| I get what you're saying, and it makes sense, but I also understand why people have been labelling music the way they have.
With the development of new styles and diversified standards, fans can pick and choose what they want and like; however, to describe what one likes it's simpler to mention a specific genre (maybe list a few bands that fit it). Saying something is rock is rather broad. Not all people who like rock like all of the sub-genres within it. I happen to like Celtic rock; it sounds nothing like "regular rock". People who like "industrial" won't necessarily like "punk" and vice-versa. By naming a style (though I don't care for labels, in general), it simplifies finding more bands in a genre you like. It's just there's so much variety that it's hard to just pin one music type over another. Sure in the store you put them all under one big label, but you can call the sub-genre anything you want. That's like calling all of the shades of blue (sky, navy, aqua-marine, etc) just blue, and they CANNOT be anything else. At the same time, I don't care for labels in the sense that now a band is pinned to do only one kind of music and if they do anything else it alienates their following and they get called sell-outs. I just got a giant, iced fortune cookie in the mail from my friend in San Diego; otherwise, so far I've gotten a book, the promise of a new camera, and a ticket to a convention.
