So do you guys stick with cow milk, or have you switched over to something else?

I don't think I'll ever give up dairy completely, but dropping dairy milk sounds like it can only be a good thing in many cases. Even the calcium you supposedly get from it isn't even good calcium, and not balanced out with the magnesium or something.

More interesting is hearing how this can contribute a lot to allergies apparently. So this is my first week back off of it and I tried some of the popular alternatives again, coconut, almond, and soy. Soy doesn't sound all that great now either... especially for men, lol. I didn't even like it though and also used it to mix with some alfredo, egh that ruined it.

But basically it boils down to my ass exploding and feeling bloated/cramps after a bowl of cereal, or glass of milk, etc... so that sums it up. Figure I'll jump on with the other stuff and stick with it to see how I feel. So far I like coconut a lot, that one sat with my stomach perfectly, though it was kind of watery (got the So Delicious brand). Sweetened Almond Breeze wasn't bad either.

So I might stick with coconut for cereal, and try some other stuff around to see if there's good alternative chocolate milks since that's my favorite thing ever.

I hear some of the non-dairy ice creams can actually be really good too. Might have to look into that sometime if I hit up Trader Joe's / organic stores or something.

I haven't given up milk, though I don't drink it as a beverage often. One alternative that I like is vanilla Soy Dream, especially in cereal. I like chocolate almond milk as well when I want a dessert in a glass.

This entire thread just reminds me of the ongoing Portlandia sketch where every episode the Portland Milk Advisory Board recommends a different kind of milk (squid milk, cookie milk, raw milk, etc) after denouncing the last kind they recommended in the last episode for causing various side effects.

I don't personally just drink glasses of milk, though I did the other night, followed by a glass of diet soda and quickly regretted it all.

Anyway, I just use regular 2% with my high fiber Trader Joe's cereal, and sometimes put it in my coffee, but that's about it.

I've never really used the non-dairy alternatives, though it seems most people I know who don't use cow's milk prefer almond milk.

I've heard people like hemp milk.

Not sure if I saw hemp today lol, but I did see rice. I guess the coconut milk I got was unsweetened, so no wonder it was kind of watery. Found some vanilla flavored one so I'll be curious to see how that is tomorrow. Also picked up some dark chocolate almond, so it'll be cool to see how that turns out...

Dessert in a glass is how I treated chocolate milk myself, but yeah got a little out of hand sometimes and either way I just always felt terrible afterwards. So it'll be cool if I can find an alternative that doesn't mess with me...

Had no idea Trader Joe's has their own cereal? I remember when my parents went there once and got a bunch of stuff, I swear -everything- was amazing, from the bread, to the frozen meals, produce, drinks, it was crazy. I gotta run up there sometime and see if I can really notice a difference at the cashier.

I love Trader Joe's... I wish there was one closer than Pittsburgh.

That aside, I am a firm convert to the ways of almond milk (original, unsweatened) especially for cooking. It has no more carbs than regular 2% and you cannot taste the almond in cooking. It is still thinner than regular milk though, so when we were by ourselves we would often buy a small thing of milk for certain dishes that needed the thicker texture... though since moving in with Ben's mom (who likes milk) we tend to use actual milk for most cooking and almond milk is stuck with drinks, cereal (not much now that we are low carb), and those occasions when I am the one doing the cooking and she isn't paying attention.

For the record, I absolutely hate soy milk... the after taste is just gross. Have not yet tried coconut or rice milk though.

The vanilla coconut is definitely different, kind of has a "real" vanilla flavor kick to it. But I warmed up to it pretty quick and like it honestly. I picked up some coconut ice creams today, so it'll be cool to see how those taste... at this point though I'm sure I'll like it.

Do they ever notice when you mix in almond instead? Haha. I'm sure that'd be fine to me, but yeah soy... never again. Meal ruining for sure.

Generally, no. When it was just the two of us, Ben knew after he had some in mashed potatoes and I told him that I had used it... but not so much here.

Used it the other day to make milkshakes. Granted, the ice cream had milk in it, but still.

Whole cows milk is probably the only thing I'd drink.

Mind you, not that nonsense from Wal-mart. The healthiest thing you can get is raw milk. It's kind of hard to get legally, but if you can, it doesn't have any of the health problems that come with normal milk, and it tastes way better.
