I seriously have felt like asking for some time, especially since the radio stations have played nothing but their stuff off "American Idiot" (they're supposedly "good" stuff).

Seriously, I personally think this meld into the same old emo/damn-the-media-we're-intelligent-because-we-call-you-all-stupid genre that all the other major punk bands have been doing is ridiculous. I mean it's all become a matter of let's-all-be-angsty-about-shit rather than fuck-you-authority.

I mean, Green Day was part of a punk chain that followed Ramones and came before Blink 182, and the stations seem to have forgotten "Good Riddance", "Minority" and pretty much anything that came before "International Superhits."

Sorry to all of you that "just discovered" this "new sound" or otherwise have played it on a loop for however amount of time because you just couldn't get enough of that idiot song, but I would much prefer Billy Joe and the boys if they went back to their "old shit."

I've never really cared, I just listen to whatever song I like and American Idiot is a song I like. But the punk bands are, I don't know, changing into these people who don't care about authority and say what they want, it's weird. I don't usually listen to the words they say, the lyrics and that. If the song is catchy then hey I will listen to it.

I agree, I hate that new cd compared to any old greenday, I mean i'm kinda proud that they tried something new, but its just not them so they should go back punk roots and not conformed into this emo/ pop punk era, and their songs were to openly political on the new CD to, I just didnt like it.

**shrugs** I, for one, just listen to music as it is, and if I like it, I like it, and if I don't, I don't...so I could care less what kinda genre they're all turning into...they're all suparstars with a lot of money and could give two shits of what I thought, so life goes on. So I don't really hold anything like that against musicians or anything. I just take what I'm hearing and decide if I like it. I like their new stuff. I like their old stuff. I like the stuff that came out in between. Green Day just happens to be one of those bands that I just say I like, cuz I ike the majority of their music anyway

Reminds me of No Doubt when they started drifting from punk toward almost hip-hop. Then Gwen peeled off into her own solo career which further came out pop/hip-hop.

Is there really no more truly punk?

Every band I've seen lately that was claiming to be punk has either been way too angsty (relationships, how life sucks, etc) and thus sounding more alternative rock or pop...

...or otherwise they sound fresh from the garage with no real message other than to try and make a name for themselves, which probably won't happen because they spend more time trying to get people to just listen to them or make too many ridiculous sounds into the mic.

Anyway by the way, Katana, you do have a point, but there are some that like to be choosy about what they listen to. I, myself, usually don't care, but this "Green Day being cool 'cause they're sound is 'fresh'" phenomena is pretty sad.

I'm so glad there are some that agree.

i agree with katana, you shouldn't compare or redicule bands because they choose to drift away from themselves, otherwise people would then complain about how they're always singing the same things. you try new things and people complain, you dont try new things and they complain, people will always complain no matter what you do. and plus, why talk about american idiot the song, which sucks because it's so short, and not boulevard of broken dreams, which is a really kewl song. and maybe, the "old" green day grew up, who knows. people change, and you shouldn't always rate them based on how you like them, because they're REAL people, and people do w/e the hell they want.

I like all their stuff. Their old stuff definitely rocks, but they're new stuff is good too. Some people i know don't like Green Day because they were expecting their new CD to be earth-shattering or something like that. I think they know that people miss their old stuff, so they're probably going to try to mix it now. But if they don't, I really don't care. Green Day rocks, yeah, but they're not one of my favorite bands. So they can do what they want.

From what I've heard, Punk 10 years ago is entirely different from what it basically "is" in today's standards.

Crap, I'd say.

But that's me, I'm living in the 70's-early 90's music wise. I can't stand -anything- today, except for maybe a band or two like Audioslave, that's all I can think of though, and I'd much rather listen to older stuff.

Anywho, I agree that Punk bands nowadays...well...suck. Green Day ain't too bad, but it seems they have fallen into the ways of those "others".

Ah well. Old stuff can still be listened too, at least,

The deal is drifting from a genre (punk, in this matter) alienates your fanbase.

I agree with everyone since this post who have said that punk these days does indeed suck, because as Gren Day is doing now they've gone from defiance to angst.

I mean seriously, old Green Day fans have learned to hate them, while all of these new fans are ushered in to this "new sound."

Emo's dead, but apparently punk wants to keep it alive by morphing into it.

It's like pop with hip-hop these days. Since the death of the major boy bands, pop lost much of its definition, but the radio stations have since "re-defined" it.

Simply put the radio stations play what they want you to hear and I was more than SURPRISED to hear from Zoso that one station played "welcome to Paradise", one of their old songs that it seems everyone has forgotten.

All right, fine. Have it your way, though. Let's not judge. They're "matured"... *rolls eyes*

Edit: Bad Religion does rock. I especially like "21st Century Digital Boy".. but wait, saying I like them is judging. Oops...

Well, I gotta agree that this whole "new sound" shit is sickening. I mean, the new "fans" are mostly posers who just like what is currently popular.

I will be honest, I love Green Day, old and new, Boulevard of Broken Dreams is a really good song and I am not ashamed to admit it. American Idiot was good for awhile, but the radio played it way too much... otherwise, I say give me Good Riddance and I will be a happy camper. As long as they don't go totally pop or try to rap I will be fine. Sure, the Emo thing is a bit... well... disturbing, but it'll pass.

As for the Bad Religion comment: *bows in worship* All hail Bad Religion!

Yes, Boulevard is a decent song, but to me it's just not Green Day.

Just to put it into a bit more perspective for you, Elara, it would be like if Manson suddenly grew into doing trance rock or sounded more like Evanescence or something and dumped all of the dark, goth rock. So then he gains this entirely new fanbase comprised of kids. As a loyal fan wouldn't you too feel almost betrayed?

Yeah, I get that reference. I would feel betrayed in a sense, but I would probably still listen to it, since I do like Evanescense as well, but I get what you mean by the "it's just not them" kinda of meaning. Although I don't think that what Green Day has done is that radical of a change.

*hugs her Manson CDs for reassurance that he is metal and good*

hmmm. I doubt Mansen could change if he was magically transformed into a three year old catholic girl...

Well, the Zep, and Beatles can't change. because the band was broken up by the untimely deaths of their members.

I don't liek that expression. Since when is a death 'timely' Does someone go to sleep at night before they die and think, "I am completely satisfied with my life accomplishments, I am completely ready for death."

Im not ashamed to say i like green day. But the old green day was better. I tried to keep an open mind when they came out with the new album. And i actually liked it. But i guess everyone has their own opinion about the music.
