So, I am a Playstation Plus subscriber. I got it the day it came out on the PSN and it has been getting some harsh reviews. Mainly, is the $50 a year subscription your way to game? First, let's take a look at the "Plus" (No pun intended) side of things. The advantages of being a PS+ Subscriber - Free games. Everyone loves free games. Once a month you get a free PSN title, two free PS1 classics, and several Playstation Mini games. - Beta testing priority. You will always have a chance to test the hottest games before everyone else does. - Full game trials. You download the full game of your choice on the Playstation Network (PS3 titles) and you have one hour to play around with it. If you like it then you can purchase the game (While it unlocks all of the trophies you have earned during the trial). - Discounts on select PSN titles. This is a pretty neat addition. Don't like the 9.99 price tag? On select days, PS+ will drop that price from 25-50% off. Sony has also just announced that all Playstation Plus Subscribers also get a discount on their warranty plan (Two extra years for 45 bucks) - Automatic Updates. Setting your PS3 to turn on by itself on hours that you are not gaming just to update the games you play? This is convenience at it's finest. No more worrying about having to update. And here we go with the bad side of things: - $50? For games I don't even want? This can be a major turn off for all of the free stuff the services provide. - Once the subscription ends. Everything you downloaded for free will no longer be useable. "FREE" games only. Not DLC, not Discounts, just the free stuff that you downloaded from the service. Once you re-activate your subscription. You are pretty much good to go. - Most of the services don't interest me. Hulu Plus? That costs an extra 10 bucks a month. Extended Warrenty? Nah. Who knows what else PS+ will throw at you. If they charge me more for Cross game voice chat. I am gonna throw bricks at people. - The Free stuff is kinda...lacking. Like sure, they are free. But I don't download most of the stuff PS+ offers. Just my personal opinion though. Now that you have seen most of it's benefits. Is it worth it? Well, it really all depends on you. Do you play your PS3 a lot? It might be. Do you spend a good chunk of your money on gaming? Perhaps. Do you play different systems more often than you do your playstation 3? No. Personally, that $50 investment has actually paid off How? Well there were some killer deals on PS+ for games I have not even picked up yet. Like Fl0wer, Fat Princess DLC, some themes, and more. I have also gotten Qore for free, which also landed me some demos. But I have yet to receive any betas. I could use some LBP2 Beta, or Twisted Metal! Cmon Sony, don't disappoint me. Make it happen. I guess you can say it was worth it. But in the sideline, the cons are bigger than the plus side of things. But the service just started a month ago. So I still have 14 more months left to go on this (There was a deal on getting three free months when you subscribe to PS+ for a year) |
