That would be fine, Phoenix. More judges are always welcome, and this is part of the Xeogaming birthday celebration so we want as many people to participate as we can.
I have posted my scores, you all did very well. I am definitely going to need everyone to get some judging in by Saturday so that we can get final ruling. I have spoken with Bitmap about making the winner a custom userbar like the one in my signature, that will flash between the name of the story and "Winner XGF Story Competition 2010". That is your prize. Now go, judge people, judge! |

Okay, I'll get them in tonight or tomorrow. I have a bit of time to waste, but not enough to go through everything again.
Good job, though, everyone. |

I'll judge as well, I suppose, seeing as how I really don't have very much else to do with the competition. Though what would have been my entry is posted if anyone is interested in critiquing it.

So I'm no one to judge someone elses work so i'd like to not vote if that pleases the court.

I have begun judging and I will finish by saturday =P
Sorry I have been in and out. We are going through hell because of this change of command and the phasing into Operation New Dawn. |

Same as True. I have two of the four judged, and I'll probably finish them tonight.
In any case, Xeios, do you want people to unofficially judge your short story, just for criticism purposes? I know I would like that once I post mine, as well. |

Yeah, that would be fine Phoenix, my story could be judged, informally of course.
Also, I know as a writer I would like to see more constructive criticism, not just for my own work, but for others. No offense intended, but every other review of someone's work I've read is too basic, highlighting what was good, but nothing that was not so good. If there was nothing bad to note, then why did the person not receive a perfect 10 for every category? Just a thought, at least. |

I don't know. I love for people to destroy my work like how you're judging, Xeios, but I can never manage to come up with criticism like that. I would love to (in a friendly way) be able to tear apart someone's work, but I just...can't?

Much as I hate to make the Americal Idol comparison... you are Simon. I'm the one that goes for the broad picture, since it is really hard to post in depth rants on a really bitchy mobile phone whose signal keeps dropping every 2 seconds while working in a parking booth with the worst cold I've had in a decade.
... I will try to be harsher with your guys' *evil grin* (Last edited by Elara on 08-27-10 01:32 AM) |

I fixed Phoenix's obvious Xeodential typos, xD.
But yeah, I do think that there is one major judging category missing here. We have grammar, and we have spelling, but we have nothing about actual writing ability. I mean, grammar is good, but it really jsut scratches the surface of the writing world. For example, the Repairman Jack series uses sentence fragments to build suspense. Sort of makes it an art, and in that sense, it would be rated very low. However, the use of those fragments actually makes the writing very suspenseful and entertaining. But then, I'm just bitter about the 2 True gave me, because it was similiar to a movie I'd never heard of before. |

Mmm... well, that is a very good suggestion. I think we shall implement it for the next one.

Originally posted by Elara I agree with what Vulkar is saying, too, but adding it in to the scoring might be difficult. How would that be categorized? |

Under "Writing Style?" xD.
Let's finish with this contest though, before we get too deep into the next one. |

FYI, I have no problem with fragments, but too many of them can get obnoxious. Although, I tend to couple many fragments with run-ons in order to vary sentence structure a bit, making the story come across as easier to read.

Agreed. Fragments can be good, especially when representing written word. I usually just take that into account when I am scoring the current categories... as right now I really see it as distributed between them all. But, I can see a "writing style" category as a possibility... the problem there is that some people might mark people lower just because they do not like that style... but then again, that happens now, so meh.
Anyway, today is last day for judging! So far, True, Phoenix, Xeios and myself have judged all four entries and Vulkar has judged the three he did not enter. I take it that Cairoi is not going to judge, even though participant judging was his idea? (Last edited by Elara on 08-28-10 09:18 PM) |
