Okay, I have a small problem. I can never understnad any 1337 speak, simply because nobody explains it, but many people on AIM, games, etc use it.

Could anybody provide a working translation for me, and please put all the abbreviations in there. Espicially XD, which almost everyone uses.

an easy way to learn 1337 is to go to gphan.com although it is a VERY basic alphabet and im not sure if it is real or not. I know a bit though:

J00 - You
1337 - leet
hax0rz - I think this means hack
Thar - There
n00b - Newbie
OMG - Oh my god (apparently this is supposed to be 1337 speak)
5h17 - Shit

And some simple sentences -

OMFG LOLZ U IZ 0WNED HAHAHA!!! - I killed you (something I once saw on UT2004)

1337 is no longer real. It's original purpose was to serve as a secret language between the early hackers to confuse the government because it looks like random gibberish being emitted by computers. After the Hackers movie popularized hackers (despite its horrible inaccuracies), 1337 took ahold of the general populace taking the language into the mainstream...much like other secret codes from years before...turning the language into a mockery losing all of its coolness among the hackers of old.

So, you'd have to figure out how pissed off it makes me that I no longer have the linguistic capacities to communicate without encryption protocols. You'll often find that the real hackers don't use 1337 speak anymore. Only posers and kids whom feel that it makes them superior to confuse people online. You'll often find no respect from people online if you're using 1337 speak.

And, it's not really all that hard. I can read and write it in a number of different methods, but choose not to anymore. Defeats its original intended purpose. Just try to decipher the symbols into letters of the English language, and read them across. It's almost like learning to read English all over again.

Ok, 1337 speak, or 'leet' speak. Is usually used by the very unelite.

I don't think they do the entire alphabet, they usually use:

1337--elite
sp34k--speak
Pwn3d--Pawned, a computor way of saying "You got Served"
Hax0r--Hacker
r0x0r--Rock, rocking, a way to say awesome in geek.

I is usually replaced by 1's, E is usually replaced by 3's, and O is usally replaced by 0.

7 is a T

And the true objective of 1337 sp34k is to confuse and annoy people, so most of Kaijin's list would be innacurate due to the fact that the characters or cobinations of characters actually look like the letters they are supposed to represent.

My point exactly, usually, if someone is using leet speak, it's best not to know what they're talking about...it cuts down on the urge to kill thing and such. Unless, you'd like to be a lamer, then I have no problem with that.

That's why I don't touch AO-Hell with a million foot digital galvanized pole. 1337 speak is dead. It's been commercialized and adopted by teeny-boppers and script kiddies. It's totally useless, and serves as the sign declaring "I am an idiot".

I recently received an email with the word, "pwn3d", in it, and that was it. To which I replied, "Your point being?" Obviously nothing had happened, and it was web based email, but why send me that?

And, if you remember my hacking classes back in the day, I made referrence to leet and its presence on the wikipedia.

leet makes online games hilarious! but seriously, i would laugh at somebody who regularly uses at least 4 of these 'words'. People actually have designated buttons for OMFG, LOL, and R0X0r occasionally in games like Counterstrike (WoW doesn't like it at all). Almost every person types in a different "dialect" (sp?) though, so don't worry at all if it's too confusing and just tell them to use the keyboard like the're supposed to.

"OMFG", "LOL", "ROFL", and such aren't really considered leet speek, but rather AOL Speak since they were developed through chatrooms on AOL. 1337 sp33k |_|535 +|-|3 k3y|304r|) (|-|4r4(+3r5 4L|/|05+ 3||+1r31y, with different characters and variations of those characters as used by the respective script kiddie, hacker, or elite hacker. Mostly posers and script kiddies now, though.
