Waiting on Obama to make a statement officially, but it is all over the news that Bin Laden is dead and that U.S authorities have his body.

If this is true, yay. My fiance did raise a very good question though... now that he is dead, Sadam is dead, and Obama has released his long form, who will the Republican's new boogeyman be?

Just gonna post my FB status here:

We should never celebrate the loss of human life, regardless of the deeds they've done, or the idealogical differences they possess. It may be a good thing that the person is gone, but that is no reason to be glad for one's death. As Monty Python once said, "Every sperm is sacred," and that stays true, even becomes truer as time goes on. Just something to keep in mind.

Also, the Republican boogeyman is Obama, duh. He has been for years now.

I feel the same thing you are there FX, but one of the many faces of terror was basically eliminated. Not celebrating the fact that he is dead. But celebrating that a part of terrorism is now dead.

Unfortunately 99% of the people celebrating outside the whitehouse (And in my area blowing up Fireworks) are possibly all WOO HOO OSAMA IS DEAD AMERICA!!!!! Just quite doesn't get the picture.

Also the "HES DEAD" comment I made above? Pretty much answering the question in the OP.

My heart felt as though it stopped as I pulled myself into my car after covering a Native American powwow to hear the radio fire on as I turned the key in the ignition. The first sounds: "This just in. It is confirmed. Osama bin Laden is DEAD."

The next comment went, "And his son. WHAT. A. DOUCHEBAG. Using a woman as a human shield?"

I agree, FX. Life is precious. Since hearing the news, I was at a bar watching my boyfriend's band while people toasted the man's death. It felt weird.

I mean, he's got the blood of thousands on his hands. I get it. There's a sense of relief and victory. But yeah, there's something wrong about celebrating a death. I feel like it's no better than September 11th when video of people cheering in the streets of the Middle East was broadcast.

As seen here:

But honestly, this image that's been going around is sort of a suckerpunch of patriotism:

Yeah... I mean, we have cut one head off of a hydra... the beast is still there and people need to recognize that. It was one of the bigger heads, and there is the "yay justice/vengeance" aspect... but this is far from over and in fact it is most dangerous now.

For anyone traveling, be advised that there is an advisory to be on guard for anti-American attacks right now. We don't know what, if any retaliation, will occur.

Also, considering where he was and how he was living... how is our relation with Pakistan going to be effected? I mean, they cannot be happy that we sent a task force within 35 miles of the capital. At the same time, how the fuck did they not know he was there?

Not to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but there are no pictures of the body and the one that's been going around is a proven fake (link), and the body has since been buried at sea.

Suspicious.

I understand the following Islamic law for the burial... but it would have been nice to get more pictures and such.

I understand why they did it. You bury him in the ground then there is a marker, a rallying spot. You drop him in the ocean and who the hell is gonna find him except the people that know the coordinates?

That's one helluva groaner!

Everybody keeps thinking that it's over but I'm of the opinion that it's just begun. He was just one person and anybody could fill the role that he did. The only thing accomplished is that we likely royally pissed off the remaining extremists and we should be on guard now more than ever, though everybody around me seems to think otherwise.

Well, see, there are no pictures. At least none have been released to the public yet, anyway.

And the body was disposed of rather quickly (supposedly following Islamic tradition), so no one can prove or disprove that it was him by burying him at sea, giving the explanation that it was so his grave would not be a shrine or gathering place for Al Qaeda members and so on.

They claim they have DNA evidence saying they're 99% sure it's him, but they don't tell you how the testing was conducted or what have you.

It's just all rather unsettling.

Jewish and Islamic law both state that the dead need to be buried within 24 hours of death, I have confirmed this. Burial by sea is permissible but very rare.

I think the biggest sign that this is for real is that if he was still alive and the President came out and said he was dead there would be a video up within a day mocking us. I think once a week or so goes by and no video turns up that it will start sinking in.

Besides, with the election next year, do you honestly think Obama would come out and say Bin Laden was dead unless he was sure of it? The backlash if it was false would destroy him.

Exactly.

And as far as the burial is concerned, if they went about it according to the Islamic rules, then good. I'd like to see more propaganda about that.

There are several things that I am concerned about. One is the backlash toward Islamic people in America. This whole situation may reignite that sort of behavior, and we would once again be no better than those who wronged us. So the notion that our government handled it with at least some respect toward Islam should hopefully knock at least some heads together.

Also, I, without a doubt believe the man is dead. Mainly for reasons Elara stated. In fact, almost entirely. But this is far from over. I was hearing bits and pieces of it Sunday night, but it didn't really hit me until I was driving home with a very good friend of mine. He's a US Marine, and I reached over, grabbed his hand as tightly as I could, and couldn't help but say (as we listened to Obama's speech on the radio.) that this was nice talk for "This shit is far from over. We're sending more of you over. More often."

This is a "war on terror." not a war on Bin Laden. Do I agree with the notion of feeling wrong to celebrate death? Sure. Am I glad he's dead though? My very human response is going to be yes. But I accept and respect the human response to challenge me on that as well. But this is far from over. We're trying to fight an ideal...

I personally think things are not as black and white as what we're being told.

One of the most wanted individuals in the history of the united states, and according to the reports, we took a few blood samples, and dumped the body out at sea?

Something doesn't sound right with that.

I wouldn't be surprised of the USA dumped a body double out to sea, to satisfy the Muslim law, and are currently toying with his corpse as we speak.

On the flip side, they said they dumped the body to make them happy within 24 hours, but if they took a week to tell us, and spent that time double, and triple checking to see if it was really him, THEN tossed the body, that would make more sense.

It's just I'm hearing two different things, that we had him for a week, and that we killed him an dumped him within 24 hours.

Then again, I realize how morbid this sounds, but I'm a partial fan of the idea of crucifying his corpse in the middle of Ground Zero >.>

Why would they toy with his corpse? Is there a map to hidden treasure inside his body or something? Does he hold the cure for cancer?

I truly have mixed feelings about this

I have a feeling the worst yet to come.

Did you know since USA invaded both Iraq and Afghanistan over 100,000 people have died. Also since the USA invaded Afghanistan membership in Al-quada and other terrorist organizations have increased by over 3000% and over 25 new organizations have been created because of it.
As a result a certain amount of Muslims view the USA and her allies as the terrorist. Also it does not help the USA's case that they "illegally" created Israel either, out of land belonging to a Islamic nation.

All of this just to get 2 guys and with it a 14+ trillion dollar debt.

The USA and her allies will NEVER win the the War on terror if we keep barking up the same tree.

Technically it was the British that created Israel, not the US... we just supported it. You know, since Palestine was a British protectorate at the time.

But yeah, from a purely historical standpoint the Arab Muslims have a lot of very valid reasons to dislike white Westerners because we have not really been all that kind to them.

At the same time, a lot of Arabs are actually quite happy that Bin Laden is dead because Al-Qaeda also slaughtered them by the dozens for not following the jihadist rhetoric. With that and the democratic uprisings taking place in the Middle East, there is a lot of hope that the need for terrorist groups will begin to fade. Most of them started because they wanted change and it was denied them or they were screwed over, and they turned to extremism to try and get it that way. Bin Laden's number two guy, the one they think will take over now... he joined because he had wanted Mubarak out of Egypt and couldn't get it done years ago.
