Originally posted by Makura The Athenian navy were indeed the ones who saved the day there. This is true. However the out-numbered Spartans really were holding back the Persians on land in much the way they were in the movie. Incidentally Athens and Sparta, known rivals, banded together against Persia for this. They were constantly at war with each other, hence why Leonidas refers to them in disgust as "boy lovers" in the movie. While the mere 300 men were really only legend, there were a couple thousand Spartans. They fought to the finish in the three day fight, allowing the rest of Greece to retreat, build up their forces and attack. And the battle of Marathon was the battle before Thermopylae. Legend has it, the runner sprinted the full 26 miles (the length of our now traditional marathon today) from Marathon to Athens and died of exhaustion after delivering the message. The intent of the fighting with Persia was also a little off in the movie. Really the source of it all was the Ionian Revolt in Persia and the Greeks burning Sardis, the temple of the goddess Kybele. In retaliation, and generations later, the Persians descended upon Greece, eventually leading up to the legendary battle portrayed in the movie. Truly Themistocles, the commander of the Athenian navy, is the biggest unsung hero here, but then again the people who set out to create 300 weren't out to make a historically sound film, but one badass action-packed visual feast. It's sort of like with Troy, how that one was fudged in every sense of the word. The war lasted 10 years, but in that movie it last seemingly a week. Meh. A friend pointed out that just before Leonidas set out with his men, he was carrying a shield, but then a second later the shield disappeared and his wife and son were holding it. |

they had shirts damn it! shirts and copper breastplates! and katanas hadnt freaking been invented yet and elephants and what the hell was up with the bladed arm bone dude!?*twiches as Elara tazers him*...sorry bout that...dont know what could have come over me
I gotta say i LOVED this film, despite its vigorous sideways rape of my favorite battle ever (the weapons and armor anyway). It was pretty and awsome even if the rhino scene was dumb. if you want to read an amazing book, read "gates of fire" by steven pressfield. reading it was what interested me in the 300 to begin with. I think I'm the only person in the world that is not going to see this movie. I honestly cannot say that I would find an action, violence, sex, and other things us crazy people today find attractive-packed retelling of history interesting. Any type of retelling of history or war movie always bores me to death. I could probably get all of the information that they cover in this movie in actual direct statements from reading a textbook for 20 minutes instead of watching beautiful glistening bodies, significant gore, and developing an emotional attachment. o wellz. | |||

Originally posted by venomouslobster Well the point of the movie is that it was based on the graphic novel which had fictitious scenes to make it more interesting. I liked the creativity, but I agree it would be cool to see a true re-making of the battle that did justice to fact. |

Originally posted by Rogue300ish Spartans and 1000 Volunteers, according to our friend Wiki. I have yet to see this movie, I'm probably going to see it eventually, it looks pretty wicked. There's already another internet image fad involving "THIS IS SPARTA", with the guy screaming... |

Originally posted by The Pretension A month ago I was joking with my friend, kittybob, about making a LiveJournal icon using screen caps of each other the Spartans' chest and then flashing some statement about there being nothing in the world like Spartan abs. Now it's like Heroes, icons and images EVERYWHERE. What kills me are when people misquote the damn thing. Take Chris' layout with the web comic. It's "Only Spartan women give birth to real men," damn it! |

Well, it's the best movie I've ever seen, ever, period. I mean, I was biased to Star Wars for a damn long time, but this.... This was amazing. I need to see it at least two more times in theaters, since I'm sure I didn't catch everything.
Overall, I'll say that the cinematography was the best part, followed immediately by the action. I mean, when the captain's son was killed, he cut that Persian soldier about 5 times in the face. I love it. 10.5/10. |

Originally posted by Mr. Club The fighting was pretty damn acurate actually i was happy with it thou one part made me cringe right after the first charge the persians sent in a caveler unit so the spartans for some reason break ranks and start throwing there spears not a bad tactic but that wasnt my problem. one of the spears hit the caveler and he flew back like he should but he flew to the side and i mean flew i mean christ that was a hell of a throw not possable by human hands. but for once i was happy the swordsmanship and the shielding was right on over all i loved the movie. the sex scene was really bad horrable and didnt really belong. they also ended this movie very well but when the spartan king let out his last mighty roar and it was silent patrick couldnt resist he made the ocelot sound meow and it was fucking halarious. |

Dude, that movie made me feel like a man.
If there had been a helicopter waiting outside the movie theater offering to take anyone straight to Iraq, I would've hopped in and gone crazy on people because I felt so pumped. Jesus, amazing ass movie. |
