(Yeah, sorry for going crazy in this forum )
Well, somehow I was browsing around my favorite rom site, and Thunder Force for the Genesis somehow caught my eye. (Left to right sidescrolling space shooter) It sounded familar, so I download II, III, and IV. Wow, I'm totally amazed. The music is incredible, if not the best I've ever heard from the Genesis (it's rock basically, awesome videogame rock that is). I can't get II to work, but III is amazingly hard ... I've already gotten a handful of game overs. IV seems really good, it's a little different than III because you can scroll up and down a bit, instead of the screen being locked on one place the whole time. Honestly these games make Super R-Type look horrible. Here's a screenshot from IV. I need to check out the Gradius games though, I've only played the GBA one and I didn't like it too much. Well there you have it, instead of making a topic about Thunder Force, which I think is amazing and a any old school gamer should defininently check out, I made one about all sidescrollers. PS: If anyone wants to check these games out, and can't find them, PM me, I have a rom site that'll last you for ... well, maybe ever, and it's totally hentai / pron free. (Or you could ... view the source of the picture, hint hint ) Also for the record I use Gens+, it's good. (Last edited by The Xeogred on 03-14-05 05:03 PM) |

this brings back memories of Super Earth Defense Force. Only six levels, and it's pretty easy....
until you get to level five. Swarms of enemies everywhere; even with teh auto-aiming S. Laser, you will NOT hit them all. Then there's the flying ice chunks, and the boss that moves so fast he makes the SNES have slowdown. Without that slight slowdown, the fight's really hard. And then there's the last boss. If you can live through a minute of that fight, I applaud you. Granted, I've never been good at sidescrolling shooters, but... well, just try it. If you can't find the rom, I might be able to help out. ... but if you do play it, do not use Laser unless you enjoy pain. That weapon sucks hard enough to pull a golf ball through a garden hose. |

Can't say I've heard of that one, but by the description of level 5 (made me laugh ) sounds interesting.
And maybe I'm way behind schedule ... but was the original Battletoads always for the Genesis also? I just got done playing it, and it's the same freaking hard game, just with updated graphics. (Last edited by The Xeogred on 03-14-05 05:24 PM) |

Gradius 3 SNES was a tough shmup, but it doesn't compare to the arcade games difficulty at all. The Thunder Force series is pretty swell as well, but that's the good thing about shooters they are pretty much twitch reaction, they keep you on your toes at all times.
And as for ROMS as far as I know I have EVERYTHING covered (except GBA). (Last edited by Bloodreign on 03-15-05 03:40 PM) |

(yes I'm greedy)... then I'll start fill my drives with roms, and get a decent controller too. Until then, I'm bound to be playing Gradius III on SNES, trying to get by the little galapagos heads without getting mauled. |

I've gotten pretty far in Gradius III.
I recently went through about 4-5 boss fights at once, then went through this spaceship (It speeds up REAL fast, and whenever I died with lacking speed it was total chaos), and now I'm just a little further from that. It seems pretty long, but it's pretty fun. (Obviously I'm using save states ) |

I think I sent SNES Gradius 3, the arcade versions, the GB versions, and the X68K versions (I have more versions too). As for the PS 2 version, no save states no cheats, very easy, 1 cred to the Cube Rush stage. And the speed Zone, ahh the SNES version, man play the arcade version, it'll grow hair on your chest. The arcade/PS 2 and SNES versions of Gradius 3 are two different beasts, the arcade/PS 2 version makes grown men cry. (Last edited by Bloodreign on 03-21-05 02:06 AM) |

I usually use Hawkwind missiles, E (the beam) Laser, Reduce Shield, the Formation Option (two above-behind, two below-behind), and Force Field (I think)... the Formation Option along with Hawkwind missiles allows you to almost always be able to shoot missiles up and down at the same time, I just like Lasers (though when I use Double I usually use the normal one or Tailgun), and Force Field and Reduce are because I suck at dodging things.
Edit: one or two things MIGHT be wrong there. (Last edited by Tamarin Calanis on 03-21-05 02:29 PM) |

I need to get off my lazy butt on my days off, and try and earn my weapon edits in Gradius 3 PS 2, and stage select Gradius 4 PS 2. Weapons edit 1 is an hour and a half from being unlocked, the second one is 10 hours later. Stage select for 4, is about 8 and a half hours away.
Another good hard side scrolling shooter is R-Type, my second favorite shooter series of all time. |

Originally posted by Bloodreign And that's the bad thing, I own Super R-Type. According to Master Ace (not sure where he's been? ) it's probably the "worst" of the series. But yeah, it's a cool game, but I think I'd favor the Gradius series and the majority of the Thunder Force games over it. The one thing I dislike about Super R-Type is how it's very level based, and when you die, even at a boss, it's back to the beginning for you-with no powerups. |

Here's a good side scroller that's not a shooter, but man is it ever tough....Ghosts N'Goblins or Ghouls/Super N' Ghosts. I just got through playing the X68000 system version and used up 6 of my 9 continues on stage 1-2, only to see my last 3 used in 2-1 and 2-2. This game series has a reputation for taking no prisoners in the difficulty department, a series staple.
There are many versions of all 3 games, tell your nightmares of this series. |

Yup, I own Super myself. Honestly, I don't think it's too hard. I always seem to have trouble in level 3 though, because when you get hit you have such a high percentage of falling off the level.
But yeah, I've only totally beaten the game a few times, since you have to get that special item to fight the "real" final boss. But Ghouls and Ghosts for the NES, and Genesis? Now those are a pain. Super Ghouls N' Ghosts has really awesome music if you ask me. Level 5 (Ice levels) has by far the coolest theme in the game. |

I own Ghosts N Goblins NES, and Super Ghouls N Ghosts SNES, haven't popped any in a system for awhile, it's been PS 2 or emulation for me, I'm trying to get my PSX modded, so i can play Capcom Generations 2 (the 3 GnG games in one package), and the Gradius Deluxe Pack, Salamander Deluxe Pack, and Gradius Gaiden. The discs have been tested and were burned correctly, I just lack a modded PSX to play them on ( a friend is suppsed to do it for me for free, he's stalling for time, because another friend has a card that will fit in back of the system saving surgery), that leaves R-Types and R-Type Delta left to snag, pretty much giving me a library of good tough games to play.
Back on the GnG thing though, the Genesis version has an invincibilty code, the only way I ever beat the game for that system. I'd love to own a real version of that game, as well as a Daimakaimura (Ghouls N Ghosts Japan) hucard for PC Engine/ Turbographix 16. Blacklord, good to see you into Gradius, but I didn't know you played GnG. At this rate of good/ great classics this thread could go on a long time. (Last edited by Bloodreign on 03-27-05 10:44 PM) |

Trust me, I'm a pretty big hardcore old-school gamer myself.
Any Turrican fans here? Speaking of a modded PSX though, Bloodreign; You actually could maybe just get a Japanese PSX. I remember my friend had one, and we'd play burned games, and imported Japanese games on it perfectly fine. No modifications done to it or anything, it was just a very old PSX module and was Japanese. Don't take my word for it, that might not work, but I have seen burned PSX games played on an unmodified PSX. On the subject though: Has anyone played any good vertical shooters? (Going upwards) I remember playing a ton of games like that at Pizza stores on arcades and such, but I can't remember any names. |

Vertical shooters like Donpachi, Dodonpachi, and others can be seen here:
http://www.shmups.com/ You can find out a ton about shooters there. (Last edited by Bloodreign on 03-30-05 02:31 AM) |
