Repost and fill it out too, because wheeeeeee!
What have you done in 2015 that you have never done before? - This was a pretty big year for me. Got in my first car accident while driving (not my fault, I was waiting for my turn to go at the stop sign), got my first smart phone, booked my own cruise and traveled to countries I hadn't visited before with just Brandon (will probably cover this later), had an MRI done, served on a jury, witnessed a suicide, cooked Thanksgiving dinner, saw a lot of plays, went to formal tea at a lot of places, hiked to the Griffith Park tea house, discovered lots of new breweries, became an activities coordinator at work. There's loads more, but chances are I'll be asked about a lot it later so I'll be answering them then. Did you keep your new years resolution from this year, and will you make one for next year? - Yes. Kept the trying one new thing a day and maintaining the positive things jar. Bran and I just finished reading the contents to each other. Did anyone close to you give birth? - Our friend, Angelina, had her son. She's more of a friend-of-a-friend, though. Did anyone close to you die? - My grandmother in mid-March. I gave her eulogy. Did anyone close to you get married? - No weddings this year. Did anyone close to you get divorced? - I don't think so? Where did you travel to in 2015? - Flew to Italy by way of Germany. Stayed in Rome for a few days seeing the sights and visiting Vatican City, checking out the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica. Took a train to the port and caught our cruise ship. Sailed to Sicily (Messina), Malta (Valleta), Greece (Argostoli and Corfu), Montenegro (Kotor), Croatia (Dubrovnik, Korcula, and Split) and then spent a day in Venice. We visited lots of walled medieval cities, including the one used in "Game of Thrones" for King's Landing. Also went to Arizona a couple times this year, once for faire and the other for Thanksgiving. What would you like to have in 2016 that you lacked in 2015? - I'm actually amazed I lived up to last year's hope of traveling more. 2015 was a very full year. Hm, perhaps 2016 could bring less stress and more peace of mind, but then where would the fun be? What dates from 2015 will you have etched in your memory, and why? - Those two weeks I spent traveling in September will sure stick, but then there was also Christmas this year (will go over the why later.) What was your biggest achievement of the year? - Got medical insurance? I also held my own after the accident and didn't let the bitch who hit me try to just leave the scene. She didn't have a license or speak English and she mocked me while I kept repeatedly asking for her license, proof of insurance, and registration. Finally got my bodily injury settlement check from the insurance company covering the car she was driving, which wasn't hers. What was your biggest failure? - Honestly, I don't know. Got sick A LOT. It comes with the job. Did you suffer injury or illness? - Oh Christ. Let's see. On my 30th birthday (Jan. 14), I thought I was having a heart attack at work and had to go get an EKG. I ended up having a cold that same day, which was the first of many I had this year. On the heels of the first cold, my hips and back were constantly hurting. Doctor prescribed stretches and painkillers, which were working well up until my very first traffic accident, wherein a car rear-ended mine at a stop sign, aggravating my hip and back pain all over again and warranting two visits to urgent care. I kept feeling dizzy off and on and had to go through getting my eyes checked, being told it's not that. Had blood drawn; it wasn't anything to do with blood sugar, thyroid, liver, etc. Went to my general practitioner who looked at me like I was crazy and then referred me to an audiologist. After two visits to them, they said it wasn't my ears, and they referred me to the neurologist saying it sounded like migraines. He couldn't make hide nor hair of my condition, but had me do an MRI. It was normal. Haven't gone back to any doctors for the weird feelings since. Lastly fell down the stairs in my house when the railing broke away from the wall because someone didn't secure it to the stud when they built my house 65+ years ago. What was the best thing you bought? - Cruise tickets. Also bought a new bed, new sheets, a new blanket, and actual Christmas presents for my parents and Brandon (a 7.25-qt Le Creuset pot and a few little things for them, and a new TV and lots of little things for him.) Whose behavior merited celebration? - Brandon's. Outside of the usual stuff, when we were at a show for a band he loved and ended up in the moshpit, we got separated due to his getting thrown across the room. I kept taking punches to the back and getting shoved by huge dudes pretty much just trying to beat the shit out of anyone just for fun. Meanwhile I'm standing at the front trying to get decent pictures of the band for Bran. Suddenly I see in my peripheral this arm behind me, keeping me from getting beaten too badly. I assume it's the overweight guy who'd been standing behind me for some of the beginning, but I turn and it's Brandon and he's got his arms spread like a barrier around me and he's taking punches to the back and just sort of smiling at me. I just felt overjoyed and hugged him and just felt like I'd suddenly found my white knight. Took a few more pictures and then cleared out of there to sit at the bar with our friend's girlfriend for the rest of the night. I was pretty banged up for a few days, but people were running around in there with their faces cut up. At the end of the night, I saw the lead singer standing near the bar and took Bran over to get his picture taken with him. Pics from that night: Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed? - Different people we encountered on the trip, most especially the woman who kept trying to cut the line into St. Peter's Basilica by standing next to Bran and me, pretending she was there the whole time and that she couldn't speak English. Her husband seemed to get the message and fell back. Really, we didn't come to like most of the people we encountered in Rome. Seemed like people were only nice to you if you were buying something from them. The nicest people we encountered otherwise were the immigrants working the shops and such. Where did most of your money go? - Toward all the stuff I mentioned in the "best thing you bought" question, along with all the groceries I was just constantly having to buy this year. I should get a second house in Trader Joe's cereal aisle since it feels like I'm almost always there. What did you get really, really, really excited about? - Other than the trip, I guess "Fallout 4." Bought the Pip-Boy edition. What song will always remind you of 2015? - "Uptown Funk" since it seemed like it was always the clients' favorite song. The other would be "Agincourt Carole," which I played A LOT when we celebrated the 600th anniversary of Henry V's victory at the Battle of Agincourt. We also went to see lots of Shakespeare plays this year, including one that explained all of the English histories and the lineage. Compared to this time last year, you are: a) Happier or Sadder? - Happier, but definitely more stressed. b) Thinner or Fatter? - I was thinner. c) Richer or Poorer? - Richer. What do you wish you would have done more of? - I keep answering "made new friends," and yeah, I really need to meet people. What do you wish you would have done less of? - Same answer as before: "Worried less." Yep. How did you spend New Year's Eve? (December 31, 2014) - Didn't do much. Sat around drinking Rumchata-spiked hot chocolate and watching "Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion," apparently. How did you spend New Year's Day? (January 1) - Brandon, Lee, and I went for a nature walk at Mt. Wilson. How did you spend Valentine's Day? (February 14) - Roughly the same answer as before: worked the Doctor Who convention. Kept ending up on John Barrowman detail. How did you spend St. Patrick's Day? (March 17) - I had to check my calendar, but it was apparently when I went out for Greek food with Christina. A few days before it, we went to Lebowski Fest, though. How did you spend Easter? (April 5) - Attended Wondercon. How did you spend Cinco de Mayo? (May 5) - Nothing special that night. Apparently stayed in and didn't do much else. Free Comic Book Day (which fell on May 2 this year) is always a bigger holiday for me. How did you spend the 4th of July? - Went to a friend's party, but left early when my stomach was hurting so bad. Brandon stayed behind, and I watched over my senior cat who was freaking out from all the explosions. The day before was better, in that it was a paid day off so we went for a hike up Mt. Hollywood and made it to the Griffith Park Tea House, which was very recently placed there by a group of artists and soon after removed. How did you spend Patriot Day? (September 11) - Flying around, trying to get to Rome. Stopped in Portland, Oregon, then Frankfurt, Germany, where we were stuck for several hours because CONDOR FUCKING BLOWS. Finally made it to Rome late at night on the 12th. At least on the 11th, while we were in Portland, we got to eat at the Rogue Ale Public House on the terminal and use our Rogue Nation membership cards for discounts. How did you spend Talk Like a Pirate Day? (September 19)? - Was in on the Greek island of Kefalonia, watching wild sea turtles swim up to the docks after we rode a row boat through an underground lake. How did you spend Halloween? (October 31) - For some reason, last year I ended up answering for practically half a week with this question. I think I was just excited since it was around Halloween that I got hired. Halloween was pretty big this year in that it was my first time having it at work and it seems like it's the biggest holiday we do anything for at the center with the clients. We had our own party with them and danced and showed off our costumes. At night Brandon's band played at the Doll Hut, where he dressed as a luchador, and then we went to a friend's party. Since she likes aprons I got her one as a hostess gift. She was really drunk and ended up going around the party wearing nothing but the apron and comes up to me, fanning out the skirt portion and says, "Look what my best friend got me!!" It was a pretty great Halloween season this year. We made it to a few events and attractions like people's backyard mazes and dramatic readings of horror comics. It doesn't ask about Dia de los Muertos, but hey might as well answer for it. We celebrated that on its official day at Olvera Street. How did you spend Thanksgiving? (November 26) - Was out in Arizona with Brandon's family. Helped cook Thanksgiving dinner with him mom since his grandma had broken her arm in two places. Spent Black Friday hiking in Sedona. How did you spend Christmas? (December 25) - Brandon proposed, we had my dad's side of the family over, I talked to my grandpa about WWII, and then we went to see "Hateful Eight" in 70mm. Similar to Halloween, we did wander out a lot to look at people's decorations this year. Did you fall in love in 2015? - Bran and I hit 11 years together. Went to Palm Springs for our anniversary. Later, as mentioned in the previous answer, we got engaged. What was your favorite TV show? - Game of Thrones remained on top. Rick and Morty was a close second. What was your least favorite show of 2015? - Out of the tiny amount of stuff I watched, True Detective season 2. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year? - Well, I previously had no opinions of the faux-celebrity billionaire, rug-sporting jackass everyone else knew as "The Donald" from "The Apprentice," but yeah fuck that troll. What was the best book you read? - I was still reading Icelandic sagas, and those were great. I also read some amazing graphic novels like Shigeru Mizuki's "Showa" series and his "Onward To Our Noble Deaths," "Habibi," "Thrilling Adventures of Lovelace and Babbage," "Nimona," "Fun Home," "Blacksad," and "The Divine" which was semi-based on the lives of Myanmarese twins, Johnny and Luther Htoo. When it came to books without pictures probably one of the better was "Women of Will: Following the Feminine in Shakespeare's Plays." What was your greatest musical discovery? - I ended up listening to A LOT of crap this year since we play the radio in the vans for the clients and when you change stations on them, they get mad, so I ended up sitting through way too much Taylor Swift. With that said, I suppose I may answer that Mark Ronson, who wrote "Uptown Funk" featuring Bruno Mars and "Valerie" featuring Amy Winehouse, is someone I think is quite special in this day and age. His sound that he creates is pretty freaking cool. I also tried out listening to electro-swing since England's entry at Eurovision this year was just that. What did you want and get? - Booked my trip to Europe. It would have been in 2016, but then the cruise line told us they wouldn't be offering that itinerary any more and were dropping Korcula, Croatia as a port of call, so away we went on the last ship to do it. Korcula: What did you want and not get? - Not really sure. I guess decent service at some of the restaurants in Europe. I get that in these cultures you have to ask for the check because they consider it rude to just put it on the table, but it's damn near impossible to get their attention. What was your favorite film of this year? -"Mad Max: Fury Road," no question. Second time around we saw it in the Chinese Theater on Hollywood Blvd in IMAX 3D. So worth it. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you? - I turned 30. On my birthday I went to work and then thought I was having a heart attack, so I had to go to a clinic and get an EKG. It was normal. I did, however, have pretty bad cold that suddenly ran through my system. We had dinner at Mastro's where I had a giant steak with lobster mashed potatoes. I celebrated more over the weekend, particularly that Friday since my boss gave me the day due to my being sick. That day we ran around everywhere from Walt Disney's grave to having flaming scorpion bowls of rum at a tiki place then drunkenly running around the porn section of a video rental store in North Hollywood and laughing about how there was a Purell dispenser. The next day went to tea at the Millennium Biltmore's Rendezvous Court among other things, and on the last day got to have lunch with my mom's best friend who was visiting from Australia. What is one thing that would have made your year more satisfying? - Perhaps if I had managed to lose more weight. My feet are just so sore all the time. How would you describe your personal fashion concept of 2015? - Nothing really all that different from previous years. I wore more dresses as casual wear, though. Started wearing T.U.K. shoes and shopping at Buffalo Exchange. Toned down the high volume of graphic T-shirts I was wearing, just a smidge. What kept you sane? - Getting ramen, trying new things, and remembering to keep something positive on the horizon. Brandon and I started doing date nights, which made long weeks much bearable knowing there'd be something good to look forward to Friday night after work. What celebrity/Public figure did you fancy the most? - No new celebrity crushes this year. What political issue stirred you the most? - Honestly, I can't think of any right off. I didn't get that into a lot of politics, despite listening to NPR every freaking day. What news story was the most overblown? - ISIS. They got WAAAAAAAY too much space in everything, which just gives those asshats more power. Oh and Bruce Jenner's transition. Who do you miss? - Lots of people. My grandmother passed earlier this year and I had a few breakdowns over her at random. Did you reconnect with anyone? - Occasionally saw a few con friends from time to time, and it was great the handful of parties I went to where I saw friends we only see once a year. Tell us a life lesson you learned in 2015. - Sometimes it's worth it to spend a bit more. I dunno. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year. - I know I've used "The Parting Glass" before, but it's always applicable, it seems. "Of all the money that e'er I had I spent it in good company And all the harm I've ever done Alas, it was to none but me And all I've done for want of wit To memory now I can't recall So fill to me the parting glass Good night and joy be to you all" What plans do you have for 2016? - Hopefully figure out our venue and do more planning. Planning on working a couple cons (Anime L.A. and Gallifrey One) going on in January and February. What are your resolutions for 2016? - Letting the resolution of trying new things ride. What will you be doing for New Year's Eve? - Already past. Went to work, came home, Bran and I read our Gratitude Jar entries, then went to our friends' party where we announced our engagement to our friends in Brandon's band and those attached. It was a good day. (Last edited by Rogue on 01-07-16 10:45 PM) |

What have you done in 2015 that you have never done before?
- Quit my existing shitty job to work from home (taking care of my grandfather, but it still counts). Did you keep your new years resolution from this year, and will you make one for next year? - N/A and no. Did anyone close to you give birth? - Crystal did. Again. And she's pregnant. Again. Did anyone close to you die? - No. Did anyone close to you get married? - No. Did anyone close to you get divorced? - I think so? Hard to say with Chris and Lisa. I hope so, though, I want that bitch out of everyone's life. The world would be better off if she just fucked off to a cave somewhere and lived as a hermit. Where did you travel to in 2015? - Didn't. Can't. What would you like to have in 2016 that you lacked in 2015? - Some hope for the future of the country? That'd be nice. Oh, and a functioning vehicle. What dates from 2015 will you have etched in your memory, and why? - June... June... shit I forgot the day. The day I quit Dollar General. What was your biggest achievement of the year? - Eh, nothing really. Finally starting to speak up for myself maybe? Being out of retail's done wonders for my mood simply because I don't need to give a damn about how some piece of shit disguised as a monkey in a suit might react. God damn I hated that place. What was your biggest failure? - No significant accomplishments, still no real training for future employment - and due to circumstances it's not currently possible. Did you suffer injury or illness? - Nothing significant. What was the best thing you bought? - Well it would've been a bike helmet if the fucking thing fit... Whose behavior merited celebration? - Chris finally got sick of Lisa's bullshit and left, bringing Ronnie with him to get her away from the toxic environment she was stuck in (alcoholic chain-smoking mother that can't stop getting evicted, just for one issue), so I guess that. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed? - Prior to the above, though, that entire family's drama was the goddamn Jerry Springer Show. Lisa was cheating on Chris with Crystal's boyfriend, who apparently got them both pregnant, then Crystal took him back anyway and decided that instead of moving into a two-bedroom apartment with a family friend that she actually liked, she'd rather sleep in a car with him. And that's just within the last month and a half. Where did most of your money go? - Games? What did you get really, really, really excited about? - Ace Combat 7's announcement. I thought the series was dead. What song will always remind you of 2015? - Realistically, none. My memory isn't very good with dates, so... Compared to this time last year, you are: a) Happier or Sadder? - Happier, but frustrated. b) Thinner or Fatter? - Heavier, but no fatter. Moving a 180 lb. old man tends to result in a bit of extra muscle. I still have a little more gut than I'd like (amount I'd like: none), but that's not new. c) Richer or Poorer? - Richer. What do you wish you would have done more of? - I need to actually stick with things. What do you wish you would have done less of? - Gotta work on the anger. It's... an issue, still. How did you spend New Year's Eve? (December 31, 2014) - Half the time forgetting it was a holiday. How did you spend New Year's Day? (January 1) - See above. How did you spend Valentine's Day? (February 14) - Working at Dollar General. How did you spend St. Patrick's Day? (March 17) - I have no goddamn clue. How did you spend Easter? (April 5) - Working at Dollar General. How did you spend Cinco de Mayo? (May 5) - Not a goddamn thing. How did you spend the 4th of July? - Relaxing at home, resting and recovering from my shitty job. How did you spend Patriot Day? (September 11) - Is that a thing of course that's a thing why is that a thing Seriously, the way people slap "patriot" on everything they can is just unbelievably creepy to me. How did you spend Talk Like a Pirate Day? (September 19)? - Talking like a pirate, if software piracy counts. How did you spend Halloween? (October 31) - Playing video games. I'm too old for trick-or-treating and there's nothing interesting around here anyway. How did you spend Thanksgiving? (November 26) - Not doing a damn thing. How did you spend Christmas? (December 25) - Visiting parents, as was usual. Likely won't next year though. Did you fall in love in 2015? - Nope. What was your favorite TV show? - Still Top Gear. What was your least favorite show of 2015? - The wonderful thing about almost exclusively watching Netflix is that if I don't like something I can stop watching and completely forget about it. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year? - Echoing your Trump here, Rogue. What was the best book you read? - I oughta get back into reading. What was your greatest musical discovery? - Not much, really, but since I finally got around to playing Sleeping Dogs, I found Couldn't Get It Right and oughta look into more from Climax Blues Band. What did you want and get? - Mostly just video game stuff. I have simple tastes, I guess. What did you want and not get? - A working fucking car. What was your favorite film of this year? -Well, Kingsman is the only one I watched and I liked it, so... What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you? - Visited my parents for my 27th, as usual. Probably not happening this year though. What is one thing that would have made your year more satisfying? - If I could stop getting angry so easily. How would you describe your personal fashion concept of 2015? - Simple. As usual. Mostly monochrome shirts, plain black jeans or khaki pants, black shoes. What kept you sane? - Getting out of a shitty retail job. What celebrity/Public figure did you fancy the most? - N/A. What political issue stirred you the most? - A growing despair at half of our government's refusal to do its job, if that counts. I think the Flint, MI Lead In The Water story broke after the new year, so it doesn't count. What news story was the most overblown? - Hard to say, I don't pay much attention to most news, honestly. Who do you miss? - Every offline friend I've ever had? Did you reconnect with anyone? - Nope. Tell us a life lesson you learned in 2015. - Pay more for shoes. Seriously. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year. - Nah. What plans do you have for 2016? - Nothing special. Keep taking care of my grandfather, stay sane, etc. What are your resolutions for 2016? - None. I'd forget it by Easter anyway. What will you be doing for New Year's Eve? - Didn't do anything. (Last edited by Astrophel on 01-07-16 06:51 PM) |

At least you've finally left the job that seemed to give you such grief.
Also, great to hear you're taking care of your grandfather. It's one of the best things you can do in life. |
