For some reason I completely missed this thread.

I'll probably start up the usual meme thread about the past year. I'm a sucker for meaningless surveys.
Drove home from the High Desert on Monday, after going to places like Manzanar internment camp and Burro Schmidt's tunnel. Went straight to our friend's new year's eve party, where they had this Mason jar of moonshine and I was the only one willing to drink it. It was a good night. Can't. Stop. Watching. BREAKING BAD.
I started on it while up in Ridgecrest right after Christmas. With nothing to do but stream Netflix, Brandon and I decided to start on it... and yeah, we're addicted. |

Sounds like fights I have with Brandon sometimes.
Don't know what to tell you. He shouldn't have called you a liar, and yeah, if he wanted a certain thing he should have just got it himself. So what's going on with the camp ground they were supposedly working on? |

This is really just the 2011 one copy/pasted with the years changed. Feel free to fill it out too.
Was going to fill it out and post it sooner, but was way to busy with working Ops for an anime convention this weekend. What have you done in 2012 that you have never done before? - Saw the Space Shuttle Endeavour fly by my bedroom window, attended a midget wedding, made a bunch of photomanipulated pictures (one was eventually signed by Kirk Hammet), fed ostriches, crashed a Klingon bar party (and got really buzzed), pet a bunch of different Hemingway cats, went in costume to a convention, saw Venus cross in front of the sun, Brandon and I were background actors for a bunch of different projects, celebrated an 8th anniversary with someone, attended Bring Your Own Big Wheel, went to a steampunk tea party, drove down the California coast in a UHaul while sleep deprived and shouting TV theme songs at each other to stay awake, attended a steampunk picnic at the L.A. Zoo ruins, defrosted my parents' freezer, attended a pantsless horror party, went to the Civil War re-enactment in Huntington Beach, kissed someone while being electrocuted, went out to those apple orchards in Oak Glen during the fall, rode in a big orange balloon, and ate a whole lot of different foods and went to different places. Did you keep your new years resolution from this year, and will you make one for next year? - For the most part, and I'm just going to let the same resolution ride. Did anyone close to you give birth? - Sara had little Loralei in February. Did anyone close to you die? - My neighbor from across the street. He was the last of my favorite neighbors since Mrs. Sato passed on a few years ago. Where did you travel to in 2012? - Mostly stayed in California, going up and down the coast a few times and onto the other side of the Sierra Nevadas a couple times. Went to Arizona once. What would you like to have in 2013 that you lacked in 2012? - Family harmony. Everyone was at each other's throats this year over my grandmother and her money. What dates from 2012 will you have etched in your memory, and why? - Many of the things listed in answer to the first question: the midget wedding, watching the Endeavour fly by my house, etc. What was your biggest achievement of the year? - Hitting 8 years with Brandon, doing background for "The Guild," dressing up like a zombie and killing 12 people, and managing to keep my resolution of trying new things. What was your biggest failure? - Ended up caretaking for my grandmother (which wasn't the low point), and having my aunt be an absolute cunt about everything. Taking my grandmother to the hospital, unconscious with a face covered in bruises was probably where the year bottomed out, especially surrounded by people in the waiting room who kept glaring at me, thinking I did it. Did you suffer injury or illness? - Jammed my finger while being a zombie. Still have a blood clot under my nail and it still hurts when I bend it sometimes. What was the best thing you bought? - No really remarkable purchases this year. I paid for Brandon's last semester in school. He's got this semester left to go. Well... I did buy a big bag of leather while at Arizona faire for $7. Whose behavior merited celebration? - Brandon's, I suppose. I found him a job and he's finally going to finish school. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed? - Auntie Beth's was probably the worst of the worst, but also whoever at LBCC thought it would be a great idea to get rid of like 30 academic programs including sound engineering (Brandon's major), automotive, airplane maintenance, among others. Also Rey's wife... absolutely despicable. Where did most of your money go? - When I was getting paid for watching Lola, all my money pretty much went to paying for food and gas for Brandon and me, as well as tickets, his insurance, his schooling, his books, and anything else that came along. I've been dead broke for a while now. What did you get really, really, really excited about? - Well, I wasn't expecting to see the Endeavour fly by the window, and when it did (twice) I jumped up and down shouting for Brandon to get the camera. Super surreal experience. Also, got to sit in the front row and watch Val Kilmer do a one-man show as Mark Twain. It was AWESOME. What song will always remind you of 2012? - Fuckin' "Gangnam Style" all the way. Compared to this time last year, you are: a) Happier or Sadder? - About the same. I smile more for no reason these days. b) Thinner or Fatter? - Also about the same, but fatter, I expect. c) Richer or Poorer? - POORER. What do you wish you would have done more of? - Attempted to make friends. What do you wish you would have done less of? - Been negative, I suppose. How did you spend New Year's Eve? (December 31, 2011) - Hiked Solstice Canyon and Brandon fell down while sitting in the burned out bathtub, went to Cheryl's for pantsless new year's eve party (wore my steampunk costume and Brandon wore a kilt that was thrown together an hour before we left). Danced with Lee in the wine aisle. How did you spend New Year's Day? (January 1) - Hiked to the Bat Cave in Griffith Park, then drove across the Shakespeare Bridge. Apparently. I dunno. I'm just reading what I wrote down. How did you spend Valentine's Day? (February 14) - Drove out to Ridgecrest, apparently. Took the long way so we could eat lunch in Bakersfield and pick up a growler of beer from one of the breweries along the way for Brandon's dad. Drove through Kern County, along the rapids and through Walker Pass. We saw an eagle sitting by the side of the road. Maybe he was hitchhiking? The next day we drove out to the Trona Pinnacles. How did you spend St. Patrick's Day? (March 17) - Looks like I was at WonderCon, in costume, and then afterward Brandon and I hung around 10Forward and then went to see my friend's last Rocky Horror Picture Show performance with our old cast. How did you spend Easter? (April 8) - I was in San Francisco. According to my journal: "Took BART into San Francisco, go by Paxton Gate (taxidermy shop), brunch at Phoenix Irish Bar -- had the bacon boxty (potato pancakes w/ Irish bacon, poached eggs, and Hollandaise sauce. Watch Bring Your Own Big Wheel race -- down Vermont Street (the real crookedest street in SF). Picked up a ZipCar and went to the Presidio. Found beautiful garden with cherry blossoms overlooking the Palace of Fine Arts -- found the Yoda statue. Watch the sun setting over Sutro Baths. Dinner in Japan Town at Kushi Tsuru -- had the tonkotsu ramen. See a homeless man collapse in the street and a guy in the Mission trying to sell a dog." How did you spend Cinco de Mayo? (May 5) - *Checks journal* Brandon and I did a Free Comic Book Day comic shop crawl. We later watched the supermoon rise, and then went to see "Re-Animator: The Musical!" again with Lee. How did you spend the 4th of July? (July 4) - Party at Marty and Becky's. How did you spend Patriot Day? (September 11) - I think we were at Michelle's so Brandon could fix her computer. How did you spend Talk Like a Pirate Day? (September 19)? - Mom's birthday. Went to dinner with her, Dad, and Brandon. How did you spend Halloween? (October 31) - Went to the West Hollywood Halloween Carnaval, saw Hedwig and the Angry Inch perform, and looked at everyone's costumes. How did you spend Thanksgiving? (November 22) - Had some family over. Mom performed an exorcism on Lola (which was mostly her throwing holy water on Lola while she prayed that the devil leave her body), a former Japanese intern killed a fly by crushing it in her fist after catching it in mid-air, and my uncle brought a couple of my cousins and his cheating whore of a wife. We were expecting him and the kids, but not her. How did you spend Christmas? (December 25) - Spent time at home with family before heading out to Thai Town for dinner with Lee. Did you fall in love in 2012? - Brandon and I hit 8 years together. We spent our anniversary going to different places: the Science Center, the anti-psychiatry "museum" in Hollywood run by Scientologists, played vintage pinball in an old arcade, hiked Brand Park a little, had pheasant and duck with lobster mac 'n' cheese for dinner, walked up and down Hollywood Blvd for no reason. I guess you could say I fell for Peeta from "The Hunger Games," though, since I ended up reading all three of the books and loving his character a lot. What was your favorite TV show? - Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire, Breaking Bad, Avatar: The Legend of Korra, Downton Abbey, Mad Men, and we took up watching other shows like Sons of Anarchy and Doctor Who. What was your least favorite show of 2012? - Wasn't exactly happy with how the last season of House M.D. went. The last episode was rather... sad. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year? - Nope. All the people I hate, I've already heartily disliked. What was the best book you read? - Finished all 10 volumes of Y: The Last Man and all three of the Hunger Games books, but I wouldn't exactly call them great reading. What was your greatest musical discovery? - Lots of good stuff on Spotify, but nothing really sticks out in my head right away. What did you want and get? - Got to see Val Kilmer play Mark Twain. I was dying to see that the moment I heard about it. What did you want and not get? - A pegasus. What was your favorite film of this year? - Didn't really go to the movies much this year. I only went to see The Hunger Games, The Expendables 2, and Brave. That's pretty much the order I liked them in. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you? - I turned 27. Woke up and went down to Stan's Donuts in Westwood and got the peanut butter and banana donuts and drank a bottle of Flying Cauldron Butterscotch Beer while hanging around Marilyn Monroe's grave (also found Bettie Page, Dean Martin, Don Knotts and a bunch of others. Then went to the L.A. Arboretum and the Pacific Asia Museum during a Chinese New Year festival. After that we went to a steampunk store called Curio Emporium, then had lunch at this Greek place, Papa Cristo's. Following that we went to the Velaslavasay Panorama and I played with a polydactyl kitty in the garden out back. For dinner with my parents, I had deer with mashed potatoes and noodles at Jagerhaus. Then Brandon's band performed at a bar in Long Beach.Other birthday activities included picking up all kinds of jerky from Cowboy Dan the day before and getting lunch with Christina and Jayne the day after. What is one thing that would have made your year more satisfying? - More travel, I guess. Oh, and if Brandon had gotten a picture of Kirk Hammet holding the picture I made. How would you describe your personal fashion concept of 2012? - I didn't have any particular concept. Dressing in layers helped, though. What kept you sane? - I'll stick with what was posted in answer to this last year: "Leaving the house." What celebrity/Public figure did you fancy the most? - Same as usual: 30-year-old Clint Eastwood and James Hetfield in the "Whiskey in the Jar" video. What political issue stirred you the most? - The presidential election was pretty intense this year, and I'm happy with the results. What news story was the most overblown? - Overblown? There were A LOT of issues this past year, but I'm going to go with CIA Director David Petraeus' resignation over having an affair. Really, guys? Let it go. That and when Facebook went public. Anyway, it was actually a big news year and the fluff was more just things that weren't about the election, the Olympics, or a mass shooting. Who do you miss? - Lots of people. Pretty much anyone who's not in SoCal any more. Did you reconnect with anyone? - A lot of the people I did background work with last year. Tell us a life lesson you learned in 2012. - Not sure, actually. Maybe that I can do a lot of things when I put my mind to it. I took up a couple of artistic hobbies and realized I can do a few of them pretty well. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year. - "Oh all the money that e'er I spent I spent it in good company And all the harm that e'er I've done Alas, it was to none but me And all I've done for want of wit To memory now I can't recall So fill to me the parting glass Good night and joy be with you all" What plans do you have for 2013? - Well, I'm working the Doctor Who convention next month, but otherwise no plans. What are your resolutions for 2013? - Same as before. Do/learn/try something new every day. Let it ride. What will you be doing for New Year's Eve? - Already happened. Drove home from Ridgecrest and went to Glen and Kina's party. Hung out and drank moonshine. (Last edited by Rogue on 01-11-13 07:49 PM) |

I know Time has done the cop out and just made multiple covers for this year, and it the past they've awarded it to things like "the computer" and "YOU."
But that whole choice issue reminded me of how Channing Tatum got People's Sexiest Man of the Year title (yeah, I know... who the fuck cares?) and all these women were protesting that it should have gone to Ryan Gosling. The argument went that Ryan was offered the title, but it can only go to a person if they choose to accept it, which Ryan continues to reject. |

Well, happy belated birthday to me.
Got to see a Gutenberg Bible, one of Louis Pasteur's journals, first editions of works by Galileo, Newton, Descartes, Darwin, Mendel, etc. Looked through stereopticons at grisly vintage 3D photos of dead Union and Confederate soldiers. Walked around the Huntington Library's expansive, gorgeous grounds. Afterward went to the oldest tiki bar in L.A. and the regulars kept buying me strong drinks while I geeked with bartender about tiki everything. Also, I had a great time working an anime convention the weekend before last (Brandon and I found three lost children and were given the coveted "Big Damn Hero" ribbon), and I get to work ops at the biggest Doctor Who convention in a month. |

Heh, "vague Hawaiian theme" covers a lot of them. Your standard tiki bar has bamboo fixtures, Polynesian decorations, and tropical rum-based beverages in whimsical tiki mugs and hollowed out coconuts and pineapples.
Pretty much your romanticized, campy/kitschy Polynesian fantasy bar that really took off in the late 1940s and carrying into the 1960s after the U.S. got all into the exotic South Pacific lifestyle following World War II, with further excitement coming from interest in the Kon-Tiki voyage. The whole fad is why we have things like the Enchanted Tiki Room at Disneyland, Trader Vic's, and so on. I just always thought the Tiki craze was cool, and hence why one of my cats is named "Tiki." |

So I haven't really been posting, but I at least swing by several times a day.
My legs hurt. Stitch, Brandon, and I did a ridiculous hike to a former Nazi compound in the Santa Monica Mountains that involved climbing up and down over 1,100 stair steps. What's everyone else up to these days? |

Now I just see him as the Doctor in Black Adder. He keeps dying and returning the next series as another character by the same name. | |||

Reading A Confederacy of Dunces, which I keep feeling irritated with despite several friends and decades of biblio-critics insisting it's a great read.
It's just that the protagonist is a fat 30-year-old asshole who lives with his arthritic mother and treats her like shit, going on about being a genius since he has his MA in Medieval literature while he sits around eating and watching TV all day. It's prophetic of my generation, I suppose. |

More posted. I probably should refrain from looking at these because I'm starting to see spoilerish things.
Also, it's kind of funny seeing Ciarán Hinds as Mance Rayder since he also played Caesar in Rome and a bunch of Jane Austen characters. |
