I don't want to go into detail here...

Long story short my WD 500GB Essentials crapped out last weekend. Took a lot of stuff with it. I did EVERYTHING humanly possible to try and salvage any data, but yeah. My last bet is to take it in to some local computer shop and see if they can repair/replace stuff physically.

So, just reminding you guys ... BACK THAT STUFF UP!!!

You never know.

In the meantime, let us know some of the things you lost! If there's a way to share with you without having to make you look for things, and re-download them, per se, then we'll help.

If you had DBZ stuff, but lost it, I have the whole series, I wouldn't mind sharing. I also have the complete (and some rare) soundtracks to all sorts of anime/video games. Wouldn't mind sharing those as well.

*Demi-fiend looks at his Backup folder on his external.

I also have two drives on this system and about a gazillion DVDs.

I'm covered.

(also, I thought this thread was about some kind of new VIRUS OF MASS DESTRUCTION (tm))

DS, you know anything about giant external enclosures for multiple drives? The problem with my new PC is that it's a slim one... I can't even get a second drive in there, and I'm kind of sick of having all these externals (160GB, 250GB, the dead 500GB one, 1TB and a newer 2TB one). I'm going to try and get everything from those small ones on this new 2TB one and might get a second one. The 1TB one is completely full of anime and most of it I haven't even touched.

But yeah, I see an alternative might be looking into those huge multiple enclosure cases, I saw a few recently at a tech shop and most of them looked like alien spaceships or something.

I don't know much about time, and don't plan on using.

I've got a full tower case with room for 6 (!!) drives.

Hmm, yeah I just wonder how safe they'd be.

I was going to turn this gigantic old computer I bought from a friend years ago into some network drive and whatnot... until I opened it and noticed it doesn't even have SATA support and it's the ugliest thing I've ever seen. SO, I'll just continue using that tower as as shelf.

I guess I'll just hold off for awhile and see if I can get a secondary, normal computer and just fill it up with drives. I'd like to do some RAID action eventually, especially after this slip up with my 500GB external... now I'm just counting down to when the others break.

Redundant drives (1.5 TB), hard copies and burned data, as well as online backup of my most important data.

I'm not a dork, I've suffered through meaningful loses. Not mine, personally, but restoring an entire SQL database for work was a fun endeavor when our remote colo crashed and took the entirety of our server backup with it.

Me losing my important docs (about 20GB) is nothing. I back those up regularly because I know drives fail. They do not last forever. Ever. I used to go through a loss every six months on my old laptop because the drive could only last about that long, so I'm used to it and it's no big anymore. With the ability to back up data onto a disc, online, or to another HDD, it's not a big thing.

It's just a matter of actually doing it that falls upon the user.

Nothing to back up since my harddrive was stolen. T.T all my anime was on that and my music too. I hate starting from square one.

That's true, you'd have to start from circle one, then.
