Prologue:

The year is unknown. The date is unknown. As a matter of fact, not much is known. Some say it is the year 2031. Some say it is already 3005. But then again, no one cares. The date…the year…the month…they are all irrelevant if we are all doomed to die someday. Technology has been lost to a war we could not stop. It seems that irony is contagious. We were smart enough to create a massive global war but we were just too idiotic to stop it. But that can’t be helped. Humans are always idiots. Perhaps it would have been better for all of the children of the first humans to have stayed in their mother’s womb until she withered away into dust and ash. But they didn’t. And thus, from the very moment the first child was conceived, the human race began withering away into that of a lowly species.

Some say optimism is the key to survival. That it allows us to see the pros rather than the cons. The light rather than the darkness. Bullshit. That’s what I call it. Optimism is merely a word. Something that people believe will save them but will only stall the inevitable. The world powers were destroyed in an instant and all that were left were its poor pathetic citizens. The greed for power and wealth turned great men into disgusting dogs. Yeah. This is my world. Welcome to Lyptica. Welcome to my syndicate.

Chapter 1: Shattered Mirror

I stared into the broken mirror of the disgusting rundown bar. Chairs broken, tables smashed, shattered glass, dead bodies. Yeah, your typical bar. I looked into that dirty mirror and I watched as three different reflections of me stared right back at me. They were about five feet and nine inches. Their dark brown eyes stared at me as I stared back at them. I slowly held up my hand and ran it through my spiked hair which had been gelled earlier. The reflections did the same. I wondered to myself if this was how my life really was.

Like broken glass, shattered yet deadly to the touch. I was missing pieces to my life like this broken mirror and the pieces just kept on breaking until they were impossible to find. I closed my eyes and slowly turned around to look at my handy work. There were three of them on the ground, shot about twenty times each through the torso. Maybe I overdid it. But they wouldn’t have minded after the third bullet. I looked at my left hand, my fingers grasped tightly around the handle of my handgun. Who knew such a small piece of metal could be the cause of such death. But that was not my concern. I didn’t kill them. No, their greed did.

I reached for my black trench coat which had been folded neatly on top of the dirty counter. I unfolded it and dusted it off before I noticed a few drops of blood on it. I suddenly felt a sense of rage and fury. Almost like a reflex, I took my handgun and shot one of the corpses in the head five times before the gun clicked empty. I liked that coat, despite the fact that it was so worn out. I looked around me, the bar stained with blood. It was all made of wood. Probably oak. That explains why it collapsed so easily. It was one of those traditional bars with a juke box at the corner. Shelf after shelf of bottles was nailed against the wall behind the counter, some bottles broken, some empty. I slowly walked up to the counter, not seeing any reason to rush. It smelled like piss. But I didn’t really care anymore. It is what the whole world smells like. I saw that my handy work also decorated the bottles with blood as well. I was surprised to find a bottle that was not yet broken and filled with a dark red liquid. I took it and opened up the bottle, draining all of its contents. Tasted like shit as usual. But who the hell cared? If you are going to die soon, might as well treat yourself to some of mankind’s pleasures.

Maybe I had drunk too much. Maybe I was just tired. But whatever the reason I was, I suddenly grabbed my handgun once more and began to fire at the walls at random like a raging madman. I then felt my stomach churning as if it was being torn inside out. I bent over and vomited all over the black wooden floor. I staggered back a few steps and grinned like a lunatic. I’ve gotten used to the vomiting.

I clumsily reholstered my handgun and reached into the large pocket of my dirty trench coat to pull out a lighter and a pack of cigarettes. My fingers shook violently as I reached into that small pack and pulled out a single cylinder of paper and leaves. I played it in between my two lips and began to light the lighter as I inhaled deeply. Disgusting. I threw the pack of cigarettes at one of the corpses. His face was so badly shot that it was kind of hard to tell what he looked like. The same went to the other two bodies. But it didn’t really matter. No one but me would ever see those cadavers ever again. I reached into my pocket once more to pull out a small bottle of clear liquid. I twisted off the plastic cap and began to pour all the contents onto the cadavers and the wooden floor.

In a slight daze from the hard drink, I made my way to the doorway, staggering. “Help yourself to the cigarettes”, I managed to say as my lighter roared with life. I grinned like a psychopath as I took my flaming lighter and threw it on top of one of those corpses. Oh, the magnificence of how it burned! Within a single second, their bodies erupted into flames as if it were destiny. The flames began licking at the wooden floor, tables, and chairs and like a disease it spread throughout the bar until almost everything was covered in that red elemental teardrop. Instead of running away as far as I could, I watched from the doorway as the flames started to look at that shattered mirror I was staring at earlier. Yeah. That was how my life was. Shattered, broken, and in flames.

Wow, a first person narrative... and very nicely done too! Love the comparison with the mirror I must say... now what else is going to happen?

I've just read the first chapter. It's got me wondering what exactly the title pertains to. "Massive Global War". I guess it must have something to do with that. Or the fact that people are getting their faces blown off and corpses charred.

Keep it coming Sparda.
