I just got the best news that I've received in a long time. After two strenous tryouts, playing against people that were national champions last season (the extent of my experience was playing at a small rink until age 12, playing for my school at age 13, then not playing competitively again until I was 18, when I played in a not-very-talent-ridden 18 and under league) and much better than me, I received word that I made my college hockey team. Hockey is my greatest passion and love, even more than writing, and I've been very emotional these last two weeks with the tryouts. The first one was a disaster. I had a severe skate malfunction five minutes into the first practice that I couldn't fix until almost an hour later (with over half the tryout done), and then took a puck to the head about 20 minutes in. Needless to say, I wasn't on my A-game that day. I was very beaten up over it for a week, until the second day of tryouts, which was this past Sunday. I played much better this time, securing (as I just found out) my spot on the team. Everything else has been going pretty horribly lately, too. Things with my girlfriend have been rocky at best, I've been struggling to make friends at college (I'm a freshman), and have been fighting a rollercoaster battle with depression since I was in 9th grade. With nothing else going right in my life at the moment, this should be wonderful, right?

Not exactly. Predictably, this good news came with some not-so-good news too. About 3/4 of the way into the second tryout, I was pulled down on a breakaway and ended up going feet-first into the boards. The initial shock was bad, but the puck was still loose, and adrenaline kept me in the play. Once my opponents gained possession and started up the other way, as I gave chase, the pain set in. It was so bad to the point where I could barely even stand on it, let alone skate. I pushed myself, though, out of pure desire to make the team, and I finished the tryout through the pain. I got an ace bandage later that day, and iced it and kept it elevated that night, praying that it was only a sprain. Today, one of the RA's noticed the bandage, and asked what was up. I explained, citing it as a sprained ankle, and he asked to see it, as he is a third year major in pre-med. He assured me that, as he's just a student, he isn't qualified to pass judgment, but that it looked to be worse than a sprain, and highly advised that I go to the hospital, or at least the infirmary for a better opinion. I told him that I would, and he went away.

I didn't go to either. If I were to go to the hospital, or even the infirmary, chances are the doctor would tell me that I wouldn't be able to play, at least for the beginning of the season. If it's a break, I would probably miss the whole season. My girlfriend, and the friends that I've talked to about it, are very concerned and are urging me to see a doctor. I've assured them that if it doesn't get better in the next few days, I'll go and see one. In all honesty, I have no intention of seeing anyone about it. Hockey is one of the few things that brings me joy in life, and right now, it's the only light at the end of a very dark, very bleak tunnel. I know it's probably a stupid move to risk my health for that, but I need this team to bring some kind of stability into a hectic, awful start to my college career.

...probably not the wisest thing to post in a place where you still have multiple friends. But i understand the need for something stable, but as you are a smart friend of mine i would have thought that you would have figured that if you play with a bum leg/ankle, then you'll eventually suffer the damage and worst case scenario you'll break it/ make it worse, and be out for a lot longer than the season. Now how about a different scenario jawnsky. How about this, go to a doctor, have him examine you. if the worst rears it's head and it is broken you'll get a cast and be out a few games or the season. Then you'll try again next year (you are a freshman, and you've already made a good impression). It'll suck, and suck hard but, it means that you'll be able to play again...ever. I'd go with that, plus pre-meds are all talk (this statement is false) so it's probably not THAT bad, but even so i'd recommend you have it checked out. But even so you may not choose to go with what i've said in which case i hope you the best.

You said "even so" several times. xD

What did you mean about not being wise to post somewhere that I still have multiple friends?

Well that's of no consequence to me, frankly. It's not some big secret. It's not like I'm going to tell them that it's better just to get them off my back. I have every intention of being honest, but I'm hoping that it's either just a sprain, or that mind over matter kicks in and I don't have to worry about it haha.

Hey down. I have to say that being in the army and having weak ankles, I go to sick call when I mess my ankle up in the slightest.

I did what you did. I ran on it, I did my pt test on it. Turns out that I had a hair line fracture. Not bad enough to put me on a permanent profile, but bad enough to keep me off of it for six weeks and to have a piece of paper in my medical records stating that I can't go to Jump School. Soooo... My advice to you is to go see a doctor.

It's not fun. You're going to make this injury worse. Believe me.. If you go on with that you're going to need surgery.

Ok, first of all, congrats on making the team.

Secondly, you need to go to the doctor asap. The ankles are a really easy thing to fuck up, and if you let this go then you could permanetly end your playing days if it is more than a sprain. Imagine if you go down on the ice and the captain or coach finds out that you have been concealing a fracture. That will get you off the ice for sure. However, if you go to the doctor and explain that you need to miss a few days because you have to heal they will be fine. Remember that they want you healthy out there so you can do your best, and they would rather you sit out for a few days than play and risk doing irreparable damage to yourself.

Hopefully it is nothing, but it is always better to be safe than sorry, especially when you are an athlete.

I'm starting to think that you guys are right. It's feeling a lot better, but it's still really sore. I have two weeks before practices start, so I'm thinking about going to this doctor my brother told me about when I go home this weekend. He's like, just a regular doctor pretty much, but apparently he's a favorite of hockey players, so he has experience dealing with people like us (i.e. crazy people). So, according to my brother, he will probably just help out without giving me orders to not play.

Good. That it is feeling better is a good sign, but it sounds like you found the right guy to go to. And two weeks should be a good enough period for it to heal before playing.

Honestly, I'm not sure of that feeling better is a good sign. I'm not a doctor, and I don't know a whole lot about broken bones, but I do know that if you don't treat an injured bone, then it'll still grow back together, it'll just grow wrong.

Now, if it grows wrong, I think (but again, don't know) that you do initially feel better. However, as the injury is never really healed, then your ankle could reach a point where it is never as healthy as it once was.

As for seeing a doctor, think of it this way...

How well could you play hockey on an injured leg? Even if you just grit your teeth and push through the pain, you won't be as could as you are without an injury.

Besides that, if untreated, and you do play on an injured leg, you'd only be able to get through some practices and maybe a couple games, before the injury catches up to you, and you could quite possibly never play hockey again.

Also, for what you said about not seeing a doctor because he'd probably tell you not to play hockey...if you admit its bad enough that a doctor would say you shouldn't, I'm pretty sure that you know on your own that you should stay off the ice. Skipping a doctor's appointment you need won't fix any of your problems.

GO TO THE DOCTOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously.

Like....go.

Get that shit taken care of.

If you don't, you'll regret it.

I played hockey for 11 years. I too, have that same passion for hockey, and it destroyed me to my core when I couldn't play anymore. I played as goalie, so I had the typical knee problems. Thing is, when I was younger, they got dislocated WAY too many times. Now, my family raising me the way they did, we all had this "tough it out" mentality, and I would usually relocate them myself. If not myself, then my grandmother would. See, turns out the "tough it out" mentality was due to a lack of funds and insurance, so the idea of having to go to a doctor for something that I could have prevented all together by not being stupid (Yes, my decision to continue playing hockey made the family consider my injuries "self-induced." And I suppose they're right.) But yeah...I never had my knees checked out properly. They never healed right. Ever. To this day, there's nothing I can really do without major surgery(but at the same time, as long as I'm being "normal" and not playing hockey anymore, I can make due, they just hurt when the weather is bad, is all.). Then, BAM, while going through hockey try-outs, because despite making the team initially, there was still a try-out period every year, when I was in high school...but I dislocated my knees. Both of them. Only, they didn't go the right way. See, when the knee dislocates, it goes on the outside. Mine went inward. Apparently that's TERRIBLE, horrific damage. They took me out on a stretcher, and I was in tears. I'm no doctor, but something didn't feel right, and I just knew. I knew I was done. Everything I worked hard for, for 11 years, all that practicing and taking those hits to attempt to impress my dad, everything I did that DID in fact impress my step-father, who was now dead at that point, everything was just done. Even if I was able to get everything taken care of, they didn't want the liability of allowing me to play again.

To most, I'm perhaps making this out to be more dramatic than it should be, but I think you'll understand a little, City, this case specifically. Go see a physician. Figure out what you need to do, and do it. I know it's disappointing. I know it'll suck being out for a little while....but...it's MUCH better than losing it all.

I appreciate the advice and concern, everyone, and took your advice and went to see the doctor. He said it was a pretty bad high ankle sprain, and gave me some painkillers and said to keep icing it and keeping it wrapped up like I had been. I also happened to have some crutches lying around the house, which he advised me to use, as the less weight was on it, the better (but I obviously couldn't just stop going to class because of it). I saw him on Friday, and since, it's feeling even better than the last time I said that it was feeling better. I can walk on it fine without the crutches now (I'm still using them just as a precaution) and even went out for a short run yesterday. It wasn't 100%, but the pain was at a minimum, it felt great compared to how the last two and a half weeks have felt. Hopefully I'll be 100% by Sunday, our team has a pre-season tournament (for ranking purposes and whatnot).

And Katana, it's nice to see someone that understands the passion for it, as you put it. haha.

Update: We had a pre-season tournament yesterday. Our team got destroyed in all four games (9-1, 9-3, 7-0, 8-1). I missed the first game, but played in the next three. In the process, I re-injured the ankle. Evidently, I tested it too soon.

Also dislocated my elbow. I'm a fucking mess. xD

Hey lemme tell you a secret.

If you're going to strengthen your ankle and it's sprained and it's reoccuring...

You're going to need some Physical Therapy.

Get a pilates stretch band. Put your foot in the middle hold your band on both sides and stretch it.

Look up some exercises to strengthen it. Instead of jogging or stressing it out with exercises get on the eliptical. I should know because NAGIS knows how I always ALWAYS sprain my ankle.

Get yourself a maleoloc brace. IT DOES WONDERS!!! I have a picture of my ankle and I still have to send it to my phone lol.

Edit: I rolled my ankle twice yesterday. After passing my PT test. XD

Been a while, but I'll update: the ankle is back to 100%, and is feeling great. I've played three games in the season so far, after sitting out the first one to make sure I was fully healed.
