So, I'm about to graduate High School, and with my open house coming up soon I'm hoping to get at least some $$$, and thinking about investing a lot into a computer.
So I thought about it: Laptop : - Going to college next year, I think one would be pretty useful to have. A laptop could easily be carried around, and used at school, and whatnot. -> What kind of laptop would you guys recommend? From what I've seen, HP seems to have the best stuff out there for what you pay for. My friend just got one, with a 17' screen, 1024 DDR Ram, 100GB Hardrive, 64mb processer, and other stuff (can't remember exactly), for around $1,000. And for a laptop, I really think that's a pretty impressive deal. I've considered buying the same thing he did. Cons: Not easily upgradable. Desktop : - A desktop would be more suitable for gaming, and just universaly doing a lot of things. If I got a desktop instead, I'd probably put forth quite a bit of money, enough to be around top quality of what you can get today. -> I'm a little clueless as to whats good for a desktop out there, and where to buy stuff. If I got a desktop, I really don't think I'd buy some pre-packaged computer, I'd probably buy all custom parts and build something together from scratch. And I would seriously want it to be a pure powerhouse, and I probably have the money for it. $1,000 in my opinion would not be even close to how good of a computer I'd like to have (alright maybe that's exagerating, but seriously ...). Only con I see with a desktop is, it wouldn't be possible to carry around from place to place. ------------------------------------ So, going into college what do you guys think would be more useful? And for those knowledgeable, what kind of computers / components should I consider getting? Really a broad question, but hopefully some people here can help me out. Edit: What I'd like to be doing on a computer: - Simply, everything almost. I'd like to have a computer, to use it for everything. - Web design, animation, movies, music, gaming. Really there's nothing in particular that I'm focusing on, other than the fact I just simply want a good computer to ... just have a computer. Edit #2: And honestly, I'd rather go with a PC, not a Mac. Just a preference. In the future I'd love to have a Mac, but not as my first computer. (Last edited by Xeo on 05-02-06 01:04 AM) |

If you don't have all the knowledge yourself to build a rig yourself, get a friend or business to do it for you. You'll save an assload of cash. And don't underestimate a good monitor, I always cringe when I see someone buying a cheap LCD..
I'll post again later when things aren't so stressful at my house. |

You really dont need a laptop...unless your like on buisness trips and such on the manner...plus its a proven fact that Laptops give you testicular tortions...
The only thing you need in class is your brain, A recorder to record lectures, pen and paper, and other necessary supplies the instructor asks of you...A laptop wouldent help you in any way in my opinion... Plus a Desktop computer is easier to upgrade...it dosent take a bit of knowledge to learn to build your own compy...Hell I built mine for 200$ and its hella Kickass...though Im saving up 2000$ this summer to build me one I dont have to upgrade in the next 5 years or something But if you really REALLY want a laptop...go with Sony and Dual Rendering processors...Dont get a gaming one...oh please dont... But if you want a gaming computer thats already built, look up Fragboxes on Google...those things are super-small and cost about 800 bucks...I use one when I play WoW on Weekends...and they make great traveling comuputers... |

If there are a bunch of computer labs or places you can use computers around campus then there is no need to have a laptop unless you want complete mobility. Though if you're looking for obviously a gaming rig or something that you plan on upgrading go for a desktop.
I personally would be a heavy duty desktop and a cheap laptop if both were absolutly necessary. Check to see if your campus has computer labs and if they have a ton of computers than just get a desktop. |
