Man Kills Teen for Walking on Lawn, Police Say

BATAVIA, Ohio (March 20) - A man who neighbors say was devoted to his meticulously kept lawn was charged with murder in the shooting of a 15-year-old boy who apparently walked across his yard.Charles Martin called 911 on Sunday afternoon, saying calmly: "I just killed a kid."

Police, who released the call's contents, said Martin also told the dispatcher: "I've been harassed by him and his parents for five years. Today just blew it up."

Larry Mugrage, whose family lived next door, was shot in the chest with a shotgun. The high school freshman was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Martin, 66, allegedly told police he had several times had problems with neighbors walking on his lawn. He remained jailed without bond Monday. His jailers said no attorney was listed for him.

Neighbors said Martin lived alone quietly, often sitting in front of his one-story home with its neat lawn, well-trimmed shrubbery and flag pole with U.S. and Navy flags flying.

Joanne Ritchie, 46, said Mugrage was known as "a good kid," but she always also considered Martin to be friendly.

Union Township is near Batavia, about 20 miles east of Cincinnati.

I can understand the idea of threatening the person with a gun, but actually fireing it is utterly stupid, it baffles me that there are people like this guy out there.

And of course hes an old man...You can tell from the article that obviously the old man had people messing with his lawn...

My old Next door neibghor used to scream at my relatives all the time for being 1 inch in his property...No one cared though...He moved away thank God

I had a neighbor like that...he was a creep, he used to come out and watch my brother and I playing in the kiddie pool with his siblings...*he wasn't really my brother but we are better than best friends so this applies*

Anyway, it was creepy...

Oh, the kid is always a straight A's student or "an upstanding youngster in the community" or some sort of volunteer in the convalescent hospital or something like that. It makes it sound all the more dramatic if a completely innocent-sounding kid is knocked off.

If it were written that he really was harassing this old man, who is painted to look senile and crazy, or was just some punk kid failing school and probably going to end up in prison anyway, it wouldn't be such a tragedy.

That is not cool. That kid had so much to live for and now he is dead and can't live which sucks. I'll be more carefull when I cut through my neighbors lawn from now on.
