I'm utterly pissed...

Army drops re-enlistment bonus

Last update: 9:19 p.m. EST Feb. 25, 2009
WASHINGTON, Feb 25, 2009 (UPI via COMTEX) -- Corporate executives aren't the only ones losing their bonuses these days -- the U.S. Army says it has dropped an additional bonus to soldiers who re-enlist.
The Army ended the special bonus after exceeding its retention goal, Stars and Stripes reported on its Web site Wednesday. The more than 7,900 soldiers who re-upped rather than leave the Army before their contracts expired Oct. 1 beat the Army's target by more than 700.
The Army had announced in December that soldiers slated to leave active duty by Oct. 1 could be eligible to receive a re-enlistment bonus of up to $18,500. That additional bonus was missing from the Army's latest message Feb. 13 outlining its Selective Re-Enlistment Bonus-Enhanced Program. The change went into effect Feb. 20.
Army Vice Chief of Staff Gen. Peter Chiarelli said last month recruiting has improved since December 2007, which happens to coincide with the onset of the recession. Economic conditions will be taken into consideration when retention programs are considered, he said.
"They've got to go ahead and look at those and tell us whether or not we have to offer the same bonuses today that we've offered in the past," he said.

Yeah, that definitely sucks, but everyone's bleeding these days.

Obama also put in a salary cap in the White House. So even his senior staff shouldn't be getting any bonus or raises any time soon.

Some people actually NEED this money though.

Anyway... I thought you would be freakin mad too. =P They put a Stop Loss on the reserves too. I don't understand.. if people are killing for more soldiers... how did we meet our quota?

Basically, the bonuses were to keep soldiers in because no one wanted to join the military. Recession hits, people start losing their jobs and cannot get new ones, so military starts looking like a good option, and recruitment picks up. Because recruitment picks up, they no longer need to bribe soldiers to stay in, so no more bonuses and instead that money goes to pay the new soldiers since the military is on a fixed budget like the rest of the government.

You get your actual pay, at least that isn't being cut. And while you say you need that money you have to look at it this way: who needs it more, you or that guy that just joined up because he lost his job and his house and has no where else to go but the army?

Besides isn't it a conservative ideal to cut needless spending?

If you're already in the military why do you need more money for re-enlisting? I'm sure there are people who need it, but there are a ton of benefits you're already entitled to. Even About.com says the Army offers so many "it's hard to keep track of all of them."

$20,000-$40,000 for re-enlisting? Jeez.

Yeah, I guess that they were getting paid little too much for leaving everything behind and risking their lives for our country whenever they went out on a frontline tour.

Sheesh, no wonder they lowered it.

Well, you know, do you want to give them a fish and eat for a day or teach them how to fish so they can eat for life?

Even you mentioned they're getting FREE college education among their other benefits. Candidates for high paying positions are often more likely to snatch up the job if they've got military experience.

Don't get me wrong- I think it sucks that I wouldn't be getting a bonus. But my time ends two years from now, so they might have it back by then, though I doubt it. But indeed, the bonus were just a bribe to keep soldiers in.

That wasn't really my point. My point is that the average soldier gets paid around $30,000-$40,000 a year( http://usmilitary.about.com/library/milinfo/pay/2007Pay/blsalenl.htm ) There are servers that I work with at Chillis who get paid more than that. Now, if we're paying waiters more than the men and women who go out to protect our country, we've got a problem.

So yeah, the military sends them to college, and that's a great thing, but not everyone joins the military just for the benefits, people in my family and many people I know included. For these people to afford to stay in the military, they need the extra money.

So the people in the military get paid like anyone else from the middle class. My dad was an industrial painter for 30 years and he only made that much a year, and we lived comfortably. You realize they make almost $20 an hour? I highly doubt that a server at Chili's makes that much, most of what they make comes from tips, so you can't compare the two because.

And also, with the free college education and hands on training, once soldiers are out of the military they have the chance to make WAY more than that, depending on what their qualifications are. Plus, they get free housing and medical care. Do you know how valuable that is? A one-time $20,000 bonus is not that big of a deal when you look at it then, especially when the government can put that money to better use helping the people who don't even have jobs.
