| An amputee girl, whose legs were removed from the knees down, had a special mermaid suit made for her by Weta, the good folks who do the concept art and special effects for such films as Lord of Rings, Chronicles of Narnia, and King Kong.
The tail they made for her came with a suit so she can swim. Check it out:

| Apparently Weta does this sort of thing all the time for people. Well, not mermaid tails for amputees, but prosthetics and make-up for people who have permanent damage to their faces and such.
