If God is all-loving and all-forgiving, why is there Hell?

I used to ask that when I was in Catholic school when I was a kid and the nuns never answered it.

Yesterday was spent helping with the taping of a few episodes of this panel show for PBS.

Today, heading down to San Diego for a steampunk convention.

Graduating in two weeks and a day, and it's crunch time.

I've got a story on campus veterans due this week as I wrap up my internship, as well as a paper for my Asian-American studies class. My FINAL paper, the 25-pager, is due three days after graduation.

I'm walking in two ceremonies - one for Filipino students, which is in a week, and the big one.

For a second there. I got really excited thinking Vulkar had returned.

But still, happy birthday, Kyoku.

Just got back from seeing Sucker Punch in the cheap theater.

Honestly, it wasn't awful. I liked it.

I know a lot of people have been bashing it for one reason or another, but it's like a female version of The Fall with these detailed fantasy worlds. It was fun.

Link

I'd been following this for a while now after seeing a video on it put out by Current.

Here's a part of it:

You can find the whole video detailing this anti-gay movement here: link

The full video pretty much showed how Uganda is destroying the lives of people suspected of being gay by putting their pictures in the paper alleging that they are.

The original bill was demanding the death penalty for homosexuals and lesbians, which the bill has finally steered away from.

What are your thoughts on this?

130 days into 2011 and I'm still managing to try or learn something new every day.

I'm leaving out a lot of listings because many of them would just be "Tried a restaurant I'd never tried before."

- Was actually in the moshing part of the pit during a metal show - felt tenderized
- Ate pecan pie at the iconic L.A. diner I'd never been to before

Heading into class to finish my presentation and probably get back a heavily marked-up rough draft with notes on how much it sucks.

I just wish I wasn't wearing my internship clothes. I hate these pinstripe dress pants.

EDIT: Done with presentation. Huzzah.

Posted on 05-10-11 08:32 PM, in A Cure for Multiple Sclerosis May Have Been Discovered Link

Drug that could stop MS discovered

London - A drug that could stop multiple sclerosis in its tracks has been discovered by scientists.

In a major breakthrough in the battle against the devastating disease, researchers have pinpointed the chemical “driving force” behind MS.

Without it, the disease does not develop. And when it is mopped up, symptoms are greatly eased, even in brains already ravaged by the illness.

The results come from experiments on mice but the researchers say they are “quietly optimistic” that taking the same tack will help people with MS. The first trials on patients are pencilled in for later this year.

The debilitating condition affects 2.5 million people around the world, and can cause blindness and paralysis. Current drugs are not suitable for all and there is no cure.

The excitement centres on two studies published recently which show an immune system chemical called GM-CSF to be the “vital piece in the jigsaw” of MS.

In the healthy body, it is part of our defence against disease, attacking viruses and other invaders. But in MS, it triggers a series of reactions that culminate in “scavenger cells” destroying myelin - the fatty protective sheath around nerve fibres in the brain and spinal cord - which disrupts the transmission of messages from the brain.

When Swiss researcher Burkhard Becher gave an antibody that counters GM-CSF to mice with an MS-like condition, it greatly improved their health.

Professor Becher, of the University of Zurich, said: “It is relatively easy to stop mice from getting the disease, so we waited until they had the disease and were pretty sick. This is similar to the clinical situation - patients don’t go to the doctor because they think they might get MS, they go when they have MS.”

The drug was also given to mice whose disease was similar to the most common form of MS, in which relapses are followed by periods of remission. Here, mopping up the GM-CSF prevented any further relapses, the journal Nature Immunology reports.

Becher said: “We are extremely hopeful but whether this form of therapy will actually help MS patients remains to be seen. Quiet optimism is the way to go.

“I am not sure this is going to work in patients but, based on the mouse data, I believe GM-CSF is a good thing to target.”

A German firm, which has no connections to the professor, is already trying to use antibodies against the chemical to treat rheumatoid arthritis. It plans to start tests on MS patients at the end of this year.

It usually takes at least seven years from when a drug is first tried out on patients until it hits the market.

A second study, from Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, also points the finger at GM-CSF.

Although the chemical was known to play a role in MS, its pivotal contribution was not understood until now.

“This is a very interesting development,” said Dr Doug Brown, of the MS Society in the UK. “It is early days and there is still a lot of work to be done before we fully understand what it means for people with MS, but it is satisfying to see that trials are already planned and we look forward to seeing how these progress.”

Mopping up excess GM-CSF may also help treat other conditions, including diabetes, it is hoped. – Daily Mail

One of the people in my American Studies class was presenting on misogyny in rap and hip-hop and talked about how music videos for the genre typically depict women as "bitches" and "hos," referring to them either being domineering hags or sluts out for your money.

She showed us a few videos and mentioned a certain video by Nelly, but said it was too graphic for class. In it, you can see men using the "making it rain" gesture and even sliding a credit card in a girl's crack.

The video can be seen below.

Now, I do warn that the video is borderline pornographic. Most body parts are blurred out, but you still get the idea of what's going on.

What are your thoughts on it?

That's an excellent point.

I'm trying to figure out how this isn't demeaning. Back when I was in high school, I used to watch professional wrestling, and in that day they had the Godfather. The Godfather was an African-American man whose gimmick was pretty much that he was a pimp. Whenever he wrestled, he brought out a string of scantily-clad women, which he referred to as his "Ho Train."

I remember remarking on the "Ho Train" to a few acquaintances in my classes, usually gym, and these girls would say things like, "I would LOVE to be a part of the Ho Train!!" When I'd be astonished and ask why, they'd answer that they were beautiful women and they would like to be seen as that and wanted and lusted over by strange men.

Not to over-generalize, but these girls I knew were usually from urban environments and lower class families.

So with that in mind, is shaking one's naked rear in a music video, by choice, empowering?

Really, Bitmap. It all depends.

I mean, the metal world is completely different from the rap and hip-hop one. In metal you could have a topless woman riding an armored tiger tearing the shit out of zombies or something. And that would be empowering.

In the case of that Dimmu Borgir video, I really don't know. I mean, you've got a girl on a leash there, but who knows? There's more of an artistic value to it, I suppose.

This discussion makes me think of Manet's "Luncheon on the Grass."

In its day it was under severe scrutiny for having naked women in the presence of fully-clothed men, but more contemporary art critics see it as more empowering than demeaning.

Here, you see a woman, completely nude. She is not covered in layers upon layers of clothing, which would have been expected of her at the time. No, instead she sits there staring at the viewer with an amused look of, "I'm here, I'm naked. So the fuck what?"

And just for fun here's SNL parodying misogynistic rap lyrics:

So I apparently spent a solid hour watching Bridezillas clips.

I'd never really watched the show before, but when I stumbled across this clip video on Youtube, particularly one that mentions one of the bridezillas getting left at the altar, I spent WAAAAAY too much time tracking down that clip.

So yeah... guilty pleasure.
