I beat it. Simply put, I freaking beat Thunder Force IV (I own it for the Genesis now, under the Lightening Force name though).

By far one of the best experiences in my life, ever.

I've owned Thunder Force IV for nearly 2 months now, and almost daily I've been playing it and trying to beat it. First, I was stuck at level 7 for who knows how long, since that stage provides a high level of difficulty since there's 4 minibosses, and then an annoying final boss.

Then I got to level 8 recently. It wasn't all that tough, until I got to the boss, that has about 4 stages to take him completely down (stages like, first blow up these cannons, then his arms, etc).

Then finally level 9 a few days ago, but I ended up dying right off the bat with the intro to the level, which simply starts off with a boss you meet from level 5.

Then yesterday, I defeated that boss only to learn it was only the first boss of that level. You then fight this insanely crazy final boss that takes up 80% of the screen, shoots beams that bounce off the walls of the game, and eventually shoots about 20 (not exagerated) balls at you that cover the entire screen, has a good deal of stages to take down, and so on..

How I beat that boss last night, I have no idea.

I did so well last night it was incredible, getting to level 8 without losing a continue. My fnal score at the end of the game (in total) was 2302180.

By far, a videogame accomplishment to remember for myself.

Thunder Force IV is quite simply put, one of the best shooters out there, if not, the best. Even though after the first 4 levels, the difficulty drastically goes up, it's still a fun game. The character and enemy designs are so impressive it's stuff you wouldn't expect to see on only a 16 bit system. I don't even know where to begin with the music, this game by far has the best music I have ever heard on the Genesis. Think of industrial metal, and you've got the music here. The gameplay is fun, innovative, the weapons are great, and everything. And if you ever manage to beat this masterpeice, you'll feel a great level of accomplishment.

By far one of my favorite games out there.

I also loved Thunder Force AC (Thunder Spirits, AKA 3 for the SNES or Genesis) to death. This series is definitely pretty underated, and it really SHOULD be mentioned among other great and better known shooter series such as R-Type, and Gradius in my opinion.

Definitely check these games out if you're looking for some good old school shooting action, and high difficulty, but with satifying results.

The next thing for you to do is try and 1CC (1 credit clear, no continues used) or 1 life it, though I don't think I've met anyone who has (yet I meet people who 1 CC DonPachi and DoDonPachi all the time, DP, and DDP are shooters made by Cave, one of the best in the shmup biz).

I actually barely beat it last night again without using continues.

But, I ended up killing myself on purpose.

I was at level 7, which like I said before, is the level with a total of 5 bosses. The final one being nearly impossible to beat without getting hit when you don't have any powerups. But, in the level there's a part right before the final boss with a Life, in a "hole" in the level, also with hidden powers: Sheild, Wing (upgraded main weapon, really effective), and Claw (the two ball things that spin around you, blocking beams and also shooting lasers / stuff out of them.

But, I had no lives, and I figured there was pretty much no way I could attempt the main boss of that stage with the regular double laser gun, and no lives. To get that Life in the "hole" and the other powerups, I would have had to sacrifice a life, which I just didn't have. So I gave up and killed myself to start the level over with lives.

So, yeah, I guess you could say I wouldn't have beaten it without using continue's, but I've gotten much better.

It's just one of those games where you really have to get to know the levels, and know where the powerups are. I highly doupt anyone could blast through the game and beat it in their first time playing the game.

I've heard of the Pachi games. What were they for?

DonPachi and DodonPachi are arcade, PSX Japan, and Saturn Japan only, so MAME is your best bet (burned the PSX versions myself as well) there are 4 games in the DDP series, another recently got added to MAME but isn't working correctly just yet.

Very manic Cave shooter, lots of bullets flying around a a chaining system.

Bumpity bump (ok no bump then), here's how 1 CCing and 1-lifing games is done, there are shmups and some platformers here, all cleared in 1 life, some in a couple.

It turns out by pressing A+Start at the start of ThunderForce IV, you can get into the options menu.

There, I saw:
"Difficulty | Normal"

Damn. I only beat it on normal.

Normal mode eh, not too shabby, but now you have to tune the difficulty up a bit more.

Speaking of Genesis games, I just bought Ghouls N Ghosts Genesis off of Ebay, now that's a game even on the easiest setting will test your manhood, even though the Genesis version has more checkpoints per level (and a built in invincibility cheat).

Ugh, I remember I couldn't get past level 2 I think, with those bouncing enemies. Yeah, that was definitely the hardest Ghouls N' Ghosts game.

Super GnG to me seemed much tougher, but the first game in the series, Ghosts N Goblins takes the difficulty cake, I play it now and again on Capcom Classics Collection (along with Ghouls and Super Ghouls on the same disc) and regularly get my ass handed to me, I have yet to defeat the first quest (after quite a few continues I'm usually on the second to last stage), but I did beat the first quest on Ghouls.
