Well, Im sure some of you know children's programming shows like Arthur, Spongebob Squarepants, Tellietubbies, and maybe Barney.

Well, after doing some research about the shows, there was alot of controversy about the characters being Homosexual. There was even an aired episode of "Baxter's Postcards" (Arthur sub-show or something) in which Baxter was introduced to a family that had two mothers.

Source
(there is also a link I believe that leads into further detail)

Alot of people were pissed about this, so it was only aired in like 5 states I believe, the rest were banned from the public from watching.

For starters, not once in that clip did I see any mark of supporting homosexuality. So why are people flipping the fuck out about this shit?

Also, my family and I were agreeing that Tellietubbies was not a show that supported it, It was a children's show for crying out loud. And Spongebob Squarepants? I dont see anything Gay about the character because he is just that: A fucking character.

So how do you guys feel about this. Do you think the children shows today support homosexuality? Or do you think people are overreacting about this crap.

The world is fucking retarded.
Intolerant, close-minded, asinine fucking numb-cunts. I hate people who bitch about shit like this.
Kids are going to find out what "Gay" is anyway. Remember second grade?

"You're gay!"
"What's that?"
"I dunno, but you're it!"

Yeah. I rest my case.

I have to say I second Thor.

Seriously... Bugs Bunny cross-dressed and kissed Elmer Fudd. Does anyone say shit about it? Did they ever? NO!

They are cartoons! They are wacky and flamboyant, and that is just fine! And like Thor said, they will find out about it anyway so why not in a cartoon?

Bugs Bunny was in the 50s or 60s, Elara. A lot of pople didn't even know what being gay was back then.

Now, kids are going to find out what gay is, and from your point of view(as people who approve of gay rights), finidng out is okay because being gay must be a perfectly natural thing.

Now look at it from the point of view of a hard core conservative. They believe gays to be immoral and unnatural abominations of the earth. They don't want their children to know about the evils of the world, and what terrible things go on in it, until they can fully understand it, and are less innocent.

Now, this conservative family happens to watch Baxter, thinking that it wouln't show anything that they didn't want their innocent children to see.

You see what happens?

This conservative family isn't nearly as rare as you might think, and I'm of the opinion that we should respect all of those families that want to keep it hidden from their innocent children until they can explain it properly. Being gay is still a controversy, and until the moment when it's not, I don't think it should be shown on childrens television.

Actually Vulkar, reguarding about the 60's gay comment, Homosexuality has been around even before 1 AD. So im pretty sure that your average American knew about Homosexuality before the 1900's.

But even so, about your average conservative family, sure it will be known eventually to the children that Homosexuality exists in this world. But not everything is Candy land and sugarpuffs. Unfortunately, just like everyone else says, it will be brought to their attention eventually.

I can fully understand it not being allowed like on Barny and Friends, Seaseme Street (though they did do a lession about Fear -- 9/11 deal. Not to mention in South America, there was a character puppet who was black, and had STD's), and other shows. But shows like Arthur, which was a great show about how different people were.

Remember Puzzle Friends on PBS? It was a show that aired in the mid 90's about kids with different families. There was a Black Kid, a Chinese Kid, White Kid, Jewish, I think one of them was Handicapped, and so on. They did an episode about prejudice, in which the Black kid was invited by a white kid's mom, and soon found out that he was not allowed to be at the party because his family was prejudice to black people.

So PBS is allowed to air that, however they cant explain to the kids at the age group of 9-12 that Gays Exist in the world?

Edit- Let me revamp that Sentence. I dont mean an entire lesson about Gays walk around and doing what they do. I ment that they can at least show families that have the same mother or father, you know what I mean? To me that would not hurt anything. I remember when I was younger and I was living with my aunt on my mom's side, alot of the kids picked on me because I have a black Aunt. And I have a Gay Uncle, in which he came to my Elementary school one day and did acted feminine. None of the teachers at Park Elementary minded it, and he did a lession to my 1st grade class about...Well I forgot, but he did say he had a Partner and so forth.

I dont see a problem with it. I guarantee you that the kids will handle it better if their parents were with them and were to explain it to them better after the show.

Also, I remember watching this like 5 years ago. Sure the average mind would think this was seriously peverted. But this was allowed on the air. Alot of families on the West thought this was extremely peverted.

Sadly, I have to agree.

Actually, a lot of people back then didn't. My mom had no idea what gay people were until she was older, along with a lot of other people.

Yeah, it will be brought up, eventually, when the adults, the parents, the people with the responsibility to actually tell the children about this, choose to say something.

I'll say more later, when I've got a bit more time.

Just remember Vulkar, most of those conservatives grew up as fans of Bugs Bunny.

But yes, people did know back then. Not all, but a good amount did.

For once I agree with you. I mean one could say that violence and sex is okay for kids to see because they'll find out about it eventually. But that's something you want your kids to know about when you want them to.

Not only that, but it was nowhere nearly as widely talked about back then.

And Spongebob Squarepants? I dont see anything Gay about the character because he is just that: A fucking character.

That makes no sense. He can't be gay because he's a character? Character's can't be gay?

Actually, it makes perfect sense. If that character was not a character, what do you think kids would do if he was actually Gay? Hmmmm? Think about that for a second.

People need to get over it. People are treating gay rights now like they treated black rights 50 years ago. People in the future are going to look back at this and laugh.

Children need to be exposed to all kinds of people. Races, gender, sexuality. If children grow to learn to accept everyone, then prejudice will greatly be reduced in the future.

I could not agree more, Shuyin! Now if only the rest of the world would see it that way.

Actually, I wonder what kids would do if a talking sponge wasn't a character in a cartoon more than I wonder what they would do if he was gay and not a cartoon character. Besides, how can a sponge be gay? There are no other sponges in that show. Spongebob just isn't a dick to everyone so he's labeled as gay.

Yeah, after reading my posts yet again, I can see what you mean. Very sorry about that.

You know how kids sometimes act like the characters they see on Television? Well it is up to the parents to display that the characters are not real in the actual show. But my point is, I dont see how a kid can act or learn something if they see and portrait a 'Gay' character in a cartoon.

Need me to clarify more? Once again, sorry if my posts did not make any sense.

Never saw that episode. But still, parents don't count for what I meant... unless we start going into discussions of incest... and I would much rather not do that.

I do find it really stupid that parents feel the need to refrain from telling their children about things to do with things like sex and sexual preference. My family NEVER told me ANYTHING about sex. I actually learnt that in year 6 at school when they did sex education. And everything I know about gay people I basically found out myself from listening to what people say.

I've known what a gay person is since I was about eight or nine, thanks to television (As in the programmes for teens and above. My parents were pretty relaxed with the shows I watched or the games I played). I don't see anything wrong with me knowing at what some people would consider an early age.

I stand by the fact that while they may learn about it eventually, when should be the parent's decision. Just like the parent decides when their child should learn about sex, drugs, death, etc.

completely agree.

There are a lot of things in life that happen even if we may not like them. Violence is something that happens on a daily basis but I plan on doing all I can to shelter my kids from it as long as possible.
