So I'm sure most of you already knew about the prequel that's coming out next year showing the original Enterprise crew at Starfleet Academy.

J.J. Abrams revealed at Comic-Con that Zachary Quinto would be playing Spock in the new feature film. Today a photo leaked of the make-up tests. It's a bit dark, but check it out:

It's actually a bit eerie how close he looks to classic Spock. More photos can be found here: http://www.jfxonline.com/jfxonline/2007/11/12/exclusive-quinto-as-young-spock/

Also, although it's old, but most people haven't seen it, here's Galacicast spoofing J.J. Abrams pitching a Star Trek prequel show to the media:

So I'm a bit confused and concerned. Chris Pine, who'll be playing James T. Kirk in the new Star Trek movie which is going to be a prequel to the original series, is claiming that he's using Han Solo as his inspiration for the part.

Source: http://www.trektoday.com/news/120308_02.shtml

Chris Pine has looked to another science fiction franchise for his inspiration for Captain Kirk.

As reported by IGN.com, Pine didn't look to William Shatner for inspiration in how to play Captain Kirk, but to Harrison Ford and his Star Wars character Han Solo.

"I would definitely say Harrison Ford," said Pine, when asked who he would like his portrayal of Kirk to resemble. "In either Indiana Jones or Star Wars. What Harrison Ford is so great at doing is bringing that quality to his characters that if they could be anywhere else in the world they would be there, but he is not, he just is in the middle of s--t and he has to figure out a way of dealing with it so that he can go back to doing whatever the hell he was doing before the film started."

Pine went on to say that he has "...always loved that quality about him in Star Wars, this sense of absolute grumpy manner; the accidental hero. Not to say that I modeled my version of James T. Kirk on anything in particular but I think I definitely have wanted to bring that kind of Harrison Ford humor to Kirk."

I'm really hoping this doesn't take a turn like other prequels where the director/producer claims he wants a fresh take on the story so he insists that the actors refrain from watching/reading anything to do with what they're making.

I get that James Kirk wasn't always what Captain Kirk was. He had to grow into being that, but, uh, drawing from Star Wars? I don't know. I could see it, but it just strikes me as odd.

I'm not one of those Star Trek vs. Star Wars folks. I love both, but you know... yeah.

I think he's just trying to say he wishes he was badass.

Anyway, I'm still excited to see this.

Yeah, it's nothing against Star Wars or what this movie will become it's just I would have thought Chris Pine might, you know, maybe watch the original series and draw from Shatner some.

Meh. I'm not watching it for Kirk anyway.

It's all about Spock in this one. Mm-hmm.

i actualy think this movie will turn out to be terrable.

drawing from star wars? what kind of lame stuff is that? if they want this movie to be good they should try to be as close to the original as possible or its really going to fail.

i doutb ill even need to see this in theatres. especially if chris pine isnt even gonna be like the first kirk, what a lame idea. he should just watch star trek and play kirk right.

and the new spok? he looks lame. not nearly cool enough to beat leonard nimoy.

Nephitaem, I think they're just trying to make a generally good movie on it's own merits instead of as nostalgia for the old Star Trek fans. I got into an arguement with my sister about this earlier, and I generally think that the style of the originals wouldn't be all that great for a modern film.

Especially sicne the originals had these long time periods where nothng happened. Seriously, how many minutes were spent on out first look at the Enterprise in the first movie?

I'm actually looking forward to this one, J.J. Abrams is a great director, and will more likely than not make this a great movie.

A film is being shot at my school over break. Word on the street is that its is several scenes from the new Star Trek. Don't quote me on that though.

What school do you go to?

But yeah, I am looking forward to this. It is really creepy how much he looks like Nimoy's Spock, though he is much too tan. What matters though is how good the acting is, and that is something we are going to have to wait to see.

Shuyin, sorry I didn't see this post until just now (was off in La-La-Land waiting for the board to come back and didn't realize that lo and behold! Here it was!).

You are indeed correct. They were filming scenes for Starfleet Academy at CSUN.

Some spy photos appeared on the web a few days ago. Here's the link on Trek Today: http://www.trektoday.com/news/180308_05.shtml

They use the CSUN library for a lot of things (Sky High, etc).

BUMP!

Some photos have been leaked onto a few different sites. Someone on LiveJournal rounded them up and posted them:

A lot of them are looking pretty damn good. Still a little wary of that Chris Pine.

Zack looks phenomenal.

Zack's totally going Sylar in the second pic. Also, Anton Yelchin looks awesome as Checkov. And Harold as Sulu...?

Yep, that's Harold back there. And Simon Pegg as Scotty right next to him.

To be honest I'm really impressed with Karl Urban as McCoy in the center. I actually forgot it was him and thought it was a good impersonation of DeForest Kelley. Uhura looks pretty damn good too.

Yeah, he is Sylar.

Seriously though, this keeps looking pretty awesome, although I'm not sure about Spock in that picture, he seems a bit...well, Sylar.

Aw, no new pictures of Simon Pegg's character?

Never been particularly interested in the Star Trek series, although I've heard some people say the films are better. This one interests me too, even if it's just because Simon Pegg's in it. xD

At this point it's just been considered "common knowledge," especially since a lot of us saw Cloverfield when it came out and that was one of the standard trailers that accompanied it.

I'm just waiting 'til they come out with a longer, more expansive trailer.
