Lake senior faces felony charge
Thursday, January 5, 2006
BY Edd Pritchard REPOSITORY STAFF WRITER

LAKE TWP. - Asking folks in an Internet chat room to help crash his high school’s computer was a joke to one student.

School officials and Canton City Prosecutor Frank Forchione didn’t think it was funny.

On Wednesday morning, Forchione filed a felony criminal charge of disrupting public services against Michael W. Stone, 18, of 13634 Mogadore Ave. NW. Uniontown police arrested the Lake High School senior at the school.

“Michael said it was a joke,” Forchione said. “We showed him how we deal with this kind of joke.”

The incident occurred Dec. 2. Using a school computer, Stone created a blog on a Web site that encouraged others to use a link to another site. Once at the second site, Stone told users to “hold down F5 to help crash my school server,” according to police reports.

Forchione said school officials noticed that Lake High’s computer system was slowing down and called a technician who discovered the problem and its source.

School officials contacted Uniontown police, who investigated the case and turned over information to Forchione’s office.

Forchione said he filed charges because students need to know that officials will be aggressive when dealing with computer crime.

It’s not the first time local officials have investigated situations where students are misusing computers. Forchione noted a 2005 case in which four Jackson High School students were charged with misdemeanors after being caught accessing the school computer system. Some grades were changed.

There have been other incidents where officials couldn’t catch the person responsible for the computer crime, Forchione said.

“This new technology has created a whole wave of crimes, and we’re just trying to find ways to solve them,” Forchione said.

Lake Local School District officials acknowledged the incident, but said they couldn’t comment on charges filed against Stone.

Police took Stone to the Stark County Jail.

Wow...I should tell my cousin this because hes trying the same thing at his school...O.o;;;

But the guy was sent to jail on the whole manner? What a load of bullshit, they should have just gotten rid of his internet privalages...or maybe the story goes deeper, he may have possiably been a trouble maker or something and was known for doing things like that.

Hopefully it might just be illegal in that state, I need it so that way I can check up on things with my clan boards

If you screw around with my school's computer system and it isn't anything major like changing grades and such the IT people will actually say "Good Job" and tell you to not do it again.

Its the digital age, everyone is trying to leave their mark in the digital world nowadays because its forever...If you leave your mark phycially, it can just get painted over or cleaned up...with the right kind of hacking you can leave your mark and no one can do anything about it...

Catch the digital wave, its taking us over by storm

I don't know about the digital world, but I sure as hell left my mark in a one of Quebec's public bathrooms.

On another note, I had always thought that crackers and hackers did not want to leave their marks because that way you can be linked to other crimes...

Well for the district I work for they dont like people doing it because we have spent an immense amount of time setting everything up, especially a lot of money, I think our district is worth well over $200,000 bucks, probobly more considering we got a shite load of brand new dell computers (around 200) to set up on spring break, So yea, The servers are all new dell servers also.

If someone hacks then it cost's us mony to fix it, and we dont like doing that.

Our school has cheap-O IBM computers that are claimed to be bought by Bill Gates...Yeah right...

Half the time they break down from the shoddy DSL we have on each computers ( Why dont they act smart and use T1...oh wait, theyre dumbasses when it comes to computers...no wonder im all the time fixing them )

But yeah...if your servers run on shitty computers...theyre just ASKING to get their servers fucked up

That is true, that's why we use T-1 internet, The only problom is that IMC(not sure what it stands for) can regulate on how much bandwidth we can have and such, One of my co-workers tried to download a Microsoft office update the other day and it toolk over an hour, On fricken T-1 now that's bs.

We used to have really shitty custom built pc's all over the district, 98's and 95's. there's still some of them out there. but everything's mostly XP now. I think we get about 4 computers in a week that need to be repaired (part replaced or something) or it just needs to be reghosted, so yea, it sucks sometimes
