Driving home from gaming today I noticed my dashboard lights were dimmer than usual, and getting dimmer. Driving venomouslobster to our friend's house the lights died completely... headlights, turn signal, and I assume brake lights as well. I got it three blocks or so after I dropped him off before it died on me, in the turn lane of a major intersection.

Called home, told my mom. Called Pockets, who was at the friend's house. Then I went hunting in my trunk for jumper cables and waving cars that came up behind me to go around. My hazard lights wouldn't even come on.

Just before Pockets and Venomouslobster arrived a cop car pulled up on the other side of the divider from me, I explained what was going on and then the guys arrived. Pockets asked if the cop would give us a push to get me out of the street and into the McDonald's parking lot on the corner and he did (nice cop overall, even complimented VL on the two ball python's around his neck). Got car in the lot, tried to jump it but nothing worked. My dad showed up and checked out the car... being a dick the whole time. The guys wanted to slap him... but they worked more on keeping me calm.

We ended up having my dad drive behind my car, pushing it home the whole 3 or so miles with Lobster driving and me and Pockets in his car behind my dad. We think the alternator went bad... which is odd since we just checked it yesterday and it was just fine. So yeah, I need a new car rather desperately now.

But the main point of this thread, besides my ranting about my car dying, is to thank Pockets and Venomouslobster for being there for me when I needed it, for not making fun of me when I started crying, and for almost kicking my dad in the ass at the same time. They even put up with talking to my parents after we got to my house, not an easy feat for either of them (or any of my friends for that matter... my parents kinda suck that way). It made everything so much more bearable to have people there that cared because I was so stressed out.

So yes, thank you both so much. I love you guys and I don't know what I would have done if you had not been there.

...But then, how are you two working together?

Of course, I suppose that it's better than him having to be Robin.

How do your battery cables look? (the cables that hook onto the battery ~_^) If they're all crusty, get some baking soda and some water and dip the cables in it. Crusty cables = bad connections.

If it's not that, try getting a new battery before getting a new alternator. It's cheaper...

Glad you have good friends there to help you out.. if it weren't for my fiance, I'd never get my car problems situated... O.o

That seemed like a lot of trouble...
You couldn'tve just called a tow truck?
At any rate, yeah; you're gonna need a new battery.

The battery is less than a year old and was fully charged. It's some connection between the alternator and the battery or the rest of the car. I mean, the battery is in wonderful condition so it's not that.

And actually it was less hassle than calling a tow truck because then we would have been waiting there for a good 4 hours. Tow trucks out here kinda suck that way... and the last time I had it towed they stole my faceplate to my CD player, so yeah. Besides, that was part of my dad's dickishness, he refused "to pay to have this piece of shit towed back home" and would rather have just left it there in the parking lot.

Can't help on the issue itself.

But yeah, somethings like that just suck. Because cars generaly are something you have that is almost worth the most out of your stuff, I can understand how it is.

Okay, this is the weirdest thing in the world... follow me here:

The battery, when tested in that parking lot with some voltage reader said that it was fully charged. Thus the determination that it was the alternator.

My dad took the battery out and charged it just to see if it would help. The car started up with no problem.

I'm still leary of driving the thing, but at the same time I am so confused as to what is going on with that thing... I.... there are no words.

You know what, the same thing happened to me and my fiance about a month ago. All the power would die, the lights wouldn't work, the horn wouldn't honk.. etc, and Bobby thought it was the battery. We jiggled some electrical cords and the Suburban started up perfectly. It was strange, annd he said it had only happened to him once or twice.
