TL;DR? You know how the Pro-Lifers and institutions like the Catholic Church say that abortion stops a beating heart and we should protect the fetus since it is a human being, concluding that abortion is "murder"? Well... a woman came in to a Catholic hospital for treatment, pregnant with twins and ended up dying and the fetuses within her too, and when faced with a wrongful death suit from the family the hospital's defense was:
Emphasis mine. |

Pretty much.
So a fetus' humanity is only instilled when its convenient? The question is, though, with how people keep petitioning and protesting the reversal of Roe v. Wade, will this come back to bite the movement in the ass? (Last edited by Rogue on 01-26-13 04:19 PM) |

I feel like that hospital got owned, big time. Nothing like forcing somebody to eat their own words. | |||

Man...my senior year theology teacher would have had a field day with this. Woulda been nice to still be in her class and bring this one up. 12 years in a Catholic school, of course I heard all about abortion being wrong and how important it is to be against it. Although the enigma of my personal experience with Catholic school is that they taught me those things without teaching me to hate others with different opinions, AND they also had a pretty damned decent respect for science. Senior year "Science is God's way of looking out for us. If a doctor tells you your baby can not be born under normal circumstances and will kill the mother if she does not end the pregnancy, then the obvious choice is to follow God's will and save the mother's life." or something like that, and then she'd add "See? You can believe in God AND science!"
Can't say I agree with everything I was taught in regards to what my religious beliefs ought to be, but I'm damn positive I like the way it was presented to me. Without bigotry. But its things like this that pisses me off. Outside of my bubble, I saw this all the time, people using their religious beliefs, Catholics specifically, in my local area, in accordance with convenience. The only positive I can say is, maybe mistakes like this WILL be good for the fight against having Roe v. Wade overturned. I mean, I'm against abortion in the sense that I don't think it should be a go to unless necessary, but I do understand that there are extenuating circumstances, and health isn't the only one, and I don't believe in forcing my beliefs on others. Otherwise, my heart goes out to the family who has to suffer because of the this wrongful death. |

"Catholic bishops announce new rule: No more saying a fetus is not a person just to win a lawsuit"
Colorado's bishops are pretty pissed by the hospital's choice of defense, as you can imagine. |

Yeah, I saw this a little while ago, and it annoyed me quite a bit. I know they don't represent every organization or whatever they can be grouped as, but they're not really helping themselves by doing it either. That new rule or whatever at least does help, I guess, but as Elara said, [insert quotation on the post above]. |
