| Amusingly, I've been watching the History Channel's scripted drama, Vikings, pretty voraciously.
But why are they also putting out The Bible? Anyway, I really dug Hatfields & McCoys, and Vikings is proving to be a pretty great show thus far. If you like Game of Thrones or Spartacus, you can get into it. Also, going to try to see the Lucy exhibit this weekend. |

| When it comes to accuracy, it seems fairly close, but there's definitely liberties taken.
Like the main character's wife is a shield maiden, a very famous one from real life and legend, Lagertha. They do her hair when she goes into battle with chain mail on the side and the hair lady on crew has said that she's striving for a "rock 'n' roll look" (source: http://www.history.com/shows/vikings/videos/vikings-hair-design. But they do follow the culture and the history. The main character is Ragnar, a famous viking. And I mentioned Lagertha. It's a really good show. There's only been 5 episodes thus far and it comes on on Sundays at 10 (so it's the same time as Game of Thrones  ). |

| Go you. You teach the fuck out of them. Trying to remember what we went over in 7th, I just remembered we concentrated a month or so on Islam. You covering it with them?
Civil War re-enactment went well. We were right behind the Union artillery, and when they surrendered the officers ran over and hung out by us in the shade. Excitedly looking forward to hitting up the Natural History Museum some time this month since they opened up all their new areas and exhibits, which have been under construction for the past 5 years. |

They do American history, divided into two parts (pre-Columbian to 1865 in 7th grade and then Reconstruction - Present in 8th grade). And holy shit the height difference in these kids is amazing. There are kids that are still under 4 ft tall and others taller than I am. Freaky. |

| I imagine they at least don't have to build California missions from sugar cubes (strangely enough I never had to do a mission model since I switched from private Catholic school to public and I narrowly dodged that bullet).
Got any special project you're doing with them? But yeah, I agree it's weird they're not getting world history at that age. As I recall from my experiences (I'm including 6th since some places count it as middle school): 6th - Mesopotamia, Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, and I can't remember what else (but from what I gather they're teaching more about India, China, and Israel now). 7th (I was in advanced placement, and in 7th the advanced history teacher also taught advanced English, so she combined classes. It was cool because she would usually find excuses to take us on field trips and then based lessons around that) - Medieval Europe and the Renaissance, Islam and Arab culture, Chinese and Japanese culture, and Africa. 8th (Also advanced placement, but different teachers for history and English) - American history mostly. The Civil War and slavery stick out the most for me. I think we went over the Revolutionary War and Constitution. Seemed like the Civil War took up most of the year. I don't even remember going over the world wars. - Our English teacher covered the Holocaust and Japanese Internment (though oddly enough he was FOR the internment and worded it like the government was playing a game of tag and the Japanese just sat in time-out before the war was over and they could go back to their lives. | Yesterday was the 150th anniversary of the Gettysburg Address. I was reading it some time in the morning and for some reason got all teary-eyed.
Recently was also the 100th anniversary of the opening of the L.A. Aqueduct. I posted picture of this souvenir bottle of some of the first water to come through. It's on display in the L.A. Natural History Museum. Below that is Brandon in a yard in Independence, CA where they're keeping a lot of the vehicles used in the construction of the aqueduct. 
We must always keep in mind that while the aqueduct is a great thing for Southern California, it destroyed the well-being of the people of the Owens Valley. The 50th anniversary of JFK's assassination is in a couple days. |

| There have been a few fun history related things lately.
Bran and I watched a re-enactment of a Mexican-American War battle, held ON the actual battlefield it occurred in 1846. We'd gone to see it for the first time last year, but the Americans were played by 10-year-old kids. This time it was adult men who shot back. This past weekend, we hung around and had lunch at an orchard made to look like a Colonial New England village. Woo for drinking cider in pewter tankards by candlelight while the band sings shanties. Last night saw my first Marlowe play, "Doctor Faustus." I'd never read or seen any of Kit Marlowe's work before. I knew the story of Faust, but yeah, first time seeing "Faustus." Marlowe, along with Shakespeare, celebrates his 450th birthday this year. Anyone else intrigued by the Marlowe theory of authorship? |

And I am SO envious of you for the Colonial thing. So my friend went to Gettysburg a few months back and brought me a primary source as a souvenir... a first hand account from a civilian woman living in the town during the battle. I've only gotten to read a few pages because of distractions, but so far it is interesting. |

| Faustus was pretty good. You can definitely tell that Marlowe was well-educated. I'd known the story of Faust, but hadn't read or seen Faustus. If I remember right Faust is saved at the end of his saga, but Faustus gets dragged to Hell.
Pretty cool about the Gettysburg account! Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! I only suddenly realized a few days ago that my ancestors were at the first Thanksgiving. My dad and I are direct descendants of Stephen Hopkins, through his daughter, Constance. Hopkins had a pretty colorful history before that what with shipwrecking on his way to Jamestown and such. Anyway, I was talking with a friend about it a couple months back and he laughed saying his ancestor, Edward Doty, was actually a servant of Hopkins'. I'm kinda geeking out about the fact that Stephen, Constance, and Edward were all at the first Thanksgiving. |

| I had a rather shitty day at work on Tuesday and somehow ended up at the WWII Store in Old Town Torrance talking up the guy working there. Holy crap what a good way to spend the afternoon -- discussing how it had been the 70-year anniversary of the raising of the flag at Iwo Jima the day before and so on.
Was at Dickens Festival last weekend, which is always fun. |

| Went to the Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit at the California Science Center. What a goddamn waste of money. $20 to see it and they only had three or four of the scrolls (which you had to cram like hell to see) and the other old papers they had were just ones found along with the much more significant Bible ones. Sooooo much filler.
Glad Mom ended up paying me back for the tickets. At least the 3D IMAX movie on Jerusalem, narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch was decent. Anyway, the exhibit had so many more scrolls and less filler when they did it at the San Diego Natural History Museum in Balboa Park. In other news, been reading more about Ada Lovelace and Charles Babbage. |
