After seeing a movie poster in the theater I got really interested. I looked it up and watched some previews. Basically something attacks New Your and nobody knows what it is. According to some source that I forget the monster is one of the most closely guarded secrets in Hollywood right now. I just hope nobody sees the movie before me and then tells me what it is.

Cloverfield seems like such a strange title for a movie that looks like it's gonna be violent. Otherwise though it's piqued my interest and I'll probably either see it in theaters or rent it.

I REALLY wanna see this movie too.
In all honesty, I think it's an extra-terrestrial attack of some sort. **shrugs** Dunno why, but that was the first thing I thought of, and now I can't shake the idea. So...only seeing this movie will prove me right or wrong. In all honesty, there are a lot of things that excite me about this film. Such as the fact that the threat is a "guarded Hollywood sectet" as Nucklearknight stated. Hollywood hasn't been truly glamorous, or exciting in a LONG time, I think...so...**shrugs** I dunno. Even if the movie ends up sucking...it has something that's got me wondering, so I don't care. |

The only way I can see it not being a new Godzilla movie is because in one of the previews they show the shadow's of the monster's through a tent.
so I dont know, it's either going to be a extremely bad ass movie or a total flop. We'll just have to see a weeks to see. |

If it was Godzilla, they'd be throwing that name out as much as possible, to profit of the name. It's most definitely something new. Also, I somehow knew it was J.J. Abrams when the original trailer came out months ago, the name just popped into my head.
What interests me the most is that the movie seems to be entirely from the POV of a camera, which could be interesting. EDIT: or it could just be something for the trailers. (Last edited by FX on 01-07-08 10:01 PM) |

My friend thinks that it's dragons...
What does the name "Cloverfield" mean? Significance? |

"Cloverfield" Hmmm...
**shrugs** I'm sure it IS important, but not sure... Clover...green...plants...bacteria... Field...lots of green....plants...bacteria... Cuz from the preview, people get sick or something, don't they? (I didn't watch the preview posted here, so I dunno if it's different or not, and my computer was being WAY too slow, so I didn't feel like waiting it out...) I don't know. It's a corny analysis, and it's something I did just off the top of my head now...but...I really don't know what the name could mean. And I'm still sticking by the fact that I think the threat is aliens. Teehee. Why? Because...well, movies go through cycles...a certain genre will come out, or it will be the genre most used for a certain timespan. Science fiction hasn't been used much lately...not as much as the others at least...so maybe it's finally sci-fi's turn. That and January/February is usually when Hollywood releases the films that they don't think will make as much as the others planned out for the year. Why? Because a good chunk of the country is still broke from Christmas...Like, enough of a chunk to cause the box offices to drop a bit. Ya know? The idea of an extra-terrestrial film...I know I like sci-fi...I know a lot of people who do...but I don't think a movie about aliens would make as much as the other movies do...right now at least. Ehh...nuff sleepy, senseless ranting. |

If I remember right, J.J. Abrams said he got the idea for it when he was in Japan and he and his son would go to various toy stores, checking out the Godzilla and other movie monster figures. He then decided that America needed it's own monster, so the Cloverfield thing is supposed to be his own creation.
When the trailer first appeared at the Transformers movie, rumors were going around that it was the Voltron movie. But why would Voltron rip the head off the Statue of Liberty? With J.J. Abrams, I really don't know. He could pull an M. Night Shyamalan on us and it's nothing special at all. Remember the man brought us Lost, Alias, and Felicity. |

Alright guys, I went and saw the movie earlier today. I had my doubts about whether or not it would be good, becuase usually when movies are hyped up and somewhat mysterious they tend to suck in the end after all. Not the case with Cloverfield. Cloverfield was a very good movie. The first 20 minutes or so were slow, but afterward it was literally scary, non-stop "what's gonna happen next?" The entire movie is shot as if everything was recorded on a standard video camera. If you've seen the Blair Witch Project, and I haven't, it's pretty much like that. As my friend properly said it, the movie is supposed to give that, "Oh my god, that could actually happen!" feeling . It certainly does- it's very life-like. Had the movie been done normally I feel it wouldn't have radiated that realism and been very good at all. But shooting it the way they did made it great.
As I mentioned before it is a bit scary at times. I'll even admit I was slightly nervous during some of the scenes. There were times when I thought something was going to happen, it didn't. And there were times when I thought nothing was going to happen, and something did. I really think you guys will like this movie, so I suggest you do go see it. You won't be disappointed. On a side note, there are a couple things you guys might want to confirm that we learned about AFTER my friend and I saw Cloverfield: First, my friend got this off a board he goes to, but apparently if you sit all the way through the credits at the end you'll hear some noise and then a whisper. However, I don't know why, but for whatever reason it's backwards. My friend had me listen to the "reversed" playback the guy had posted on that site, so I do know what the whisper is saying. I won't post it here to avoid any spoilers, but after you go watch the movie and then maybe confirm if there is indeed noise at the end or not let me know and I'll send you a PM of what it is. Second: Spoiler:
During the very last scene when the guy and the girl are in the ferris wheel, (maybe it's something else) keep looking to right whenever it shows the ocean. People claim they caught a glimpse of something falling into the ocean and making a splash. I was looking at it the whole time when that scene came up, expecting to see something like a sudden big bump in the water but my eyes were focused on the center and not the right side, or the left for that matter. Let me know if either of these rumors are true. |

Damn, I saw it tonight and didn't know about these rumors. That's fucking awesome though.
This movie was great tonight. And Cyro, can you link me the audio clip in a PM? I love the movie, the style worked so well, the monster was brilliant really. The ending was adorable. And I really have little else to say about that junk. I want to see it again now. |

Definitely interested in that audio clip too, PM!
I saw it last night and it was probably one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. Everything about it was incredible. I can't believe how intense it was either. Spoiler: It was definitely sad to see everyone die but you have to admit, that was pretty original. It wasn't a typical ending with the two lovers escaping and living happily ever after and whatnot. Did Lily surive in the other helicopter? What the hell were the small monsters and what happens when they bite people? Where did the monster come from? Who found the tape? WHAT HAPPENED AFTER!? All these questions, truly made it amazing. I believe a DVD release will be amazing, watching a home video styled movie on a regular TV will probably be spooky. However, the DVD release could also completely ruin the movie in my opinion ... if they do some stuff with it. Like including behind the scenes, deleted scenes, monster sketches, etc ... the movie is perfect as it is and should be left alone. If they include stuff like that, it'll utterly ruin the mystery and novelty behind the film. And obviously, there should be no sequel. We need more movies like this, that leave things up to our own imagination and that don't show us absolutely everything. (Last edited by XeoLVII on 01-19-08 08:02 PM) |

All right, I'll be honest--
I thought it was terrible. Not because of the shaking camera. Not because the CG was obvious at parts. Not because the story was just your typical horror film where everyone gets picked off one by one. I just didn't like it. It struck me as yet another J.J. Abrams project that didn't tickle my fancy like Lost. And this is not a bias against J.J. because I'm absolutely excited about the Star Trek movie. Why would someone film most of what they did instead of run like hell? Spoiler: I would have seriously taken that handsome cab that they saw with the horse just walking around and gotten my ass out of there. HOW WAS BETH STILL ALIVE AFTER THEY PULLED HER OFF THE ROD?! She calls Rob right after the initial attack saying she's bleeding and all that jazz. Then when they find her with a rod through her fucking chest, they pull her off and somehow she's not bleeding to death like a living person probably would should that happen. Remember Steve Irwin? It could have pierced her heart, her aorta, etc. And here she is running through the city like it was just a scratch. Lastly, will people stop talking about that damn fish that was believed to be extinct that someone found off the coast of Madagascar? I'm so tired of that story being told over and over again. It just felt unfinished. Like Lost. That's it!! It's fucking Lost, but in the form of a monster movie. People aren't stuck on an island, it's a monster stuck in a city. And J.J. doesn't know where to go with it, so it fucking doesn't end! What you just saw was a fucking episode in the life of the monster. Show's over. Go home. |

I thought it was okay. Not great, but not too bad for a movie told from the viewpoint of someone who has no idea what is going on. There's not much of a story, and there are a few plot inconsistencies, but I can't really expect too much from a monster movie. It could have been worse. It could have fallen into the hands of Michael Bay, or the people who did The Day After Tomorrow, or the people responsible for the Tom Cruise travesty, War of the Worlds. Thankfully it wasn't that bad. (Last edited by Zoso on 01-20-08 04:33 AM) |

First off: Something is shown falling into the ocean in the last scene. I don't really think that's a spoiler, but someone can edit the tag in if they think so.
I was surprised with how good it was. Honestly, the first trailer pumped me up hardcore, but the 2nd trailer made me flaccid. I went into the theatre Friday thinking I was going to be dissapointed. The movie was good for what it was. I admit, the lack of backstory irritated me. But the movie kept me entertained. It played with my emotions and that's saying something. I'm pretty stoic when it comes to monster movies. Overall I liked it. Nowhere near perfection, but I'll definetly see the sequel. |

Originally posted by Shuyin And here is that footage: EDIT: According to several sources what fell from the sky, into the water, was a satellite (from the fictitious Tagruato company) that when authorities went to retrieve disturbed this monster that had been living in the ocean there for thousands of years. J.J. Abrams supposedly said that was indeed a 1000-or-so-year-old monster and this was it's first time on land. Fucking tourist. (Last edited by Rogue on 01-21-08 01:29 PM) |

This was all based on his idea, though. He came up with it while he was in Japan for MI:3.
While he didn't write/direct it, he had a huge hand in its creation. EDIT: Here. This is totally related. (Last edited by Rogue on 01-22-08 01:52 AM) |
