Last night I picked up Galaxy Quest and I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell at Wal-Mart for $5 each.
I've seen Galaxy Quest many times, but I'd never seen the other one, although I had heard quite a bit about it. Nothing about the plot, however. I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell is based on the short stories of Tucker Max about his misadventures with sex and dating. Usually the stories are beyond unflattering to women and himself. He's pretty open about the fact that he's arrogant and only interested in getting laid. He's sort of like Maddox, in that he started out as a free thing on the internet, got a book deal, and now he's raking it in doing his idea of telling-it-like-it-is. I got the "Unrated and Unapologetic" edition of the film. The movie, which actually has a story, isn't terrible, but I could see why a majority of people hated it. There isn't graphic sex, but there's arguably graphic shitting. I'll give Max this: it's amazingly honest in how he portrays himself. He doesn't make himself a hero at all. |

So the nominations were announced today.
I haven't seen The Social Network, but it took Best Picture at the Golden Globes, which are sort of a sampler for how the Oscars go. Kinda depressing that a dramatization over the creation of Facebook is a contender. But it looks like the Oscars are keeping the whole having 10 nominations for Best Picture. A friend of mine is raging that Tron didn't get any other technical awards (they're only nominated for sound editing). Frankly, I think Iron Man 2 shouldn't be up for visual effects and that spot should have either gone to Tron or Scott Pilgrim. Anyway, go True Grit! So, thoughts? |

In my humble opinion, it was depressing that the idea of a Facebook movie was made at all.
Didn't say it needed to have its awards and nominations taken away, though. I'll see it eventually. Who knows? I might like it. I am definitely digging the supporting actress category, most especially for Hailee Steinfeld and Amy Adams. I am surprised to only see three noms for Best Animated Feature. |

I suddenly realized I started last year visiting Wyatt Earp's grave (he's buried just south of San Francisco), and spent New Year's eve visiting the graves of the McLaurys and Billy Clanton, who were all killed at the OK Corral on the opposing side.
I'd say that's weird, but I'm a history geek, so I giggled like a school girl. |

Sorry, True, had to edit the embed code. Stupid YouTube changed their default coding and it's not compatible with the board.
But YES, Adam West is the shit. "Paul... that's a person's name!" (Last edited by Rogue on 01-26-11 06:51 PM) |

Got Oldboy through Netflix last week. It's kind of a mindfuck. You can sort of see what's coming, but you don't see EVERYTHING.
Seriously, bravo Korea for coming out with some amazing films and putting up some stiff competition for Hollywood and the rest. |

Fuck not being allowed to wear jeans to work (sound familiar, Elara?). The magazine I'm working for (which is more of a PR thing ) is more of a business office where no one's allowed to wear jeans, and so the intern probably shouldn't wear them either.
Fuck not owning non-jean pants. Fuck not having any money to do anything. Fuck having huge plans for something near the end of the year and being miserable now because of all the bullshit that's arising over the cost of things and so on. I'm feeling physically ill over it at this point. I knew I freaking jinxed it. FUCK. (Last edited by Rogue on 01-26-11 11:42 PM) |

Brandon snores too. It really sucks if I wake up in the middle of the night, because it's extremely difficult to get back to sleep should he be switched to his extra-loud snore mode.
Fuck the fact that he has asthma and allergies as well. Fuck feeling guilty about not working on papers and stuff WHEN THERE'S NOTHING I SHOULD BE WORKING ON YET. Damn school finally programming me to do homework and projects. Fuck looking forward to the greatest year ever and having my thunderous excitement dashed by worries and shouting people along with the scheming of family members. |

I suppose it's the excitement and stress culminating in a completely sleepless night that you're somehow able to sit through and then get up on time for the thing you need to do. I've got my second day of my internship tomorrow and I need to be there by 8:30.
But yeah, so my internship. Started a couple days ago. I'm writing (actually re-writing) news briefs. Tomorrow's my first 9-5 day. Started classes this week too. I'm taking Asian American Film & Video, the Proseminar for American studies, and the corresponding class for my internship. Thankfully the film class is like a couple writing assignments and a group presentation. The Proseminar, however, is pretty much writing a dissertation that we have to brainstorm and talk with the professor about in private, then present on and turn in AFTER classes are supposed to be over already. I'm walking at graduation and I STILL have to turn this 25-page paper in the next week. On top of all this, there's the stress about money and how to make a lot of it quickly. Shit... I really don't know what I'm going to do. |

While I'm also in California, I'm about 10 miles from the ocean. It's pretty sunny right now. It's still morning, so it isn't very warm yet (temp says it's 48 degrees right now). The high is going to be 77 degrees today.
Over the last few months it's been insanely rainy. On all three of the road trips I took during winter break, when I left Southern California, it was pouring. On our way into Arizona, after Christmas, there were five serious accidents and two mudslides onto the freeway. Cali is used to rain, but not that much of it. |

Honestly, no surprise. They're privately owned, and much like also-privately-owned In-N-Out, they were started by a Christian. Chick-fil-As are closed on Sundays, because they believe in honoring the Lord's day.
I'm an adamant supporter of gay rights, and I always will be. But I'm an even bigger supporter of being allowed to believe what you want and so on. It's their right to give, but then again, it's the consumers' right to not buy. I probably won't eat there any time soon -- Mostly for the fact that they are a bit pricey for a simple chicken sandwich and waffle fries and I've never found myself craving anything they offer. Man... just... fuck. I really can't figure where a person comes from that she could just kill her children, pre-meditatively at that, for pretty much being teenagers.
If my mom had been this insane, I would've been offed over a decade ago. Seriously, though, she was probably leading a trophy wife kinda life and faced with stress decided to dispense with her idea of the problem. |

Fuck you, Cerritos library employee. I have lived in Cerritos for more than 25 years. How dare you speak to me in such a rude manner.
I finally received an official piece of mail (tax info from Cal State) to bring in to prove that I live in this city and I get yelled at and belittled for not bringing in a water bill or something of the like and am told to leave. Yeah, your boss will be getting an angry letter. You're probably just a volunteer, but fuck you all the same. |

Was picking avocados in the backyard yesterday when a cool ocean breeze went through the yard.
It's been pretty sunny lately, though it was pretty hazy in L.A. yesterday too. You could barely see downtown from Griffith Park. It might rain some time this week, so that ought to clear the skies nicely for a couple days after. |

Darkwing Duck was definitely up there, as were Animaniacs and their predecessor, Tiny Toon Adventures.
Other things like Duck Tales and Ghostbusters (Extreme Ghostbusters, which came in the late '90s was my favorite) rank pretty highly. I, however, was one of those kids who rushed home to watch PBS, though. My favorite things were Ghostwriter, Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?, Bill Nye the Science Guy, Kratt's Kreatures, and every else that came along. The cartoon series, Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego?, was another favorite. I got into anime when I was 8. Ranma 1/2 was my favorite. Then Sailor Moon came to America, and I got into that, followed by Samurai Pizza Cats. |

Finally finished "The Wrestler." Not bad, but the ending is pretty abrupt.
I bought it last month out of a bargain bin at Wal-Mart. It was well-worth the $5. |
