Post thing you don't like here, whether you heard about it or not, about video games. For example:
- Bad Translation. Seriously, half of us may not like bad translation. I just know they are going to call Japanese Mamkute in Fire Emblem 8, Manakete. Cormag is horrible too... Plus, some translation may not even get you the "actual" characteristic of the storyline. - Different Game, different Story. Honestly, I hate this the most. We all know Final Fantasy 6 was actually 3 in Japan. Most of us doesn't even know which one is which and basically everything become screwed. Like: Tales of Destiny 2 -> Tales of Eternia. Fire Emblem Blazing Sword -> Fire Emblem - Game we heard, but never imported. I honeslty going to say this: I HATE YOU! I JUST HATE YOU! GIVE US ALL OF THOSE GOOD GAME AND LET BE HAPPY! I mean, come on... Japanese get all of the fun and we have 1/10 of it. Tell me video gamers. What do you hate about how we get our games? It mess up, the characters was too stupid, or the game mess up in a certain plot? Tell it here... because I was getting sick of how our translation mess up our current game. |

I can't really gripe on the translations because I don't know what they're really supposed to say.
My one pet peeve though, is that Japan gets EVERYTHING with or in their games. Not only do they get neat action figures, but special costumes, extra level, more difficulties, and more characters. Another thing is the random censorships we have. But those aren't that abundant anymore. |

Shuyin, some translation are really nasty. It make you think what they are and what Japanese actually mean. For instance, in Fire Emblem:
Eliwood, in the final chapter, think he can fight Nergal by himself. In Japanese, he ask everyone to help him. Lyn was suppose to be a little different. She was kinda like country folk but she act noble as our Lyn act a little different like she was too dependent on people. And I hates those censorships... Most people curses anyway... |

Some translations are so bad they're hilarious. This sucks when the game's trying to be serious, though...
Glitchfest! Yay! =/ There are games that no matter how much I love them, they are unfortunately horrendously buggy. Morrowind's False Floors come to mind... falling, falling, falling forever... Framerate problems. I'm sorry, but lightsaber battles aren't very entertaining when you can see the skipping frames. Force Lightning isn't as impressive when it's all choppy and shit. KotOR 2 had problems here, if you couldn't guess... So, while neither of those have ANYTHING to do with the translation, they're complaints I have. Here's another... Wait, but that said you said... - I usually have subtitles on in cutscenes, even when the dialogue is in English. And when the dialogue is in English, the subtitles sometimes say something COMPLETELY different from what is being spoken. This can be a translation thing, but wasn't KotOR 2 first released in English..? |

Well, Tamarin I never played Kotor 2 but in most games, some english translation tend to get off but still mean the same thing. Kinda like (althrough not a perfect example.) :
"I lost my eggrolls." "Hey, where did my eggrolls go?" It pretty much give a closer connection. That or our translator can't translate our language. Also, when you play some video game like Megaman, don't you hate how they change names to a "better" verison? Like: Rockman -> Megaman Aquaman -> Bubbleman Fireman -> Touchman See how it isn't really accurate in our language? We can tell which one is the real name, but in translation, they edit alot of stuff out to give us something not accurately true. I still hate it through. Plus, games like ToP and TOD2 are not going to be release althrough they were goods games too... |

There is one other complaint I have. Completely unrelated to translations, but it's a complaint dammit!
I've noticed in many recent games that the outfits of the female characters are gradually shrinking. Come on, people, it's possible to have an attractive female character without making her about as much as the average person wears in the shower. (slight exaggeration) |

Perhaps that was because we already had a Yamatoman? I think it was in Megaman 6.

Noel make thing sound better.) -- Ewan (It sound good, Yuan would be better) - Megaman Series -- Too much so I am not going to say anything - Fantasy Final 3/6 -- Phoenix Down? Would be nice to see Fenix Down. You see what I mean? There are several bad translation that completely either make it sound for better or alot whole lot worse. Even they edit out cursing language too, *sob* I hate them! I say we want unedit verison translation. |

Tamarin: I don't mind the shrinking clothes ...
But yeah, and the female 'vixen' like ads in magazines really get on my nerves. Don't get me wrong, you all know well I'm a fan of that ... kind of stuff, but when it comes to videogames, I want videogames. And yeah, Yamato Man was in Megaman 6. The worst name was Duff McWhallen in Megaman X5, or Axl Rose (No I'm not joking, I think there was another one from Gun's n' Roses also ...) |

Originally posted by Beowulf Cor LeonisPhoenix is the correct spelling, Beo. That, or I'm misunderstanding your post. . . Xeo: hey, I like women too, but when I see one wearing next to nothing the first thing that comes to mind is 'slut'. What I find more surprising is that I got Yamato Man's location correct. Playing six NES Megaman games makes the robots all blur together after a bit. =/ |

Tamarin, it is actually Fenix because Shaddow show me Final Fantasy 3 ROM and well, it is actually FenixDown in Japanese language, while Phoenix and Fenix SOUND and rhyme together, you can actually mistaken for one another.
Remember, Final Fantasy 3 is Final Fantasy 6 in United State. So they could mistaken few translation and still change the way around... Like Ewan and Yuan. If you pronounce it correctly, you got "Ew-and" and "Yu-and" which both ryhme in the end. So when you say Fenix Down, it does sound VERY much like to Phoenix Down. Translation can STILL be horrible when few pronouncation can alter the name. |

No, you misunderstand. THe correct spelling of the mythological creature is Phoenix. I know what I'm talking about here, Beo.

Originally posted by Tamarin Calanis I know that. But we also already had an Elecman, from both MM1 and MMBN1. Along with Gutsman, Iceman, Cutman, Darkman, Freezeman, Shadowman, Pharoahman - all in MMBN. I was just saying they could've just kept it Yamato instead of making the ever so lame Japan. And Xeo, I think all of the bosses names from the American version of MMX5 had some relation to Guns and Roses. Iggy Glow, was named after, well, some other affiliated guy of Guns and Roses, also named Iggy. =/ |

Tamarin, you don't get it, do you?
Look, translation of either FENIX or PHOENIX down is correct anyway. The translator thought PHOENIX would be more accurate way of saying it because another Phoenix revive when its flame is gone. However, when the Japanese game might have say Fenix Down, most translation couldn't think what Fenix (or what it is) really do. But also, it can be pronounced as either Fenix or Phoenix because the first syllable sounds the same. (Say it out loud if you don't have a clue.) Think that as this way. Take my Ewan and Yuan as an example. They BOTH sound pretty much the same but in Fire Emblem 8, they are going to call Yuan Ewan. Why? Because the last syllable is pronounced the same and the first syllable can be pronounced differently. Just say it and you notice that the name does have similar sound to it. Just the Yu and Ew is changed but close in pronunciation. Now see that Fenix Down was similar to Phoenix Down. Why? Because the Phoe is very weak and the Fe is also weak, you can hear that they sound the same. Nix is very strong in the end so you can actually say it either way. Remember, some translation can results in different wording so if I might say Lin in Japanese, they might edit that to Lyn, or if I say Noel, they could say Cole or Knoll. You can tell the different but they really sound the same. |

It's not that big of a deal, Beowulf and Tamarin.
I own the SNES version of Final Fantasy III (the real thing), and yes it has some slight name changes, and it is "Fenix Down" in that game. But they changed it. In Anthology, it's "Phoenix Down" and in most of the other Final Fantasy's, it's "Phoenix". Regardless, I've heard the true text in Final Fantasy VI (japanese version) is very different from the US version, there's more humor (sexual stuff from what I've heard), cursing and stuff like that. So, I guess you could say that's another thing I hate, a drastic change in translations from the original thing. =/ |

Hey, I know it's not a big deal. But when you misspell such a well-known (and, in the series, frequently referenced) mythological creature, well... it tends to be noticeable. That, and I like arguing with people.
Beo, for the reasons of mythological creatures and the fact that it's so often mentioned in the FInal Fantasy games, Phoenix cannot be reasonably compared to a single character name that probably doesn't appear in any more than one game. (Last edited by Tamarin Calanis on 05-04-05 09:25 PM) |

It was probably name space issues. Seems most logical to me. Still a half-assed excuse, though; they could've just made a new item instead of recycling the same old thing. =/ |
