Breezed through my reading of Asimov's "Nemisis" for the book club... still such a fun book.

Just finished "Dragon Age: Asunder", one of the novels that bridges the gap between the second and third videogames. The character Cole makes more sense now. Just picked up "Dragon Age: The Masked Empire" which goes into the background of the Orelisian Civil War that is going on in the game. This should be fun.

I'm still about... I dunno... a sixth of the way through. I keep getting distracted by all the manga and graphic novels I've been picking up.

In the past few weeks I've read most of "Vinland Saga" (each book is several hundred pages), read the first volume (years 1926 to 1939) of "Showa: History of Japan," which was also several hundred pages.

The last one I finished was "Habibi," a really depressing, but really well-drawn and written story about an Arab girl and a black toddler she adopts. It goes much, MUCH deeper than that, but it's hard to explain the story without giving too much away. You learn a lot about Arabic and stories Muslims tell. "Habibi" was also really long, but I got through it pretty swiftly.

Currently reading "Showa: History of Japan" years 1939-1944.

Been reading a lot again. But, as per usj, not the month's book club read.

I mean, I started "Hero With a Thousand Faces" while I was serving on that jury last week, but it's like reading a textbook, so I sort of lapsed into other things I'd taken out from the library.

Finished since last post:
- Several of the huge volumes of "Showa: History of Japan" by Shigeru Mikuki
- "The Borgias" by Alejandro Jodorowski, drawn by Milo Manara
- "Onwards Toward Our Noble Deaths" by Shigeru Mizuki
- "Blacksad" by Juan Diaz Canales
- "Chew" vol. 8
- "Blacksad: Amarillo" by Juan Diaz Canales
- "Gaijin: American Prisoner of War"
- Matt Fraction's first two volumes of "Sex Criminals"
- "The Thrilling Adventures of Lovelace and Babbage"
- "Blood on Snow" by Jo Nesbø

Currently reading "My Friend the Mercenary" by James Brabazon, which is freaking great so far.

I've been making my way through the Mistborn trilogy by Brandon Sanderson, and I have to say that I love this series. The premise alone makes it worth checking out... most fantasy stories that you read deal with some hero that needs to save the world, right? What if the hero failed?

I always find the failure stories more interesting. Less predictable.

Finished the mercenary book. Good read, though it dragged the last few chapters, but such are memoirs sometimes.

Currently in the middle of two books, along with a buttload of graphic novels. The first is "The New World," which is a story about a marriage where every other chapter is from the wife's perspective in the present. The husband died and this group of people harvested his head to cryogenically freeze it and the wife is trying to get it back. The other chapters are from the husband's perspective, living in the future.

I'm also reading a book called "Women of Will," about all the ladies in Shakespeare's plays.

I'm buried in so many books right now. It's ridiculous. I'll be in the middle of something and then go out and buy more or order more holds from the library.

Currently going through Nicholas Pileggi's "Wiseguy: Life in a Mafia Family." Next up is "Prisoner of Tehran."

Previously read the latest "Vinland Saga" book and was trying to start up "Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World," and before that I dropped "Wolf Hall" to start and finish reading "Ladies in the Parlor." I have way too many books, no time to read most of them, and yet I keep collecting more and more and more.

Finished the first volume of "Bitch Planet," a graphic novel which came heavily recommended. It was okay.

Currently reading Mark Twain's book, "Is Shakespeare Dead?" which goes over his lack of faith in the belief that the man from Stratford wrote the plays. He's not quite a Baconian, but he lays down all his evidence that it couldn't possibly have been written by the poor Irishman with no education or worldly experience.

We listened to the audiobook for "The Martian." That was good. The movie leaves out a lot, but it was still good.

Maybe it doesn't count as proper reading but I'm reading a lot of things to do with forum software lately and SEO-related things.

As well as of course the news provided by the BBC Kent RSS feed

Any and all reading counts, Cammy.

Finished the Twain book, and moved onto a post-apocalyptic novel called "Station Eleven." Getting through it pretty quickly. Granted the library sent me a large-print edition.

Been reading this non-fiction book on the shipwreck of the Sea Venture, which is believed to have inspired Shakespeare's "The Tempest." The book is "A Brave Vessel: The True Tale of the Castaways Who Rescued Jamestown." It's good, but I'm having trouble taking it seriously whenever it references Shakespeare, saying he's the most celebrated and well-known man in England at the time when most scholars will tell you that he wasn't and that playwright Ben Jonson was. The guy also keeps going on about Shakespeare being a voracious reader with many books. Haha, sure. Keep telling people that.

Anyway, I picked it up mostly to see more things on Stephen Hopkins, but I can see I'll have to take this all with a grain of salt.

I hate books that make you have to do that. I get that bias is a thing, but when you are writing what is supposed to be a historiography, keep it to a damn minimum!

I just picked up "The Bands of Mourning" by Brandon Sanderson, the third book in the new Mistborn series. Saving it for the plane ride tomorrow.

I'm finally working on the Dark Tower series by Stephen King. It's good, but not quite what I expected, haha.

Read "Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything." It was a good.

I also read through the sixth volume of "Saga," and the 11th volume of "Chew," and the 30th volume of "Usagi Yojimbo."

I also read some of the Homeric Hymns. I bought a copy of them, but knowing me, owning a book means l'm less likely to read it while I try to work through the ones I have only for a few weeks from the library.

Speaking of which, picked up "Wiseguy: Life in a Mafia Family" again. I'd had to return it to the library when I was about halfway through, but now that I've gotten it back I'm trying to power through it.

I've realized that I seem to read a lot more non-fiction books than almost anything else (graphic novels are what I tend to read most) these days. Don't know why novels just aren't doing it for me.

Finished Michael Crichton's "Eaters of the Dead," which was pretty much just Beowulf retold.

Just started reading the "Lone Wolf and Cub" manga series after so many years of meaning to.

Have you read Jurassic Park? I always hear it's really good and quite different/darker than the movie.

I actually haven't. Been meaning to, but then decided it'd be a fun book to listen to in audio form with Bran, but there doesn't appear to be one for it.

I read Jurassic Park a long time ago. I thought it was really good! It's a lot more scientific and philosophical than the movie, but it's also a lot of fun.

Just... be aware, the exciting dinosaur-killing-people-part doesn't really start until about half-way through the book, which works for me, it just throws some people off a little bit.

Overall though, I'd highly recommend it.

Finally got a decent copy of The Iliad, The Odyssey, and The Aeneid so I am reading through those. Penguin Classic Deluxe edition... I am a bit sad that they are paperback, but they are nice copies despite that.

Reading "Born on Third Base: A One Percenter Makes the Case for Tackling Inequality, Bringing Wealth Home, and Committing to the Common Good" by Chuck Collins. He's a great-grandson of Oscar Mayer and gave away his fortune so that he could make his own way.

I'm about a third of the way through it, and I recommend it. It's less memoir than putting a lot of the economic issues we have in perspective. He argues for the super wealthy to put their money back into the system and pay their fair share of taxes, among other things.

Other than that, finished the first omnibus of "Lone Wolf and Cub."
