number is out of service. |

It creeps me out sometimes.
But yeah I think the best way to approach this crap is to prank themselves over it, like your mom did above haha. |
