Three men arrive for a business trip to New York, and check into a hotel. They find out the room costs $30 for the night. They split the cost and each pay $10. The hotel attendant hands them a set of keys, and the men retire to their room.
Later that night, the hotel manager goes over the books and notices that the hotel attendant overcharged the three men by $5. He hands the hotel attendant five $1 bills, and sends the attendant to return the money to the three men. On the way up to the room, the attendant realizes that he can't evenly break up five $1 bills between three men, so he pockets $2. He returns the other $3 dollars, one dollar to each man. Since the men each received a dollar back, then they really paid $27 (3 X $9) for the room. Adding the $2 that the attendant kept, the total spent amounts to $29. Where did the extra dollar go? |

I've spent too long thinking of how to explain this one for so long that I'll just make a simple statement: don't think about the men paying only $9 each. That should make a little bit of sense.

I've heard this one before, but I can never remember the answer or how to explain it. It'll frustrate me if I think too long, lol.

I Think there never was an extra dollar.
If you think the other way (not the 3 x $9), you would get that the room cost $25. The attendant keeps $2 of the overpaid money, and $3 are given to the three men. Also, they really paid $27. However, they kept $3 of of the $30 dollar. I don't see why the $2 the attendant kept was added after, since it's $25 (room) + $2 (Attendant) = $27 (price paid) + $3 (money returned) = $30 (paid at first)

Good show, Dark Slaya. Couldn't have explained it better myself.
This question is often posed on applications for game tester positions. The purpose of the question is to look for people that can find answers by thinking outside of the box. If you concentrate on what is given, you'll never find the answer and the extra dollar will always haunt you. The truth is, there is no extra dollar. As explained by DarkSlaya, you need to view the problem from the perspective explained. Therefore, the extra dollar never existed. It was just something I had to share since one of the guys at work was getting so worked up over it. Our Executive Producer came out of his office and screamed out, "Are you high?!" Then, he pulled out one of those giant post-it note thingies, and drew out an explanation similar to that of the one DarkSlaya posted. After that, we confirmed that our dear coworker is a certified idiot...and often wonder why he was hired. |

Lmao, that's funny. I can think outside the box only half the time. It's weird. anyway, Good show. You should have a "Think Outside the Box" thread started for all of us to play. |
