So this is something I wrote on face book.

I was a witness to this event:

CSU Community,

A sad day has become even sadder. One of our students, Brian Lukas, has passed away.

The 19-year-old was trying to cross University Avenue near Clearview Circle about 9:30 a.m. this morning when he was hit by a vehicle. He was quickly taken to the Medical Center, but his injuries were too severe.

The CSU Counseling Center has scheduled two sessions tomorrow (Friday, Jan. 23) to give the campus community an opportunity to share and provide support. Both sessions will be at 1 p.m. - one in the Columbus room at the Davidson Student Center, and one in the new student lounge at 1011 Broadway.

Should anyone else need the services of the CSU Counseling Center, please call 706-568-2233.

Sincerely,

Gina Sheeks
Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management

My brother wrote this:

Dear Dr. Mescon,

Does the tragic death of Brian Lukas mean that CSU will finally put in an overpass for pedestrians at the University Ave entrance? How many students cross University Ave every day comeing from Courtyard II?

The distinct lack of consideration for pedestrians, of which many young college students are, shown by both the City of Columbus and CSU is atrocious. University Avenue is an extremely dangerous road to cross. I have experienced many close calls trying to cross at the stop light to get to Johnny's Hotdogs. Drivers often run that red light, especially if no cars are present and it has changed to allow a pedestrian to cross.

This crossing's danger is only exceeded by that of the crossings on the way to Peachtree Mall. Columbus State University claims to place the safety of its students first. When will it step forward to address these issues?

Even Lonnie Jackson Academy, on Buena Vista road is able to afford a pedestrian overpass for its students. I would think that if we can build a multi-million dollar parking garage, we can handle a pedestrian overpass.

Sincerely,

David Kolb

I want everyone to know that I will NOT stand for this happening again. I spent hours depressed about this and it is time to take a stand. It is time to show that as a university we will not stand for this. This is sickening. CSU is not concerned for our safety. This proves that they are only concerned for our numbers(ie our money) and NOT the quality we want on learning. First the parking garage that barely anyone ever uses and now the construction of a new building when what we need was this overpass to begin with. I just like David too had a couple of close calls, and my sister walks that route to school EVERY day almost. I will not stand for this and I will not be witness to such an event again.

That's why I'm tagging you. I felt that I alone was to blame for this event(for sitting there calling 911 when the lines were busy), but no... This is the school's fault for not building an overpass, this is the driver's fault for going 60 in a 35, and this is the city of Columbus's fault for not holding any concern for our students. We all need to take a stand and rally together. We need to show that we are more than just additional money in the school's pocket. We need to show that we are people and we have lives that we value. We all have loved one's in college.

If Buena Vista can do it. We can to!

Sarah E. Kolb

I want ALL clubs and organization presidents to contact me ASAP! Pass this note around PLEASE.

.... I am utterly pissed right now.

You mean you actaully expecct the politicians to care about their voters?

Travesty.

Seriously though, stuff likethis is why I hate almost all politicians or bussinessmen, no real concern for the people.

I've set up a plan to gather signatures of everyone who understands where I'm coming from and I'm sending a letter to the Senate, House, and Student Government.

I've sent letters to the House and Senate before and got a reply back in 2 weeks. Most of the time saying "we will consider that or.... Good idea..." =_=;;; ugh. It's worth a try. My grams sent letters to the House and Senate and got her tax form for her church.

Honestly, have the family of the dead student sue the school for negligence. If there were movements or requests for a pedestrian bridge before this accident happened and they were ignored it might be enough. Nothing gets a school to move faster than the threat of a multi-million dollar lawsuit.

Protest, do sit-ins, send the story with information to the news networks. Just get as much publicity as possible. Bad press will lower student enrollment, and that will hurt them in the pocketbook, where they will fee it most. I hope that you guys win.

You know, I imagine that after their family member just died, the stress to get extra money is the least of their concerns.

I'm not saying they shouldn't it would be great for the school if they did, but I'd be surprised if they did sue immediately.

It doesn't really have anything to do with the money, Vulkar. At least not to anyone but the school.

I will be honest, if a member of my family was killed that way I would be devastated, but I would also be royally pissed off. That the school could have done something to prevent their death, was asked repeatedly to do it, and did not would have me furious and I would stop at nothing to make them pay for it. No amount of money could bring that person back, but either way I would make sure that the pedestrian bridge was built by either forcing them to agree to it in a settlement or if I won the lawsuit I would fund the bridge myself and dedicate it to the person who had died.
