Remember the good ol' days with games that allowed you to take a bat and smack Mack, and Joe around all over the place? (just random names)

Games like Streets of Rage, Final Fight, Battletaods, man they rocked.

But what happened? I haven't seen a good beat em' up since the SNES / Genesis days.

Seriously, even if they kept the same overhead and graphical format from old beat em' up games, I'd still dish out money for them.

Well, anyone else miss these kinds of games?

Oh! I just remembered that I had the Battletoads for the SNES. =/

Those games were great, and were really fun to play. Pounding hordes of enemies never got boring (especially if you can turn your foot into a blade ). But yeah, I've noticed there haven't been any games like that for a while...there have been some beat em' up games, but not that classic style of beat em' up games.

They were insanely fun with friends too, and I remember always being the best of the group, so I really never had to give up my controller.

I think what happened is most of the gaming industry moved on to using guns, and making "shoot em ups", which you just don't get the same kind of feeling from. Super Smash Bros. Melee in adventure mode is the closest modern game where you can kick and punch your way across levels. Heh, I just remembered The Simsons arcade game, both hilarious and a great classic beat em up.

Streets of rage is one of my favorite games of all time.

I remeber in the first one you could be some white guy, a black guy, or some vixen lady. XD

But i think games just got more complex and people are starting to hate repativie(sp) gameplay more and more, but i dont see a problem with it .

I would definately like to see more of these kind of games I loved the Streets of Rage Games, old TMNT games, and Battletoads. Only game that I can think of are like the old beat em up's are the new TMNT games there not bad my friend rented one of em and we played for about 3 hours but it doesn't even compare to the old beat em up style of games.

The last beat em up I saw and remember was Fighting Force for PSX, the game sadly was on the easy side, unlike Final Fight or a number of old beat em ups which required skill to complete.

Hell even fighting games aren't as big as they used to be, sure they are still around, but nearly as huge as they once were.

Yeah, the 2D fighters are especially dying out.

But there are some serious hardcore fans out there.

I've never really been to big on fighters of any kind, the only series I've really ever enjoyed a lot were; Street Fighter, Killer Instinct, and Tekken, other than that fighting games just kind of bore me.

But beat em' ups were just really fun, and great at the arcades. I just wish they were still around.

If I end up making games for a career, I'll bring back the genre! (laughs)

Final Fight 2! God that game had such a terrible story, and the bad guys had such bad names but thats what made it great! It was like "YO MAYOR. I stole your daugther. DESTROY THE CRIMES!" "WHAT? Hagar's daughter is in trouble?! Better stop taking my shower and fight numerous men named Two-P and Bred!" The opening sequence to that game ruled so hard. The music wasn't bad either. It was generic SNES eighties music. This game has much more fond memories than Bad-Dudes did...

Yeah, well I never enjoyed Final Fight 2 and 3 as much as the original. (The original Arcade edition was my favorite, since it had Guy)

Those games got pretty hard though, one body slam and you'd lose like 70% of your health.

Final Fight? 1, 2, or 3?

Can't say I remember that. I do rememeber that the Arcade version had semi-what revealing girls in it though, compared to the SNES / GBA port.

Abigail is the Park boss from Final Fight 1, he's cheap as hell, and when he gets pissed he charges at you lightning fast. I particularly hate him no matter what system.

Final Fight 1 is also available for Sega CD, as Final Fight CD, and on X68000.

I never really played these kinds of games... I'm also curious, was Double Dragon for the NES one of these games?

Yes, Double Dragon was really probably the first Beat em' Up's back in the day, for the NES.

Serisouly I dont think any game can beat streets of rage and I think Xeo can back me up on this. It just has a certain feel to it that none of the other beat em up's even have.

Me and Xeo played Final Fight and we didn't think it was nearly as good as the Streets of Rage games, but Battletoads for the NES does come really close only thing is that is the hardest game ever!@!!!

Yeah, I just really like Streets of Rage a lot more than Final Fight, because it seems way more fast paced. More enemies on the screen, your characters are "smaller" so you have more room to move around in (Shinobi and I kept on smacking eachother around ), but yeah, Streets of Rage is my favorite beat em' up series.

It's harder to get used to 1 and 2 though, since you can't run.

Oh the final fight series I loved to death! I loved beating up thugs for the hell of it. I wish they would make another one though when cody breaks out of prison and fights thugs to claim his innocence.

Oh, and let's not forget about River City Ransom, which was such an awesome game, Mega 64 made a Jackass out of it. If you'll recall, it had the "Merv's Burger Joint", and the enemies that said "BARF!!" when they died.

Joe and Mac is an acctual beat 'em up style of game. Its a game where theres two cave men, and you get to run around levels with clubs, or other ancient weapons (Like a stone wheel) and knock the crap out of enemies.

Its an old snes side scroller game, its also two players. Addicting as hell, just very short.

Anyone whos played it loves it, lol.
