I've always been much more partial to whales and dolphins, but I think sharks are fascinating creatures, all the same. We've been hearing about an influx of great whites off our coast, especially near the piers (Seal Beach a lot, and Huntington Beach has supposedly been closed most recently), but I haven't seen them myself.
Anyway, they're usually the coolest exhibit in any aquarium. EDIT: I typed up this answer and then went and did other things before coming back to finish the post. To answer Xeo's question, I'm "meh" regarding the '80s, I guess? I was born in that decade, sure, but I'm much more of a '90s kid. And even then, I sometimes feel like I'm a '70s kid what with how much of the shows I watched came out of that time and how so much of our shit was from the '70s that was never redone in the '80s. Well, '80s pop rock is cool. You hear someone call another person an "asshat." What mental image does that conjure in your mind? (Last edited by Rogue on 07-12-15 02:06 AM) |

Doesn't matter so long as it's a smooth ride. I think my favorite was Montu in Busch Gardens in Tampa Bay, but I haven't ridden it since 1999. Six Flags Magic Mountain's X was amazing when it first opened. You're staring at the ground as you're falling toward it.

Not while I was driving. But yeah I've been a passenger during a few blow-outs, I'm usually the one who changes it.

Thanks, Mom, for covering the cost of high tea and admission to the Huntington. Quite a great day.
Thank you, Irma, for being the greatest co-worker and practically a surrogate mom to me. |

Frankly, I tend to inadvertently starve myself when I'm sick (mostly when I'm flu-ish and the couple weeks thereafter). If I feel like I might throw it up again after eating, I don't want it. When I have colds, I also often just go to bed without dinner, though I had my usual high fiber cereal for breakfast and salad or whatever for lunch.
If I'm up to it, though, I'll sometimes make soup with chicken broth, brown rice, and Trader Joe's soy chorizo as the base, and throw in whatever vegetables we've got laying around the house and refrigerator. Which reminds me, I gotta pick up some cayenne pepper some time before the next time I make gumbo. If it was guaranteed that everyone from your graduating class was going to be there, would you attend your high school reunion? (I was never contacted for mine) |

I may be on my way to catching one too, which was inevitable since I've been sick just about every month this year and I was out walking in the rain off and on throughout the day.
Fact: I had my hair thinned for the first time today. |

I'm so bored right now that not only am I answering the old questions, I'm throwing in a bunch of additional questions and answers. God, where did I find this thing all those years ago?
Feel free to add questions as you go. I mean, why not, right? I've been adding some here and there over the years. What was the last... ...thing you ate? - Tonkotsu ramen with a couple injected eggs at Benten. ...person you talked to on the phone? - Brandon, calling to ask if he can pick me up from the Korean market after I got a haircut. ...person you e-mailed/private messaged? - Crystal, regarding Comic-Con stuff. ...person you hugged? - Ali. ...person you kissed? - Brandon. ...time you laughed? - Listening to NPR with Bran. ...time you cried? - I shed some tears watching "Trainwreck" yesterday, for some reason. ...movie you watched? - "Trainwreck" yesterday. Been going to the movies a lot these days it seems. Saw "Terminator Genisys," "Jurassic World," and "Mad Max: Fury Road" in their opening weekends. ...TV show you watched? - "True Detective." ...DVD you watched? - "Never Been Kissed." It was part of a set of DVDs I picked up at a thrift store with the intent to donate to my activities center and I just wanted to make sure it was appropriate. Fuck it, just put in "Silver Linings Playbook," because it's a much better answer than a piece of shit '90s teen flick. ...video tape you watched? - "Pulp Fiction." Got it for 50 cents at the same thrift store. ...song you listened to? - Ingrid Michaelson -- "Time Machine" View on YouTube ...book you finished? - "My Friend the Mercenary: A Memoir" by James Brabazon, but more recently I finished the graphic novel "Last Day in Vietnam" by Will Eisner. ...heart-to-heart you had with someone? - Brandon, most likely. ...person you met? - Norma, the new DSP at work. ...person who died in your life? - Well... my grandmother passed in March, and a couple weeks ago we found out the other new DSP killed himself by jumping off the Breakers Building in Long Beach. I only met him a couple times. ...new food you tried? - The tonkotsu ramen I mentioned earlier. Hours before that, coffee and an Arnold Palmer from a place in Little Ethiopia. ...new thing you tried (event, action)? - I apparently listed five things last time, so ah, fuck it, here's the last five again: 1. Had tea at the Huntington's rose garden tea room. 2. Dinner at the Blind Rabbit, another of those faux-speakeasies. This one you need a reservation so you can be told where the secret entrance is. 3. Saw pictures of Pluto. 4. Watched a WWII battle re-enactment (Russians versus Japanese), along with seeing re-enactors for everything from Vietnam to Romans, Celts, Picts, Vikings, and so on in one place. 5. Walked around the Venice Beach boardwalk in the rain. ...time you went around the house in just your underwear? - I've lost track on this one, honestly. Yesterday? ...time you weren't fully sober? - It's been a while since the last time I even felt a buzz. The last time I neared drunk was when we were drinking Kraken at the renaissance faire and I was dehydrated and thought everything was awesome. Hm, wait I think I remember feeling something during one of our beer tastings near my work a few weeks ago. This is sad... ...you "geeked" out? - Difficult to say, really, since it feels like a typical moment for me is "geeking out" to most other people. I guess the last time my mind was blown on my geekdom was running around MacArthur Park and seeing all of the military re-enactors. ...thing you read in the bathroom? - Something off my phone, most likely. ...bargain you made? - Bought six little hand sanitizers from Bath and Body Works for $5. I was oddly excited, especially since they're so necessary for work. ...thing you planned? - Was going to try to see a free production of "The Misanthrope," but when we showed up there was no one at the park. Would have helped if they had e-mailed me before we drove all the way to West Hollywood. ...award you won? - Got a tiny raise several months back? ...piece of toast you had? - Toasted some of the bread they brought us at Foxy's using the toaster they had at our table there. ...present you gave? - Contributed some cash to my boss' birthday present and cake fund. ...porno you saw? - I picked up this corny DVD from the thrift store which ended up being some terrible softcore porn called "Cabin Fever." ...song you sang in the shower? - Don't recall. I sometimes inadvertently sing "Uptown Funk" to the clients. ...song you had stuck in your head? - "Little Lion Man" -- Mumford and Sons GAME OF THRONES SPOILERS, DO NOT WATCH THIS IF YOU HAVEN'T WATCHED THE SHOW AND INTEND TO SOMEDAY. View on YouTube By the way, it annoys me to no end that they "plugged in" and dropped the banjo. Now they sound like everyone else. ...thing you marked on your calendar? - Brandon's and my paydays, on our dry erase calendar board. ...errand you ran? - Picked up fruit at the farmers market from our usual grower yesterday and then bought a couple cases of water at Trader Joe's. ...drink you had? - Rose tea I brewed from the batch of loose leaf tea I picked up at the Huntington last weekend. ...cool thing you found? - Hm, I really don't remember the last. I guess the first thing that comes to mind is my Adventureland mug that I got at Downtown Disney. It's my absolute favorite mug. ...time you brushed your hair? - Some time today, before and after the haircut. ...person you talked to over AIM, YIM, etc? - Crystal, still, since Facebook messages pop up like an IM. ...thing you bought? - Besides dinner and coffee, bought custard cakes called "Happy Promise" from the Korean market. ...game you played? - Online sudoku. ...new place you visited? - Apparently I listed five last time, so once again, fuck it: 1. Benten Ramen 2. Paradocs 3. The Blind Rabbit 4. The Farrell's Ice Cream Parlour in Brea 5. Children's Pool in La Jolla ...thing you celebrated? - Brandon's and my 11th anniversary. We went out to Palm Springs and rode the tram up the mountain and hiked a bit. After we came back down we grabbed a bite and hung around the tiki bar where the manager showed Bran and me the secret room and we geeked together. ...dream you had? - Not sure, but it was probably about work. I've had more than a few stress dreams about eloping clients and other such nightmare problems. ...thing you dressed up for? - Faire season. ...website you visited outside of the board? - Yelp and Facebook. ...thing you really wanted, but couldn't get? - I'm so depressed I couldn't pre-order the "Fallout 4" collector's edition with Pip-Boy. ...movie you watched that you thought was underrated? - "Gladiatress." Freaking hilarious. ...stage (concert, play, etc) show you saw? - Saw a free summer production of "Romeo and Juliet." ...time you visited family? - Drove out to Ridgecrest to see Brandon's sister and mother as they were visiting his dad and brother. ...exercise you did? - It's been a while since I actually took a walk around the neighborhood, but I think the last real exercise I did was hiking in Griffith Park. We made it up Mt Hollywood and also went to the infamous tea house. ...vacation you took? - Went to Arizona for the renaissance faire and stayed with Brandon's grandmother. ...text message you sent? - To Brandon, asking when he was off work. ...picture you set as your phone's wallpaper? - I have an NCR ranger as mine. God, fuck that L.A. can't seem to function in the rain. People drive like shit, but more than that -- practically EVERYTHING shuts down. We had plans for Saturday, and back-up plans on top of those, and they all fell through because people pretty much went, "Oh shit! Oh shit! There's water coming from the sky! We have to close down and RUUUUUUUUUNNNN!!!"
It sort of happened again on Sunday, but to a much lesser extent (it rained harder, actually, but I had no interest in the festival that was going on). I got caught in the rain three times this weekend, but oh well. |

Went in for a doctor's appointment this week to finally address my ongoing dizziness, having to take a half-day off work. She talked to me like I was crazy, kept turning to give Brandon these "You believe this shit?" looks while I'd be talking. | |||

I had blood work done following my urgent care visit for it. Blood sugar normal. Thyroid, kidneys, liver, and so on also normal. Just need to work on my cholesterol (which was also a little high the last time I had blood tests done 6 years ago). I also tend to drink at least 2 liters of water a day.
I've got an appointment for an audiologist next month, along with other doctor's appointments they want me to have. It was a bitch scheduling them all for the same day since they're OF FUCKING COURSE only open Monday-to-Friday 9-4 (my work is M-F 8:30 to 4 ). No fucking way I'm taking more than one day off work when I only have so much paid personal leave and I fucking need it to make up for the weeks I'll be gone in September. I'm such a hypochondriac, at that. I've been stressed out with all this doctor shit, but I've finally got insurance for the first time since college. |

I saw them cut so much hair off and then they ironed it and it looked and felt thinner and I was excited. Then it rained and my hair got all poofed out and it seriously looks and feels the same as before. Christ, it's still so thick.
Fact: I've been keeping a jar for putting in notes about all the good things that have happened this year that Brandon and I will read at the end of it. |

Re: the signature thing. It was open for interpretation and you pretty much nailed it.
Now regarding that voice, that's something I haven't really defeated on my own either, but I guess I end up listening to it... A LOT. The trick is to remember that life really can be pointless (we're just goddamn specks in this wide universe), but it's your life, your existence, and you have the responsibility to find a point to it all that works for you. When a friend was going through depression during her unemployment (she was in no danger of homelessness since her gas, food, and housing were covered), I told her to try volunteering and doing something that helped others who were less fortunate than herself. It was around Christmas time and so she started doing gift stuff for poor children and it made her feel like she had a purpose and less depressed. Even in feeling like I'm helping make lives worthwhile for people with developmental disabilities, I find myself periodically going through fucked up mental states that I have to fight my way out of and not stew about in public. My work is like Disneyland -- we have plastered on smiles all day. Man, I'm rambling... Where was I going with all this? Hm.. Well, I don't really have an answer to the question, but there are many more abstract ways of looking at it. It's sort of like pondering the meaning of life. If you don't really have a faith, like I do, it's easy to just think this was all a hilarious accident that life on earth exists altogether and that there really isn't a meaning, to begin with. I'm still wandering through this life feeling like I haven't found my purpose, but on the optimistic side it could been seen that I'm just all potential and that I could still do anything. I really don't think I answered anything here. Sorry... Have you ever had one of those, "It was really all about the journey all along, and not the destination," experiences? |

I had a day of doing absolutely nothing yesterday, for the first time in a while, and I actually felt exhausted at the end of it. The fuck?
Fuck not having enough time to read anything. Funny, right? I did NOTHING yesterday and I'm still complaining that I don't have time to read. I also never got around to taking a nap when I've been so sleep deprived. |

I might give "Ant Man" a shot in the cheap theater, especially since I've been waiting years for it.
I don't know why, but I just don't feel Marvel these days. Possibly because there's just too much now, they've gone too mainstream, and they've been stringing along the whole Thanos storyline for way too long while Fox is bing-bang-booming with Apocalypse after announcing him in 2013. And that's another thing. I can't stand that the comics are just retconning shit to match up the "official" back stories and such with their movies. Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are suddenly NOT mutants and NOT Magneto's kids? They're just people who were experimented on? Screw it. "X-Men: Days of Future" at least hinted that was right and pretty much just made it so X3 didn't happen. What's more the X movies don't even bother with gratuitous Stan Lee cameos any more. Win! Hate to take my ire out on Ant Man, but I'm already iffy considering how much they were screwing with Edgar Wright. Went and saw "Spy" last night in the cheap theater. It was pretty funny, didn't suck, passed the Bechdel test, and addressed many of the things I deal with every fucking day as a fat chick. Why do people always ask ME for directions when they don't give me a passing glance otherwise? (Last edited by Rogue on 08-01-15 03:02 PM) |

I ran out and got them last night after watching "Spy."
This has probably been the best selection of flavors yet. I wasn't digging 2013's, and 2014's were.. gross. And I'm not even talking about cappucino (which wasn't bad). The mango salsa one just tasted like chemicals. All right, since I'm eating them all right now I'll go over my thoughts: NY Reuben: Astonishingly tastes like eating a reuben sandwich. I can taste the sauerkraut; I can taste the brine of the meat. The initial smell is sort of a trip. I like 'em, but not my favorite. West Coast Truffle Fries: The mildest of the bunch. I do get the sour cream and onion, though I'm not really tasting vinegar. Since I had truffle fries last weekend, it does actually taste like them. But then again, both are fried potatoes, so this isn't quite a stretch. Greektown Gyro: It took several chips to finally get most of the spice palate, but yeah, I finally could taste the tzatziki and gyro seasonings. It smells the least like the food it's impersonating, and first taste doesn't scream, "GYRO!!!" Still good. Southern Biscuits and Gravy: The one I was most hesitant of, especially since sausage gravy is one of my favorite things. Opened the bag and duuuuuuuuuuuuuude, it's freaking sausage gravy. My favorite breakfast food is sausage gravy atop crisp homefries, and holy shit, if this doesn't taste just like that? I can taste the savory meat and the black pepper; it's just goddamn good. Going back and forth between them, my tongue sort of goes blind from one chip to another with gyro, Reuben, and truffle fries, but biscuits and gravy continues to declare what it distinctively is. I guess they're my favorite too. (Last edited by Rogue on 07-29-15 09:23 PM) |
