Right now im trying to build one with the little parts I have.

so far I have:

Case

MSI KM4M-V mother board

AMD 2500+ processor

256mg DDR Ram

40gig western digital harddrives X2

so far that's all I have... I will be getting a power supply, and a CD-rom drive also. I have an old external floppy drive laying around somewhere that I will be using if need be. Then later when I get a few more harddrives I have a Promis Ultra100 pci card, the card has 2 additional IDE ports so that I can install up to 4 more hard drives with out having to have a special Mobo.

Has anyone else have a plan for a home server or has one already? if you do what suggestions would you have for me building my first one?

Really it dosent matter about the computer...rather its all depending on the Router itself...

However the computer helps a little...as well as what type of internet service you have...(I.E DSL, Cable, T1...etc...)

HAH! I have a better processor than joo!

Dont really need to worry about the internet connection, because im setting it up as a LAN server, the only thing I will need a router for is to connect my main pc to the internet. The only thing the server will be hooked up the the net for is to do updates and such.

Plus im building the server to mess around on at the moment, it's more of a learning experience than anything.

but did you get your processor for free?

For a personal home server you don't need a very good computer at all, hell a 200mhz machine would do the trick.

Just brush up on your linux, apache, samba, ssh and ftp skills and you should be fine.

I know, but like I said in my first post, all the parts I have have just been laying around my room collecting dust,

*shrugs*

I have a trial version of windows server 2003 that im going to mess around with for a bit, then im going to switch over to linux and apache or somthing later just to see how they are. like I said before, it's a learning experience for me, and the more experience I have with some of this stuff.. then I will be better suited to get a job

Well you can mess with Apache on Windows. Hell, there's a version of apache that includes +everything+ (php, mysql, phpmyadmin, etc.) in one little folder and you just launch the start script.

But I'd HIGHLY suggest playing with the httpd.conf. You +will+ need experience with that.

http://httpd.apache.org/

That's really the best place to look for documentation on the apache server.

The owners of Computers 2 Kids are going to let me go through there storage shed and take what I want because there giving everything away to some PC repair shops around here, the owner Jerry got fired from his job for some lame ass reasons that I wont talk about here, but almost a week after getting fired he got hired with Intel up in the washington area. so they cant take everything along.. so yea. .im ganna miss them

sorry about going off topic lol.
