I'm not kidding. It even cought me by surprise.

My dad got his hands on just about every DVD of any Star Trek series / movies / shows you can imagine. And yet, I feel like I should watch them along with him.

See there is one thing about my dad that I never knew about. He told me stories on how he would come home from school back when he was young, my grandmother would cook him cheese sandwiches / tomato soup, and he would sit in front of the TV watching the classics.

Now, growing up, there was Star Trek, the next generation. He even enjoyed those as well from what I understand. However, FOX54, the station that broadcasted the show when I was a growing teen would only play the shows at Midnight, so I never knew until now that my dad would watch the series.

Well, he came home today from work with a big box and as usual, I am at work. I come home, he knocks on my door, and tells me to "Come check this out".

Lo and behold! More DVD's than even my collection! He somehow won it on the internet and was really excited. Asked me if I was willing to watch from start to finish with him.

Why the hell not. Dad and I have really bonded really well ever since I moved back in with grandmother. Hell, he became quite the gamer and is always wanting to know the newest and hottest game coming soon. Both of us are getting Diablo 3 when it comes out. And seen how I never seen Star Trek, I think it would be great if I bonded with him and checked the show out. Should be interesting.

Now I made a thread in the past about how I lived under a rock. Never seen Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, etc. So for the first time ever I get to check out the show for the first time just like my dad did when he was growing up.

Anything I should know about?

Captain Pike.

Except his version of Star Trek ended after one episode.

But Spock is the coolest character in a TV series.

Not really. If you're going through the whole series, you'll figure it all out along the way.

Some episodes were written by people who became famous sci-fi writers.

Many aspects of the show inspired scientists to delve deeper into the science of the show and discover that many of the things that were used or discussed could be proven true, thus unexpectedly advancing what we know about the universe. There was a documentary about it, "How William Shatner Changed the World."

Really, Star Trek is a phenomenon that's changed so many lives. When I met Rod Roddenberry a few months back, he was mentioning that he met this woman who had children and was being brutally beaten constantly, to the point that she wanted to just kill herself. But then she remembered an episode of Star Trek that she loved, about the caretaker who did everything it could to protect its young, and it kept her alive and fighting enough to protect her children.

Then there's my absolute favorite story:

I love that Jimmy Doohan story, it makes me tear up every time as well.

I really hope that you enjoy the series, Bitmap. The effects are going to be cheesy as hell for a long time, but the shows themselves are really awesome. Welcome to the phenomenon.

In what sense?

We've got three decent films and three crappy ones, a holiday special where everyone's coked out of their minds (or maybe just Carrie Fisher?), and a ton of published fanfiction that people are building their fandom on.

This coming from someone who's been to one of the Star Wars Celebrations and never been to a Trek con.

Meh. Just a thin joke not to stir up anything or whatnot. But I do prefer Star Wars by far since it dives a little more into fantasy with all the Jedi stuff and I was always all into it growing up with toys, Lego's, videogames (still), etc.

I never got too big into Star Trek, but I've seen most of the Generations/Next Generation era stuff (show and movies). Great stuff. I remember Deep Space 9 was on around these times too, that one was okay. I think there was another around these... but I can't remember exactly.

I do want to rewatch the old films someday though.

It would be cool if they had a new series going now. Or you know, something SCI-FI in general.

Sorry, I think I came off too bitchy in that post. It's been a long day and my feet hurt. Waaaah!!!

Really, I miss all the action/adventure/sci-fi/fantasy shows we used to have throughout the '90s.

My list of favorite shows went Hercules, Xena, Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, Adventures of Sinbad, Brisco County Junior, Lost World, Star Trek: Voyager, it goes on and on.

Then they had all kinds of other stuff: Beast Master, Mortal Kombat, Queen of Swords, Conan the Barbarian, Mutant X, Earth Final Conflict.. shit. There was SO much more. Cheesy effects and all.

Nah you didn't. Guess I get defensive with my Star Wars.

It's probably more simplistic / romantic stuff in a sense, straight up good vs evil, but more adventurous and it's just like ... a really good old children's tale that sticks with you I guess and hopefully older folks should be able to enjoy it as well. That's kind of what came to mind when you brought that up.

I might like Star Trek more than I used too thesedays though. Do they develop multiple sides of the story well? My all time favorite anime is probably Legend of the Galactic Heroes, which always gets comparisons to Western sci-fi shows like Battlestar, Babylon 5, and some other show I think that's escaping my mind. Rogue you should look into it, and everyone else if you like this kind of stuff... I'd maybe put LOGH above Star Wars if it weren't for nostalgia!
