Ouch, I totally forgot about judging. Can I do that tomorrow?

Seeing as how not every participant has judged, would it be fair to count participant judging?
For instance, every person has an extra set of points, aside from Vulkar, meaning his score would be much lower. If we are doing an average score, then I suppose that would be better, but not by much, as Vulkar would be penalized more for a not-so-great review, where he might have had the fourth person reviewing giving him a point shower. |

Well, I already cannot do average points unless everyone gets a score adjustment for not having spelling be judged by you. But that really isn't a hard fix. I suppose that since I am going to be at work all day that we can let Cairoi get his judging in today and then look at the scores... then figure out what do to.
So, how do we do the score average? average the overall or average each category? |

I would say average the overall.
But Xeios is right; there will be a lot of problems because two of the participants never judged. It will only work if they all do, or all don't. (Last edited by Phoenix on 08-29-10 12:56 PM) |

Looking at the average for all the scores, I'd actually be in second place for the total points, but in third place if there aren't any participants judging, so I have no problem with counting participant judging, xD.
Anyway though, I'd kind of like to see an average for each category, to see who had best grammar, story, characters, etc, but also have an "overall best story" thing which has the average for total points. |

Ok, I think I agree with everyone when I say the grading rubric needs WORK
Here's my suggestion: Grammar & Spelling: (mesh the two into one category) Plot: (this refers SOLELY to the story itself. The progression/variety/believability of events, as well as the events themselves). Character: (no real changes here) Writing Style: (instead of description, this catagory tends to leak into all the others. I think that by gathering it into catagory, the other ratings will be more fair.) Creativity: (once again, no real changes) |

Well, yes, the grading rubric needs work, BUT, it's too late into the contest, we will simply use the new rubric for a later contest.
And Elara, I didn't judge spelling because it's silly, everyone got a ten in that category anyway. So if you want to give a better view on averages, simply add 10 to my score, or subtract 10 from everyone else. But either way, it wouldn't affect overall score either way. For instance I'll show something for Cairoi for instance, to show how little adding/subtracting 10 points matters. Elara: 56 Vulkar: 52 Myself: 40 Phoenix: 56 True: 53 Average: 51.4 With an extra 10 points from me: Elara: 56 Vulkar: 52 Myself: 50 Phoenix: 56 True: 53 Average: 53.4 See, a difference of 2 points, and that's how it would be for everyone that had 5 judges. People who had 4 judges would see an increase of 2.5 points. There's no reason to add the points, because in the long run, the scores would all be affected in the same direction. +2 or +2.5 points. |

Well, I did say it was easy to deal with. And yes, new rubric next time. However I am certain I gave at least one 9 in spelling....
But yeah, I will do the averaging when I get home... tab browsing is not a strong suit of my phone. |

Can I win by default just for being good looking?
And yeah, Cairoi's ideas sound mostly good, especially the part about getting ride of descriptions. My creative writing teacher actually advised me to not always spend a lot of time describing things, especially in the sort of stories I write, because it just takes away from what the reader should really be concentrating on. I agree with the aformentioned ideas. We have a tight limit and we have to tell a story besides having a vauge setting and features causes the reader to put himself in the story you decide if the building is a skyscraper or a single story house.

Well, I do think that stories need at least a basic outline of the environment, otherwise its a weakness in writing. However, I also say that the more time spent describing an environment, the less time is spent on a story.
My example of this would be Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time series. His descriptions were excellent, telling us everything. However, in at least the forth and fifth book in the series, the descriptions dragged on, never letting us focus on what the characters were doing. In the end, I got bored with it, making me take almost a year to get through his fifth book. So basically, description is good, but it can turn away readers. That's not to say that description can't have its place. Tolkien, for example, was very good at describing the world in The Lord of the Rings. However, his story was built around the world. To not have fantastical descriptions would be a shame. But me and Tolkien are very different writers. Description goes great in his books, but what I write would be damaged by paragraphs upon paragraphs of description. |

I think some people like description more than others. For example, I blew through the entire Wheel of Time series in less than a year from start to end... well, book ten at least. And I loved the description because it made the world real to me. Same with LotR (start to finish in 2 months, on top of summer classes). And yes, in some cases it can drag on... like a rea world setting, but in fantasy it is good to describe unless it is something identifiable with everyone, like a barn or something.
I am sorry I haven't got the scores up. Work has be opening 5 days a week so sleeping is becoming an issue for me. I swear I will get it done after my nap today. |

*Posting so that you can double post.*
You need to take a shorter nap, xD. The suspense is killing those of us that don't want to calculate the averages ourselves! |

Awesome. Everyone who competed was great, and we should take a moment to thank our judges.
I'm thinking we should have more writing competitions. |
