That's terrible, I'm sorry that you lost two of your friends.

Mortality is always a tough subject to think about, and it becomes a lot more complicated and troubling when death happens in your own backyard.

When you're young it's sometimes easy to disillusion yourself and think that you're immortal, but when tragedies like this happen it makes you worry about your own mortality, as well as that of your loved ones.

The only advice I can really give is to live each day to its fullest and live without regret.

Again, I'm sorry about your friends.

So, since some of you guys are FINALLY out of high school and some of you are heading for post-secondary education what are your plans?

Yeah, I'm sure there's already a thread for future plans from earlier this summer, but things do change. Also I wanted to know what you guys were planning on taking this year.

Since I'm continuing on at Long Beach City despite already qualifying for my Associate's, I'm still waiting on applying for universities and the journalism program keeps hanging on to me. Well... the magazine anyway.

So my classes this year:
  • Environmental Problems of Man (biology class) -- might need to drop this to make the magazine staff meetings everyday
  • Wildlife biology -- what I'm replacing the other bio class with once I drop it. Already enrolled, just gotta drop the other one.
  • English 3: Argumentative & Critical writing
  • History of Early America
  • Intro to Non-Western Philosophy -- I'm happy about this one since it's with a professor that I really like on a subject that I have a lot of interest in.
  • "City Magazine" staff

I'm actually really excited about going back to school. Anyone else know what they're doing?

I was more amused by the fact that they made the joke "liver let die," because that's the name of one of the last CDs this faire band did. They're a drinking band, so most of their songs are alcoholic rewording of famous titles and phrases: Whiskey Business, Lager Than Life, Bawdy Parts, Barley Legal, Liver Let Die.

    Hehe.

Looks like they finally took away the avatars. This is actually somewhat of an improvement since it makes the page much more compact and to the point.

Heh, kittybob had the box set and the movie and we used to watch it together all the time, but Garrett borrowed it and says it was stolen.

    Bad luck, I guess.

Do get the series. It's only 12 episodes. Well-worth it.

Oh yeah! That's probably what I was thinking -- that only 12 aired.

The unseen ones are actually pretty good. I especially like the second appearance on Mal's "wife," Saphron. Probably shouldn't put her in quotes because they really were married, but still...

If only you guys lived in Long Beach, I could take you all under my wing when it comes to registration and college bullshit. I've learned how to get around some things and respectably kick and scream 'til I get others.

Seriously though. When it comes to registration, anything and EVERYTHING can go wrong. At LBCC the computer system is ridiculous. You have to figure out how to get around the people who go by it no matter what classes it claims you're in and not.

Oh, you guys still need to go through the joys of petitioning classes.

Well, I gotta go pay for my classes today, so I won't be back 'til much later.

Though I don't condone these things, they are pretty useful.

    Rate My Professor

You might think all college classes are the same, but most of the time a professor can make or break what you think about a topic. Hell, my chemistry teacher in high school made me change my college major plans from science to liberal arts.

I've had some really bad teachers and some great ones. These things are often pretty accurate on what people think of their teachers, but take it with a grain of salt.

Because I keep finding these things, especially while being bored:

    DO YOU SNORE?:
I think I do. People have told me I do, but it's a very low snore.

    LOVER OR A FIGHTER?:
I'm both and neither at the same time.

    WHAT'S YOUR WORST FEAR?:
    Wasting my life.

AS A KID, WERE YOU A LEGO BUILDER?:
Yes, but I onl had a few of my own. I usually only got to really play with them when I went to visit my friends.

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF "REALITY TV"?:
Honestly I hate reality shows, especially with how scripted they seem at times, but I always seem to get sucked in if one happens to be one and I forgot to change the channel.

DO YOU CHEW ON YOUR STRAWS?:
    Only unconsciously.

    WERE YOU A CUTE BABY?:
Baby, no really. Kid, yeah I was cute... what the hell happened?

IS THE SINGLE LIFE FOR YOU?:
If you mean in the sense of not even having a boyfriend, I could live with it, but what I have right now fits too well for me to say that I'd be better alone.

If in the sense of not getting married, it's probably something I'd rather not do.

    WHAT COLOR IS YOUR KEYBOARD?:
Blck and silver -- it belongs to Zabuza.

DO YOU SING IN THE SHOWER?:
    Not usually.

    HAVE YOU EVER BUNGEE JUMPED?:
    Not yet.

    ANY SECRET TALENTS?:
*Tries to think.* Um... time was I could write a paper for a class within 30 minutes before the class, completely bullshitting my way through it and get an A on the paper while the students who actually researched and took weeks on theirs got lower grades.

    WHAT'S YOUR IDEAL VACATION SPOT?:
A city, town, village, etc (preferably foreign, but anywhere I haven't been before works just as well) with good foods I've never had before and things I've never seen pr experienced.

    HAVE YOU EATEN SUSHI?:
    Yep.

HAVE YOU SEEN THE MOVIE "DONNIE DARKO"?:
Yes and met the man who created, wrote and directed it.

DO YOU GIVE A DARN ABOUT THE OZONE?:
I used to when I led an environmental activists club in high school, but lately I've become apathetic. It's still something I'm concerned about, at least.

HOW MANY LICKS DOES IT TAKE TO GET TO THE CENTER OF A TOOTSIE POP?:
Mr. Owl says 3, and since I don't like Tootsie Pops I'm going with that.

CAN YOU SING THE ALPHABET BACKWARDS?:
I just tried and I could get a good melody going and that's typically how I sing anyway, so yeah, I guess I can.

HAVE YOU EVER BEEN ON AN AIRPLANE?:
    Yes.

    ARE SPEEDO'S HOT?:
    Not really...

    WHAT'S YOUR STAND ON HUNTING?:
I personally could never harm an animal, which is somewhat sad since I avidly eat meat. I figure hunting is only really necessary if you need the food or the pelt.

    IS MARRIAGE IN YOUR FUTURE?:
    Maybe.

    DO YOU LIKE YOUR HANDWRITING?:
Why is this question in most of these stupid surveys?

    WHAT ARE YOU ALLERGIC TO?:
    Certain insects when they bite.

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU SAID, "I LOVE YOU":
Last night when Brandon left just when I went to sleep.

    IS TUPAC STILL ALIVE?:
Yes, I just saw him getting beemed up by a UFO while he was waltzing with Big Foot.

    DO YOU CRY AT WEDDINGS?:
Haven't yet. We'll see if I do at Brandi and Josh's on Sunday. I highly doubt I will, though.

HOW DO YOU LIKE YOUR EGGS?:
    Hardboiled.

    ARE BLONDES DUMB?:
Only the ones who think that by having such a hair color or the looks they do entitles them to special privileges.

WHERE DOES THE OTHER SOCK END UP?:
I don't wear socks so the sock-stealing dwarves are not my concern.

    WHAT TIME IS IT?:
    9:56 a.m. PST

    DO YOU HAVE A NICKNAME?:
Several. The most used is "Rogue" and others call me things like "Geek Pimptress" and their "Fairy Geek Mother."

    IS MCDONALD'S DISGUSTING?
Only sometimes. Most of the time I'll take it, especially at the California ScienCenter. I like the McNuggets.

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU WERE IN A CAR?:
    Around 9 last night.

DO YOU PREFER BATHS OR SHOWERS?:
Again, I don't have the time for baths.

ARE YOU AFRAID OF THE DARK?:
Only what might lurk in it.

    WHAT ARE YOU ADDICTED TO?:
Comics, going to conventions, faires, masquerades, and anything that involves sideshow acts, most things foreign and new, Propel Fitness water.

    CRUNCHY OR CREAMY PEANUT BUTTER?:
    Nutella.

HAVE YOU EVER RIDDEN IN AN AMBULANCE?:
    Yes, unfortunately.

HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU BRUSHED YOUR TEETH TODAY?:
Haven't done it yet, but I will in the next hour.

IS DRUG FREE THE WAY TO BE?:
For me it is, if you don't count alcohol, caffeine, nicotine once in a while, and perscription drugs.

    ARE YOU WEARING SOCKS?:
    I'm barefoot... all the time.

    HAVE YOU EVER HITCH HIKED?:
    Nope.

    WHAT COLOR ARE YOUR EYES?:
    Brown.

WHEN'S THE LAST TIME YOU CRIED?:
Don't quite remember, I think it was last week, but it was a few tears because I was laughing so hard. I can't remember the last time I really cried because I was sad, though.

    DO YOU LIKE YOUR LIFE?:
    It's all right.

    WHOSE LIFE IS BETTER?:
    The grass is always greener.

    ARE YOU PSYCHIC?:
Not really. I'll experience deja vu among other things often enough, but nothing that would determine that I'm clairvoyant.

HAVE YOU READ "CATCHER IN THE RYE"?:
Not yet. Then again, I probably will never get to it.

    DO YOU PLAY ANY INSTRUMENTS?:
I play piano and violin, but not greatly.

    CAN YOU SKATEBOARD?
I can fly off of one.

    DO YOU LIKE CAMPING?:
    Sure.. who doesn't?

DO U SNORT WHEN U LAUGH?:
    I've never been that bad.

    DO YOU BELIEVE IN MAGIC?:
    It's possible.

    IS A DOG A MAN'S BEST FRIEND?:
It's been my experience that his twig and giggle berries are.

    YOU BELIEVE IN DIVORCE?:
Yes, but only when necessary. I more believe in not marrying in the first place.

    CAN YOU DO THE MOONWALK?:
    Not any more... Thank God.

DOES YOUR MOM KNOW YOU HAVE A MYSPACE?:
She would if I "had a MySpace."

WHAT WAS THE LAST THING YOU ATE?:
    Garlic Parmesian hot wings

    DO YOU WEAR NAILPOLISH?:
Nope. Don't wear make-up at all.

DO YOU LIKE SOMEONE RIGHT NOW?:
I like a lotta people, but I love Brandon.

WHAT'S THE MOST ANNOYING TV COMMERCIAL?:
Most of those infomercials when they're trying to hock a kitchen gadget and they have the over-enthusiastic salesperson with the skeptic host.

DO YOU SHOP AT AMERICAN EAGLE?:
    Hahahahahaha. Hell no.

    FAVORITE BAND AT THE MOMENT?:
I don't have a single favorite, but bands high on my list: Flogging Molly, Poxy Boggards, Wicked Tinkers, Reel Big Fish, Dir En Grey, and Suburban Legends. I'm sure there are more, but I can't think of them at the moment.

    LAST BOOK YOU READ?:
Novel/book of stories: Erotic Myths and Legends
    Graphic novel: V for Vendetta
    Comic: Eden's Trail #5
    Manga: Lady SnowBlood #3

Heh, Big Trouble. I remember when its release was postponed because it was meant to come out around 9/11. It's a pretty funny movie, but then again I'm a HUGE fan of Jason Lee.

    Let's see... my random recommendations:

Krippendorf's Tribe : When I first saw the previews for this movie, I thought it was simply going to be a waste of time. Later that year, I went on a cruise with my parents and it happened to be one of the movies that played on a loop on one of the movie channels. I sat down and watched it late at night and I really liked it. The story's about a widower with three children who is also a notable anthropologist. Prior to the film's story, he and his now-pasted on wife were given a huge grant to find a lost tribe in the south Pacific. Needless to say, the grant went to toward other things and no such tribe was found, thus our hero, Kripperdorf does the only thing he can to keep his ass out of jail: lie. He creates a completely ficticious tribe of natives in New Guinea and has his kids dress up and pretend to be them in homemade films, capturing the imaginations of the academic world.

Though the rating shows the film at a 4.5 out of 10, I think this film is thoroughly under-rated.

Then again I absolutely love Richard Dreyfuss, Lily Tomlin and Jenna Elfman.

Harold and Maude : This is one of those movies you just have to see for your own good. It really gives meaning to living life to its fullest and mocks the pillars of society. Pretty much a depressing young man meets an odd-ball elderly woman and she opens his eyes to the world and how much fun and life and beauty there is out there.

Orgazmo : One of Trey Parker and Matt Stone's earlier films that came out around the same time South Park started airing on television. The story and movie are pretty cheesy, but if you love Trey Parker or any of his work, it's well-worth checking out. Story follows a young Mormon elder on his mission in Hollywood who gets mixed up in the porn industry in order to pay off some of the expenses of his impending wedding in Salt Lake City. The film plays out like a bad porno with a story, but it's South Park-like humor the whole way.

    -----

I'll have more recs if anyone wants them later.

Because being ridiculously bored and surfing the web is never enough:

    3. Last thing you ate: A Fatburger with cheese. Mmm.

    13. What is your dads name: Guy.

    14. Why are you still up?: I have guests over who are watching DVDs.

    16. Favorite type of Food?: Mexican and most Asian foods, especially dim sum.

    17. Favorite holiday: Halloween.

    20. Where would you want to go on a first date: His choice. I really just go along for the ride and become impulsive in any which way depending on how much I like him. Ideally though, I'd like to go some place that he normally wouldn't go to see how he adjusts, a gay bar for instance.

    21. Would you date the person who posted this before you: I don't go for chicks.

    22. Has anyone ever sang or played for you personally: Yes... used to get random calls from guy friends who wanted to sing or play guitar for me in the middle of the night.

    30. How's the weather outside: It's a slightly cool, but not too cool, night.

    31. What song are you listening to right now: Not listening to music, but watching an episode of Cowboy Bebop--"Heavy Metal Queen."

    32. What are your current fav songs: There are too flippin' many, but I'll go ahead and try... "Kilburn High" by Flogging Molly (been my favorite since I heard it several years ago), "Irish Lullaby" by Three Dead Trolls in a Baggie, and "The Holy Ground" by the Poxy Boggards. (That's the best I can remember for right now).

    33. What was the last movie you watched:
    DVD: Jabberwocky
    In theaters: Another Gay Movie

    40. What turns you on: Good personality and sense of humor and someone who's open to going along on any of my crazy adventures.

    41. What do you usually order from Starbucks: Starbucks is evil, but at small, local cafes I order either an Italian soda or a hazelnut mocha.

    42. Have you ever fired a gun: Yes. A few.

    43. Are you missing someone: Only old best friends from high school. I've just been feeling nostalgic lately. But my aim's improving.

    44. Fav TV shows: Xena, Mythbusters, My Name is Earl, and Firefly.

    45. What's the dorkiest thing you own: *Looks around and references her things based on the Geek Hierarchy tree* Apparently my collection of X-Men spin-offs and my replica Renaissance swords, but I'd still argue my random collection of cult, amateur sci-fi/fantasy/martial arts and Asian films the US still hasn't picked up yet to remake or license.

    46. Has anyone ever said you looked like a celeb: Yeah right...

    47. What?s your mom's name: Lucy.

    49. Favorite band of all time (ONLY ONE): Can't pick just one and if anyone actually cares, this question appears in SEVERAL of the above surveys.

    50. Dogs or cats: Either's good, but cats are preferred at the moment since they don't require as much attention. It wouldn't be fair to the dog if I owned one. He'd be far too lonely.

    53. Butter, plain, or salted popcorn: Cheese. Well, OK, buttered and salted evenly.

    58. What are some things that really bug you: That people don't take responsibility for their actions.

    59. What are some things you really like doing: Going to places "normal" people calling you names for going to because I find them fun--conventions, museums, gay pride festivals and bars, Renaissance faires, etc.

    60. Do you like Michael Jackson: I used to.

    61. Can you dance: I can sway and look like I'm having a seizure. Otherwise jumping up and down and head-banging is as sophisticated as it gets. Screw all those childhood dance classes.

    62. Favorite basketball team: None.

    63. Favorite cereal: Kids' Cereals that are filled with ungodly amounts of sugar.

    64. Do you drive: Not licensed.

    65. What's the latest you have ever stayed out? I've left home and come back a couple days later, but if you mean just going out and coming home late, went out to work at 8 a.m. and came back the next day at noon and didn't get any sleep that whole time.

    66. Last time you went bowling: Lebowski Fest last March.

    68. Who was your last phone call: Jayson, but only to explain what "felching" was for Christina.

    69. Last time you were at work: End of May. Should start again next week. (I'm a student worker at my college)

    70. What's your favorite state to be in: I haven't been to certain ones I'd like to go to, but at the moment California and Hawaii are still my favorites.

But what about drug use? Most of it is illegal, but say a person is a marijuana-user, no perscription, they grow it themselves sort of user. That's outside of the law.

Or how about same-sex marriage, going back to one of the main topics people use "the pursuit of happiness" to defend? It's illegal in most of this country, it's not hurting anyone and two people are just trying to be happy.

Better yet, since this affects people within our circle of friends, minors dating legal adults. If they're happy who's to say that shouldn't be allowed to be together?

Altogether I think there are far too many conflicts and gray areas with this nonsensical "pursuit of happiness" and the slightly more realistic "happiness attainable under the law."

    Sorry, just playing devil's advocate.
