He does sorta give off a Casey-ish vibe to tell you the truth. More of a Casey-trying-to-be-metal vibe, but a vibe nonetheless. | |||

Yeah, Casey didn't go so far as having earrings, but looking at things like his pants and the way he carries himself, just reminds me so much of him. Oh well.
It's kind of funny looking at Sara's Facebook wall. There are so many people leaving messages going, "I'm so happy for you guys!!!" These are mostly teenage girls and none of the family. Getting engaged and pregnant at 17 sounds like such a fairy tale, I'm sure. She still needs to get her GED since she hasn't been going to school consistently throughout her high school career. Anyway, I don't mean to sound judgmental. Shit happens, especially when you're a teenager in love, and I can only wish them the best at this point. So yay, growing up and realizing that at some point in your life nothing will ever be as it was. Honestly, I was looking forward to the big, fancy wedding her parents were going to give her in Washington, but because she got pregnant and needs to get married as soon as she turns 18 and to make sure they get on his insurance, there's not going to be a wedding. But on a non-Sara note, I aced all of my classes this last semester. Just waiting for the diploma in the mail. Had a great day away from the computer yesterday. Looks like I might get another day like it tomorrow with any luck since I need to be in Chinatown tomorrow night for a meeting. |

In like two years she is going to kick herself, just wait and see. I hate saying it, but odds are with me.
Congrats on the classes. I took the Miller Analogies Test today to get to work on Graduate admissions at Slippery Rock University. I had effectively three days worth of studying, and I choked like crazy... and still managed to pull off an above average score (437/600... average is apparently 400)... still have to wait two weeks to see what my percentile ranks are since that is what matters on this test, but I feel better knowing I at least got above the average score. In other news... does it seem like a bad idea to you guys for a really really (and I mean really) overweight person to wear a shirt with the logo for Crush orange soda on it? Or any shirt that says "Crush"? |

Originally posted by Elara Oh, believe me, I know what you mean. But like I said, all I can do is wish 'em the best. He posted a picture of "the ring" on Facebook a month ago and tagged her on it. And they JUST found out she was pregnant this past week. Getting engaged and married is one thing. Adding a baby COMPLETELY changes the picture, and that concerns me since he'll probably leave her not long after. Brandon and Sara's cousin (well, second-cousin) got engaged and pregnant at 17 a few years ago. Same chick who swore up and down that breast feeding was gross and that breasts were meant for men to suck on. Every time Katie came up in conversation, Sara would comment about how stupid she was and so on. Yup... Anyway, congratulations on the test. Is it like the SAT and you can take it again to get a higher score or something? Either way, I'm hoping for a high percentile for you. |

Yeah, you can retest to get a higher score. Same with the GRE (the other exam I could have taken... for twice the cost).
Results showed up in the mail... within my major I scored in the 93rd percentile, and overall I was in the 92nd. I was in the car when I read it, but I felt like doing a jig. |

CONGRATULATIONS! That's great news, Elara!
Well, I'm back from San Francisco. Went to gay pride with Stitch. It was so crowded, and you couldn't walk 10 feet without smelling weed. It was definitely better on Sunday, after the parade. Saturday was like a hipster rock festival in Portland or something -- too many straight teenagers hanging out smoking weed because there was a massive gathering multiple blocks-wide and they felt they could get away with it there. Sunday was full of pantsless men, dykes on bikes, men kissing (one couple fingering each other in the street wearing nothing but bondage gear and ass-less chaps), and the very rare, but occasional naked boob. Anyway, turned over the final draft of the newsletter. No pay. Fine. I'm more interested in getting it out of my hair at this point. Fuck everything, I'm off to see Neil Gaiman interviewed by Patton Oswalt tonight. (Last edited by Rogue on 06-28-11 02:49 PM) |

Lame, that guy should have paid you.
Pics of interview... please? Pride sounds like fun. Were they celebrating the news from New York at all? |

There was definitely a lot of "We love New York!!" stuff there.
Pictures coming soon! I just hope somebody taped the reading. Oh my god, it was AWESOME. This weekend will be interesting. Two anime conventions, a concert, a Voidcrush show, and a friend's party AND I have to watch my grandmother. Hopefully this fucking newsletter will be out of my hair by tomorrow. For your sake I hope so. You are far more patient than I am.
I really want ice cream, but it is such a drive to get it. Ugh! |

Someone posted a blurry video of the reading, but at least you can hear it all clearly:
It's the Bilquis portion of Chapter 1 of "American Gods." HI-FUCKING-LARIOUS. |

So the expected has happened. Sara and her boyfriend broke up. Among the things he wrote in this letter to her, which included a list of pros and cons (seriously...) of why he wants to have nothing to do with her or the baby is he would have more money.
Yep. Someone's getting sued for child support the moment the baby's born. Washington has dead-beat dad laws. If he quits his job or fails to provide for the baby he can and will be throw in jail. In the mean time, Brandon and Sara's mom is planning to move up to Washington to be with Sara. We might end up heading over to Phoenix to help her move. |

So... another set of friends are suddenly expecting. They're nearing 30 and are actually excited about being pregnant. I'm not allowed to say who (as you do know them, Elara, at least you know the guy involved), as I sort of consented to a verbal NDA while they sort out shit with other friends and family.
All I can say is, this couple have been together a year, and while the chick is more tolerable than his last two girlfriends (who put together are like 7 years of his life), I can only hope the usual shit I've been seeing with young, unmarried, pregnant couples doesn't happen with these two. |

Can I get a hint?
But yeah... what the hell is in the water? And poor Sara. I suppose this means that she is sure she wants to have the baby despite that. Big Tom should have some of his buddies hunt that jerk down. Got the acceptance letter from Slippery Rock University finally. I get to start as a post-bacc while I take some required undergrad classes for the teaching credential, which I am fine with because it means I pay undergrad tuition. I just hope I can get some kind of financial aid. |

Congrats, Elara. That's great news!
Yeah, there's a lot of craziness going on involving pregnancy. Got some good news on that front, though. Brandon and I got a card yesterday that was a sonogram. His Aunt Michelle's pregnant! She and her husband have been trying so hard for the last few years and I'm so happy for them. Their little girl is expected 11-11-11. Also, I got to spend time with Christina and Jayne a couple days ago. It was awesome. But now I've got a really bad sunburn on my back... and sore arms. Had to do some heavy-duty weeding at my grandmother's house, which now has a For Sale sign in the front yard. |

I am sure I mentioned it elsewhere, but lavender helps with the pain. And yes, congrats to Brandon's aunt, that is good news. I saw the pictures of Christina and Jayne on your facebook and wow she has gotten so big (Jayne, I mean, lol)
Financial aid is proving more difficult than I thought it would be. Apparently most of the bigger stuff is only for undergrads, so I am looking into a few things and waiting to be assigned my advisor so I can talk to them about such matters. In other news, my giant plummet in activity and lurking since yesterday is because A Dance with Dragons finally came and I've been glued to it. It is proving a good read so far, but I will kill George R. R. Martin if he makes us wait another six years for the next book. |

So I won tickets to this huge Star Trek con in Las Vegas happening next week. Despite being incredibly broke, Stitch and I are going for it.
In the meantime, my computer still has tabs open for the Elder Abuse hotline. I dialed it a couple times yesterday, but got one of those "All operators are busy" messages. I'm still really hesitant to call. This is REALLY going to piss off the rest of the family. |

It may piss them off, but someone has to do the right thing. I've been urging my dad to do the same thing to my grandmother's boyfriend (grandma's got dementia, he's trying to convince her that he and my aunts are trying to kill her and steal her money) but they want to try and get "proof" via recording first.
A Star Trek con? I am so envious!! At least tickets are free, hotels near Freemont are cheaper and buffets are always fun. My job hunt continues to be fruitless, and I am really starting to think that people won't hire me because I am from California. |

Yeah, on Friday (when Lola is SUPPOSED to come so I can watch her and my aunt insisted she didn't want to), I called both of my parents on the issue. I'm not even joking about my aunt's house. It's dingy, she and her husband are CONSTANTLY smoking, it's cluttered, it's FULL of yapping dogs and their dried up shit EVERYWHERE.
They never bathe her (which is something my mom does when we get her, which is rarer and rarer these days), and all they do is complain about how bad she smells. When we get her she smells of urine and excrement -- and we haven't bee allowed to take her in more than two weeks now. On top of that she's got my grandmother's money and is using it whenever she feels the whim. These are ALL forms of elder abuse. When I talked with my parents about these issues, they both told me that they fully agree, but they don't want to start anything because it's just going to get worse. My dad, being anti-government (considering himself more of a libertarian these days), kept insisting that it would be best to sort this out without being the county or state into it. But then he said, that since my aunt always blames him whenever things go wrong, I should get marching orders from Mom on this. I call her and she's also very hesitant -- she's lately been falling back on saying that she's trying not to think about Beth (that aunt) and her shit and concentrating more on saving for our upcoming vacation. I just don't know what to think. I don't think of my mom saying that as being selfish, but rather that this is just going to drag on either way and she's getting so aggravated that she'd rather think about something positive for at least a couple months before we're forced to reckon with reality once more. I suppose I'll wait until November (which I hope things get sorted out by then). Either way the painter that Beth hired to do my grandmother's house, which is now officially for sale, REALLY sucked. He and his people didn't take anything down from the walls (saying we didn't have to) and just painted around shelves and light switch covers, getting paint all over them and the carpet (since the asshole obviously didn't cover the floors either. Sorry to hear about the job search, Elara. I know that feeling. Hopefully this isn't a coastal prejudice deal like we always hear about from that side of the country. That's the thing, I never hear about it from this side, but it's like there's a rivalry that this side doesn't really care about. Hmm.. And yeah, Star Trek. We're thinking about crashing another con going on on the Strip. We'll see where that gets us. |

I think it's more of a "you are not native to this particular area of this state" kinda thing... they look strangely at people from Pittsburgh around here too, but at least they are kinda local. But me... I'm from Los Angeles, one of them big cities... and I say you instead of yinz. I'm not native at all.
Those painters should be dragged back there and forced to do the job right! That is such bullshit. |

Heh, when Brandon and I did this tour of Colossal Cave in Arizona, and the tour guide started with asking people about where they're from no one paid any mind to anyone else's responses, but when the moment I said "Los Angeles," out came the stares and dagger eyes. Hell, the girls directly in front of us, who joyously announced they were from San Francisco, gave us the DIRTIEST looks.
Well, good luck with the Pennsylvanians. I can already tell when Brandon and I hit up Oregon and Washington we're going to have to go through the same thing next month. Not to mention all the crap we'll get for being Americans in the Middle East in a couple months. |
