So, the Perseid meteor shower is supposed to peak tonight (Aug 12, 2010). If you are able, try to get outside at night in a DARK area (if you can't see the whole little dipper, its not dark enough) around midnight to sunrise local time and you'll see up to 50-60 meteors per hour!
I'm going to try to see them tonight and maybe take some video. Anyone else going to try to see them? Wikipedia entry Info for this year EDIT: changed date to be correct (Last edited by Lord Alexandor on 08-12-10 07:57 PM) |

I watch it every year and it's always rather awe-inspiring.
I've sat and watched it at the beach a couple nights this week already. The thing that sucks about where we live is how hard it is to find really dark places since there's so many cities grouped together, not to mention the street lights and everything. And even if you find a cool place off the side of the road, cops show up and tell you can't park somewhere. We've had a few really good, dark years, but even when there was partial light pollution, we still got a good viewing out of it. |

We used to go out to this one rest area, but it's gotten crowded and every now and then the cops showed up with their spotlights on to make sure people weren't doing anything. They were rather nice saying they understood why everyone was out and weren't going to ticket anyone.
We tried this one bay for the Orionids, and it seemed to work well, although there were some streetlights. We're going to see about parking in the mountainy areas. |

Well, in a sense, both of you are correct.
Earth started passing through the peak last night and will continue through tomorrow. You can watch the meteor shower all week if you really wanted to. But yes, tonight would have the most meteors in the least amount of time. |

Well, it was ridiculously foggy in my section of North Cal last night, and I couldn't see a single star in the sky.
I hope it's clear in the next couple of days.. Did any of you go watching last night? |

Ben saw one of the metors as we were leaving the OC Fair, but that is about it. What is really awesome is that next year we will be out in the middle of freaking nowhere so we will have a great view... as long as the sky is clear at least. | |||

Yeah, it was really cloudy for the most part last night. We went down to the ocean, where it was sometimes clear, but most of the time the cloud coverage made it difficult to see.
Ended up watching it laying on my roof, in the back, and saw a few big and bright ones along with the smaller, fainter ones. |
