That is true... unless you know a fav scene is in the movie and you are waiting for it. One thing that I was happy with the Harry Potter films was that they left the Malfoy-turned-into-a-ferret scene alone and it was amazing.

But yeah, like I said... the changes they made to Gaiman's films were not that big of a deal, since they didn't drastically alter the storyline. I'm fine with that. I'm fine that in Goblet of Fire they had Neville give Harry the gillyweed instead of Dobby, that isn't a big deal... I'm pissed they cut out Rita Sketer being an unregistered Animagus and then left her out of Order of the Phoenix completely, since that was a major part of the plot in the books. Stuff like that is what pisses me off, since it leaves people that haven't read the books confused on certain points.

So far, it seems that Watchmen won't make mistakes like that and I am glad. I do think that I might wait to read it until after I see the movie though, since I would like to be surprised when I see it all... and besides, school won't let me read for pleasure anymore.

You know, looking back, I really loved watching the first Harry Potter movie when it was fresh in theaters. Since I'd read all the books up to that point, I still got a thrill out of watching the Quidditch match the first time, or seeing McGonagall transform.

Well, since Snyder did 300 really well, and so far most of the previews are fitting with the book, I think it's safe to say that this is gonna be pretty darn close.

I'm starting to wonder if the trailers are giving away too much. I suppose they assume anyone that's looking forward to seeing it was part of the boom in the

Found this character preview on YouTube:

I've read and re-read the book and I do not recall Veidt ever making a comment that eliminating dependence of fossil fuels would "make war obsolete." I just flipped through the book a couple times and still didn't find it. It's definitely not in his Nova Express interview near the end of the book either.

While that could very well be something Ozymandias would say, I think were Alan Moore to hear that he would be furious. Reason being that he felt when V for Vendetta was adapted that it had transformed into a story about American government when it was about Britain. Watchmen does take place in America and is an alternate reality of 1985 at that, but the comment reflects the current world and our current issues. Now while by '85 we had had the gas shortage of '79, we had not gone to war over oil yet (and wouldn't until the '90s). Gas prices were relatively low, in fact the price of oil was actually in the process of plummeting.

What's more "reliance on fossil fuels" is just one reason we go to war.

I'm not saying that a line like that ruins the movie, but it was a rather thoughtless comment to just toss in there nonchalantly.

If I'm not mistaken, in the Watchmen universe, a lot more things were electrically-charged. They've even got electric hydrants up and down the street that you can use to recharge your car if you've got the cables for it and everything.

EDIT: Correction: The U.S. did go to war with Japan in WWII after we put an embargo on oil to keep them from raging further distruction on Asia. With only a year's worth of oil left, they launched the attack on Pearl Harbor.

I, however, still feel Adrian would probably never have referenced this in 1985 as, again, war over oil was not happening until after Watchmen takes place.

Just got back from the midnight screening.

I thoroughly recommend NOT reading the graphic novel beforehand.

It's pretty darn close and the opening montage is eye candy for those who've read the book before watching the movie, but there are some changes that were made that when you see the movie sort of distract you from enjoying it as just a movie.

I'm not saying it sucked or that the changes that were made were horrific or anything, but they were distracting.

Spoiler:
OK, starting with the most obvious--the explosion in New York. Disguising it as caused by Dr. Manhattan? Wha? I'm guessing if they kept the alien invasion story it would have confused and made people think it was pulling an Indiana Jones 4.

No Captain Metropolis? They had shots of The Silhouette and Dollar Bill dead, Mothman getting taken away to an asylum and all that, but nothing on Captain Metropolis. Hell, they put him in the Minutemen picture, but they didn't even show him dead. I guess it saves time not explaining who he is when he's trying to form the Watchmen, and just getting Ozymandias to do it.

Overall it was really good. Lots of blue penis, though.

EDIT: A preview for the Black Freighter DVD came out this week:

That's definitely what I've heard a lot from others, it can be more enjoyable to people who haven't read the graphic novel but at the same time it's not like the movie butchered the story or anything ... or so I generally hear.

Saw it earlier today and I really enjoyed it. I personally haven't read the novel yet myself, though I plan on picking it up pretty soon. A few of my friends I was with had read the novel and still enjoyed it, though they noted that the ending above most things was altered in a way they didn't really care for.
Spoiler:
Supposedly the movie makes Dr. Manhatten out to be the "evil" of sorts, while that isn't the case for the novel?

But yeah, very impressed. I'd rank it up there along with Batman Begins, Iron Man, etc, and supposedly filmmakers thought this was one comic that'd be near impossible to adapt? My friend mentioned something like that, but from most of things I'm hearing it sounds like it turned out pretty well.

Re: your spoiler, Xeo:
Spoiler:
In the graphic novel, Ozymandias and his company had been working out how to make teleportation a possible mode of transportation for the rest of the world since Dr. Manhattan proved it could be possible. The problem is they could never perfect it. Every time they would try to teleport something, it exploded on arrival.

Secondly, Veidt/Ozymandias' company was working on genetic splicing, hence why he has a giant lynx/tiger/big cat as a pet. In the graphic novel, he has a secret island where he has all these missing scientists, writers, artists, etc that are working on this one big project that he doesn't want anyone to know about.

The Comedian, while flying home from a mission, sees the island, discovers what Ozymandias is doing and flips out (he goes to his old archenemy's home, without his mask and spills his guts that something bad is going down, though not saying what).

Anyway, what the people were working on isn't really revealed until the end, but it this giant squid/octopus/alien-like monstrosity.

Ozymandias reveals that he's teleporting this giant creature to the center of New York City, with the intent that it'll explode on arrival. Nite Owl and Rorschach, of course, fail to stop him and Silk Spectre II and Dr. Manhattan arrive late because the explosion's energy had kept Dr. Manhattan from seeing it in the future.

So in short, the giant squid-type thing that Ozymandias just drops on NY, it's chalked up as an alien invasion. NOT as something Dr. Manhattan did as an attack on the U.S.

Now with humanity much more concerned with aliens, they cease their battles between each other and unite, just like Ozymandias wanted.

It's pretty much the same sort of ending, just now everyone's ganging up on a different person.

Definitely read the graphic novel, though. It's got so much that wasn't included in the movie because it would take up too much time and would confuse the hell out of people who don't read comics/understand Alan Moore's insane genius/etc.

Oh, and I've sort of said it already, but I absolutely adored that opening montage. As a fan, I could have walked out of the theater right after all of it and would have been absolutely happy. THAT was the religious experience for me. I couldn't stop giggling at so many of the details that were woven into it. Fucking beautiful, Mr. Snyder.

The first half of the movie is pretty damn close to the book, then it deviates after that. I still loved it, even as just a movie.

EDIT: Did they address the Keene Act in the movie? I know Laurie mentioned it over the dinner, but it might not have been made clear for most people to get. That the Watchmen and all masked vigilantes were told to "hang up their capes" or face jail time. Rorschach was the only one who said 'fuck that' and kept bagging rapists and murderers.

Hahaha! Yeah. That's awesome. So many little things in that to pick and choose from for their brilliant little ironies.

I'm tired of reading idiotic reviews. Especially from people with either fanboy bias or who bitch and moan that they don't get it.

So I finally saw it today. I thought it was quite good actually... a few things I thought were laughably predicable (hitting the button), but it was in a good way. I had my friend explain the difference in the ending and I agree that what they did for the movie worked better for the movie. That sounds odd... meh.

Yeah, if they'd kept "the squid" it really wouldn't have made much sense as it needs the foundation I mentioned in a spoiler to Xeo.

The hitting-the-button scene happened in the graphic novel, however, when Laurie first hit it in Nite Owl's basement she was looking for a cigarette lighter.

That was another odd difference from the graphic novel--the second Silk Spectre doesn't smoke in the movie. Apparently the execs at WB didn't want characters deemed as "good guys" to be smoking and setting a bad example. Hence why Comedian, an obvious asshole, can smoke cigars, but Laurie is deprived of her meth pipe-like tobacco-holder.

A few things that were odd:
Spoiler:
It isn't explained in the movie how Laurie got the gun to shoot Ozymandias with near the end. In the graphic novel, when Dr. Manhattan and Silk Spectre II arrive too late to sae New York from the explosion, they are standing among hundreds of bloody corpses. Laurie walks by a cop and you see her looking at his gun in its holster. It's implied that she pockets it and uses it later.

Also, there was astonishingly more blood in the movie than in the book. For instance the scene when Laurie and Dan are fighting the "top-knot" street toughs in the alley on the way to see Hollis. They do beat all those guys up on their own, but they didn't really kill anyone, or stab them, or any of that. Or like in the scene with Big Figure trying to get at Rorschach in his cell. Rorschach does tie that guys hands up to make it difficult to get at the lock, but they DO NOT severe his arms off. They cut his neck so he will be dead when they try to cut around him.

And lastly, I LOVE that the two Bernards are hugging each other just as the explosion occurs in New York. Oh so deliciously funny to those who read the book.

Looking forward to the Black Freighter anime that's coming out.

Just read the Graphic Novel, just read the Spoiler for the movie ending.
Spoiler:
They should have kept the alien thing. They wouldn't have to give any air-time to the island dwellers or anything. They can just say "He has an island where they were making this thing and Comedian stumbled upon it". Problem solved, right? The alien thing was cool, and it made a good ending. I don't see why they'd really have to change it that much.

What's another 10 minutes to mention this stuff?

I think it was less time and more believability. Please see spoiler for details.

Spoiler:
I think the best argument for the change is that in the comic the "alien" only attacks New York, whereas in the movie ending all major cities in the world are attacked, thus giving better reason for countries to band together against a common foe. I think it would be easier to do what they did in the movie than to make that many aliens and have them all attack like that

I keep hitting up TV Links to watch and re-watch the opening montage. I'm so fucking impressed with it.

*Note: I paid for two tickets to see the damn movie in IMAX and I do intend on seeing it again in theaters and buying the special edition DVDs, so for all you, "Boo piracy!" folks, don't worry I'm paying my fair share.

I saw it today. I really enjoyed it. It stayed true to the spirit and feel of the book. The "big change", honestly, was good. I thought it was kind of better than what was previously there.

The "Under the Hood" featurette was the best part to me. But that whole DVD was a big fuck yeah for Watchmen junkies everywhere really.

Yeah, that was great too. It was awesome how the interviews sometimes directly quoted the "Under the Hood" sections of the comic book. Also the "Nostalgia" commercial made me fansquee a bit.
