Part of the Paradox Island Series

Prologue

Fifty-two thousand feet above the fruitful plains where pollen and leaves played among the tall weeds, and birds circled and soared a few feet above the ground, a water droplet begins its journey towards the warm ground below. The beginning of a storm not to be felt, not to be seen, not to exist, but for this droplet the beginning of an adventure through the clear skies before its termination somewhere on or above the ground below. The dark rain cloud releasing its heavy contents towards the quiet field below; the quiet field awaiting the pummeling of the ensuing rain. But, two miles above the cloud, unseen by all below, glides a rocky structure awaiting its impact with the field.
Three days before, he waited in the same field, telescope and laptop in hand, for his partner to pull up in her minivan. The minivan slid down the dusty trail, rock music blaring through open windows, and passed several other watchers standing in fields much like her partner stood in the middle of the field at the end of the road. The week was upon them, and the day grew nearer.
“What took you so long?”, he voiced while crouching down to set up the telescope. His slender body and long arms fiddled with the cables descending from the telescope assembly, “You know I need the van for power to the laptop.”
“You knew I wouldn’t miss this for the world,” she removed her visor letting her beautiful brown hair flow and shine in the suns, “but how are we going to do anything just sitting out here in the field?” She handed him one end of a worn, orange extension cord and walked off towards the van. Little birds circled around above watching the humans work below them. “You really think we’ll see it from out here?”, she yelled back towards the other end of the cord, “even without our observatron?”
“Yeah,” he yelled as he plugged his laptop in and set it upon a makeshift table of cardboard and plastic milk crates, “and we don’t need you jinxing us any more…knock on wood.”
She plugged the cord into the power converter, then raised a hand to tap the faux wood dashboard, “Knock on wood!” she yelled back. The day was unevenly warm, getting gradually colder as the storm front moved closer. Winds of change began to blow kicking up loose dust in small tornadoes that died as they reached the minivan’s tires.
“Very funny. Hey, bring the phase equalizer and the time-lapse camera”, he fumbled with a small hat-umbrella he had found in the milk crate and placed it balanced on the end of the telescope helping to provide shade for the small weathered computer. She walked up behind him carrying the equipment he had requested.
“Hungry?” she asked as she pulled out a ripe, green apple from her knapsack. She sat in the grass, and watched him mess with the instruments intricately connecting all components together and waiting for Linux to power up. The telescope’s motor came to life as Linux completed its startup, and moved into place facing towards the northern elevation just past the sun. Data began pouring into the computer, and he slid back to meet her next to her knapsack.
“What ya got?” he riffled through the knapsack and produced a heavy orange, “Nisian?”
“Yup,” she took a juicy bite out of the apple and continued, “Rosy brought it back from Central Plaza.”
“How is Rosy? I heard she was on a quest of some sort through the Central Plaza. Too bad she couldn’t join us today down here…she doesn’t know what she’s missing.”
“She’s okay, and she’s not missing much, just the onset of a storm. Did you bring me all the way down here just to watch a storm roll in?” She took another bite from her apple, and reclined back onto the grass.
“No, there’s more. I know it. I tell you, what Rosy’s looking for and what I’m looking for are greatly related.”
“You don’t even know what she’s looking for,” she sat up and squinted up towards the northern sun, “it’s just the same showers we have every year. What makes this year so special?”
“It’s not the showers this year, it’s something more.” Tom sat backwards onto the soft field and watched the storm clouds start to move in. “I can feel it.”

Chapter One: Clouds

The telescope whirred around to face them, then moved around to face the main cityscape. Circles and databases came to life on the laptop’s screen while the telescope moved upward to face the main storm cloud. Tom leaped up from his supine position, and stared meticulously at the data appearing on the screen. Crystle rolled over onto her stomach and watched the tufts of dirt flying around the van. The van is going to get dirty, she thought.
“I knew it!” Tom screamed as he pointed at the screen, finger shaking with excitement. He shoved Crystle’s leg, “I told you! I told you that there was something going on!”
Crystle rolled over onto her back, and sat up to peruse the data. The second sun began to crest the horizon, nightfall becoming imminent. The computer began to graph the data producing a conundrum of numbers and figures that only the two of them could decipher. The disturbances on the computer showed a large metallic object several miles above them hurtling down towards them at an amazing speed measuring several miles across heading towards the southern end of Edge City County. “Maybe it’s a fluke. Maybe it’s a ship.”
Tom sat down and began typing furiously on the little laptop, his hair falling into his eyes as the wind began to pick up slightly. The small tornados beneath the tires of the van dissipated into low-lying dust clouds rushing around the road. Other people in the field began running around excitedly gathering computers, telescopes and equipment, and heading back towards their vehicles. Third sun on the horizon; nightfall waiting just beyond it.
“I don’t think so,” answered Tom as he searched through the data for coordinates and estimated time of impact, “it seems to be headed toward the center of the City.” He tapped Crystle’s shoulder, her figure now facing the masses running towards their vehicles, “what’s wrong?”
She stood up, covering her eyes from the low-lying red third sun and the kicked up dirt, and watched the droves of enthusiasts scurry towards their vehicles and promptly speed off towards the cities. The air smelled sweet, like the dew upon the elken trees near Ryan’s home in Erdu. Then, she remembered that Ryan had not made it that morning. She gazed down at Tom, “Did you notice that Ryan didn’t make it today?”
He stood up to meet her and looked down the road past their minivan, “No, I hadn’t. Maybe he decided not to come. You know we’ll get a letter from him later, being that he doesn’t like using the telephone or globalnet.” He looked back at the computer and brushed his hair away from his eyes, then turned and walked hurriedly back towards the van. At the van, he stopped at the front passenger seat and searched the glove compartment. Yelling back towards Crystle, “Where did you put the phase equalizer?”
Crystle looked down at her backpack, knelt down and picked up the small rectangular appliance. She yelled back while holding it up, “This? It’s right here.” She turned it on and began scanning the region, “Whoa. Come here, look at this!” She sat on the moist earth as the third sun completely set behind her, the two moons above now providing a washed white light for the region. Tom turned to face the hill watching as the last of the others moved over the hill into a purplish haze. Storm cloud? At this time of year? That low?, he thought. The lights in the towering structures of Business Plaza in Edge City were just beginning to flicker on, nightlife starting anew with the descent of the three suns and the ascent of the two moons. The new city that never sleeps.
Tom began walking back, but stopped at the sound of gravel and dirt being kicked up by an approaching vehicle, headlights turned off. He walked towards the back of the van and watched the vehicle glide clumsily down the hill, off the road and into a tree. “Shit,” he yelled towards Crystle, “some car just crashed into a tree! I’m going to check it out, you stay here.” He started running down the dirt road, dust kicking up and contributing to the low-lying dust clouds, running towards the small car. As he drew closer, he began to recognize the vehicle. Ryan? All sounds left him, and his rhythmic breathing as he sped up his pace towards the vehicle was all he heard. As he approached the incapacitated vehicle, he noticed there was no occupant in the vehicle. He stopped in his tracks, “What? This is Ryan’s car. Where’s Ryan?” His phone began to ring.
Tom reached for his pocket only to discover the phone had fallen out a few feet behind him. He continues his approach to the disabled vehicle with no occupant. The vehicle came to life as he stepped closer—lights came on, engine revved then idled, radio fizzled back on to a slow classical tune, the airbag and safety foam deployed—and Tom’s phone continued to ring in the dust behind him. He tapped the contact on his earpiece.
“Hello?” The voice on the other end fizzled in and out, but communicated in tones of otherworldly origins.
“Thomas. Step away from the vehicle, and look towards the top of the hill. Go to the top; there you shall receive your answer.”
“What answer? Who is this? Why?” he was interrupted by the voice of eternal existence again.
“Go to the top of the hill, and gaze towards the city. Go to the top of the hill, and gaze towards the heavens. Go to the top of the hill, and you’ll have your answer.” The voice trailed off, and the call ended promptly. Tom leaned against the trunk of Ryan’s car and looked up the hill following the trail of gravel left by the car up towards the purplish-blue haze near the top. A bright towering light shot up towards the sky from the middle of Edge City’s downtown before dissipating into a single spot high above. His feet buckled beneath him, and he fell onto the ground behind the car, his hand landing on a smooth rectangular object. The object reflected the moons’ beams with an absolute splendor only reserved for the most cherished luxuries of the mainland of old; it felt cold to the touch and possessed a quality of mystery only inherent to the dwellings of Erdu. He held it up to the light of the main moon, and gazed up towards the top of the hill. The object’s center rotated and became known as an apparent mobile data recorder. He stood from his place, and slinked slowly towards the bottom of the hill.
“Tom!” Crystle yelled at him as she ran up the trail. Her hair flowing behind her as she ran carrying the laptop under her arm, kicking up dust and closing in on her lab partner. She saw his phone lying dust-covered on the ground, picked it up, and continued her pace towards Ryan’s car.
Tom turned around holding the device in a closed fist before placing it in his pants’ pocket. He walked towards his lab partner—slowly at first, then increasing his pace to meet her slightly in front of the vehicle. The car’s lights slowly faded, the engine puttered to a low purr before dying again, the radio silenced—Tom walked slowly up to Crystle. He took the laptop from her arms and opened it revealing a satellite image of a giant object over the island. He leaned in to whisper, “I told you.”
He dropped the computer and ran towards the minivan. She stood watching him before she picked up the computer and ran towards the van following him.

Chapter Two: Isis

Tom arrived at the van, extension still trailing out towards the field, and motioned towards Crystle. "I'm disconnecting the cord, we'll come back for everything in a second," he paused as she neared the vehicle, "on second thought, I have an errand to run, you stay here."

"What?" she yelled as she neared the back of the van. Tom jumped and turned the vehicle around driving quickly past her towards the hill. She stopped next to the extension cord still holding the laptop and watched her lab partner head towards the base of the hill. Isis, the main moon, lit up the scene in front of her as the van neared the base of the hill. Except for the sounds of the dirt and gravel beneath the tires of the van, the field was relatively quiet. She sighed, and sat down on the rough dirt opening the laptop computer in her lap. The machine continued to download data from the telescope as she turned to glance towards the van now making its way up the hill.

Tom removed the silvered object from his pants and switched on the headlights as he drove towards the purple haze; his heart began to pound as he neared then the voice interjected his thoughts again.

"Thomas..." it began in ethereal celestial tones, "leave the van here, and continue to the haze on foot. All shall be well."

"What if," he started whispering as the van began to lose speed and power itself off, "I'd prefer to stay in the van?" But his question welcomed no reply, and the van powered off rolling into the embankment on one side of the road. He hesitantly sat in the vehicle, then stepped out onto the gravel before turning to glance down to Crystle. She made eye contact with him and waved, then she pointed towards the telescope. He turned to watch the telescope point up towards Isis, his gaze following the instrument up towards the main moon. The purple haze began to gather at his feet as he watched the moon increase its light before focusing a single beam of moonlight down towards the center of Edge City. He turned to watch the beam, but his gaze immediately became obstructed by the purple haze.

Crystle watched as the cloud slowly enveloped Tom. She stood up and started walking towards the hill leaving the computer behind on the ground, the soft whirring of the telescope's motor in the distance, a small breeze picking up around her. "Tom!" she yelled towards the hill. No answer. A low rumbling sound forced her to glance up towards Isis.

Just beyond Isis, a small reddish mass hung in the evening sky piercing through the gathering rainclouds. She shielded her eyes from the moonlight, and watched the object grow in size as it appeared to be nearing the surface. Shit, she thought as she started running towards the van. "Tom! It's coming! Tom!" she continued running towards the hill, towards the van, but she was interrupted by a single ringing in her ears.

As if her breath had been taken away from her, she sighed heavily stopping just before Ryan's Electriz. An eerie sense of calm and relaxation overflowed her being as the scene before her slowly faded away. Her body almost weightless, her breathing slow and shallow, she stood motionless overcome by an ethereal outside energy.

"Crystle..." a soft female-like voice started to fill her inner thoughts, "do not worry about Thomas or Ryan. I shall protect them both; I shall protect you. Trust me, and don't fight this..." The voice melted into the inner recesses of her mind, her soul feeling that she could trust this entity. She slowly turned her head to see a vast red mist quickly approaching her. Her heart began to race, then the soothing voice returned.

"Trust me..." She closed her eyes and relaxed into the warmth of the voice, her body falling limply to the ground as the red mist closed in on her.

Crystle awoke later that evening on a soft bed overlooking a large skylight. She tried to sit up, but couldn't move. A man dressed in a long, white coat walked around her examining her with a small medical device. He was a tall man, mustached with a small goatie-type beard, and piercing silvered and white eyes. He moved the device slowly over her body, the small beeps and lights swirling on its case, and reached into his coat to show her a small badge. She couldn't focus on it immediately, and resorted to watching the sky just beyond the skylight. It was too clear to be Zedari, but not too bright to be Erdu.

A small, warm smirk appeared on the man's face before he walked to the other side of the vast white room. She had visited the hospitals in Edge City, and had never seen any of them look so clean and white as this one--if she was at the hospital. She swallowed saliva, then slowly spoke in the general direction of the man, "Where's my lab partner? Is he okay?"

The man shifted his instruments around, then walked back over to Crystle helping her to sit up on the bed. Judging by the eyes, and the slight pigmentation of his skin, the airiness of the room, and his clothes, she determined that his triple helix must have been Venitian. He held out his gloved hand motioning for her to receive the small pill hidden in his palm. She held out her hand accepting the pill, and swallowing it before he could tell her what it was.

"I found no one else. You're fortunate that I happened to pass through there this afternoon," he paused to examine a small vial he had removed from a medical machine across the room, "what were you doing out in Zedari during the showers alone?"

Alone?, she thought, where did the rest of them go? Her thoughts shifted to the university instruments and the university vehicle. "I wasn't alone. Did you find a vehicle, laptop and telescope perhaps?"

He pulled a chair from across the room and sat down in front of her, his eyes staring intently into hers, "No. There was nothing more there than yourself underneath an elken tree. At first, I thought you were dead, but noticed that you were still breathing." He reached for her hand, but she moved it away. She slowly stood from the bed and walked towards a window on the opposite end of the room. The sun's warmth filtering through it, she watched a sprawling highway just beyond teaming with vehicles merge its way through the towering buildings. This isn't Edge City, though she thought.

"Where am I? Who are you?" she asked watching a bird fly over the structures outside. In the distance, a small sign came into focus, "Gregorian Bank, San Angeles". She shuddered, and turned to see the man standing near the door.

"I'm sorry, but I was on my way here," he started locking the door, "and I didn't think you'd mind." He stood near the door, moving his coat aside to display a medium sized staff anchored to his belt. She felt her pockets for anything she could use, but found nothing except Tom's cell phone.

"What do you want?" she yelled at him producing the cell phone into her hands. He moved towards the bed before speaking again.

"You're a scientist at the Edge City University, aren't you?", she nodded as he spoke, "Can you explain the showers phenomena to me? You see," he began as he sat on the bed looking up towards the skylight, "the showers are the only natural occurance on the entire planet, and I want to know why. Probably as much as you do."

She lowered the phone hiding it back into a pocket, then walked towards the man, "Yes, since all weather on this artificial planet is controlled artificially, it's very amazing that we have anything naturally occuring like the showers. What's your name?"

He stood from his position and push a contact on a nearby console, the door unlocking in front of him, "There will be time for that later. Take this," he handed her a mobile transporter unit, "and use it to get back to your home. It's the fastest mode of transport without venturing into the city." As soon as her hands touched the device, she was transported to her offices in Edge City at the University.

"Wait," she whispered at her desk overflowing with documents and a note from the Dean of Astrology. She placed the device on her desk and picked up the note.
Dear Thomas and Crystle,

The University van I let you two borrow was returned yesterday night on an autodrive recall, and I sent out two of your students to retrieve the equipment. I don't know where you two have gone since neither of you has made any attempt to contact me. I'm sure you're doing okay, but next time please try to take care of our University equipment. I wouldn't want to lose two of my best scientists.

Please contact me as soon as you get back. I have someone that would like to speak to you on the topic of the showers data we discovered on your laptop.

Regards,

Dean Witter.

She pulled the cell phone out of her pocket, and dialed Tom's home. Nothing. She called Ryan's house next. Myst answered, but Ryan was not home. She placed the phone on Tom's desk and walked towards her desk to inspect the mobile transporter's databanks. It was true, she had spent a number of hours in San Angeles with a Venitian para-human, but why the interest in the showers and her, and how did he know what she did?

Chapter Three: DoxNet

The day before, despite the interruptions and disappearance of both Tom and Ryan, had been productive. She shuffled through the printed data from the laptop, sipping on her Taroxian coffee, sitting at her table in her kitchen overlooking the Great Ocean. A knock at her front door forced her to move from her coziness of home.

She opened the door to find a rather smug looking Pat standing in front of her, he shoved his way in passed her. "I need to talk to you."

"Come in," she started sarcastically closing the door behind her, "what's up?"

He moved to the window peering across the street to the back of Christine's home trying to look beyond to Lee's house. His car was gone meaning that hopefully he was gone as well. "He's still with them," he motioned as he took off his trenchcoat revealing the old Special Ops uniform.

"You still have that! Geez, you never let go of anything, do you?" she gathered her papers and moved back into her chair, "And, no, he's not. You know you all retired at the same time, moved out here, and now he works for HyWire."

He banged his fist on her table knocking over one of the empty coffee cups, rousing Crystle's puppy, Tyr, from his slumber beside the table, "No! I tell you he's still working for them. I know, I have proof." He removed the pilfered identicard from his pocket and slapped it onto the table.

"You stole Lee's identicard!" she picked it up and examined it. Near the bottom, clearly printed, the word "RETIRED" appeared. "See, he's still retired. It says the same thing your i-card does. All ex-government personnel have that stamp. If he was still active," she pocketted the card, "he wouldn't have the stamp."

He replaced his trenchcoat and headed for the door, forgetting the i-card, "I'll prove it to all of you, he's still working for them," and headed out the door. Another adventure with Pat ended, she touched a contact on her kitchen's communicator systems dialing up Lee at HyWire. He was at a meeting, but his receptionist said that she'd tell him that Crystle had his identicard. Pleased with her good deed, she placed the card near her replicator plate and removed Tyr's food from the plate placing it on the ground for the rambunctious yellow and white fluffy puppy. His tails wagged incessantly behind him as he ate his food from his little bowl. She sat at the kitchen table again browsing through an image of the anomaly's data. There was something missing, but she couldn't see it.

But yeah, wow, that is interesting... the plot thickens and Pat is still... well, Pat. The freakiness, and I wonder who the mystery guy is *wink*, I guess I will just have to figure that out.

... and Showers takes the lead, w00t.

She picked up her personal communications device, or PCD, and walked into her backyard. Tyr followed, happily wagging both tails behind him, walking to his little house near a large weeping willow tree overlooking the small bluff over the bay. The sweet breezes of the Great Ocean filled her lungs as she walked barefoot over the soft grass towards a bench she kept near the tree for reading. Tyr sat under the tree, his fluffy head and floppy ears propped to one side, watching a nest of birds frolic in the upper branches. She patted him between his ears and sat at the bench watching some of the neighborhood kids play in the sand and water just below. The morning was slightly quiet, her hair flowing in the breeze, her thoughts drifting with the leaves.

Her PCD broke the daydream with its incessant ringing next to her. She picked it up and propped it on the bench, "Hello?"

"Crystle," the voice on the line sounding vaguely like a really rattled Tom, "I need to speak to you very soon. Can you meet me in Meridian City?"

She was startled to hear Tom's voice, even if it did sound frayed and distant, and she hesitated before answering his request. Her thoughts shifted to her friend, Rosy, whom was on her way to Meridian City to meet up with Tracy.

"Why Meridian City? What happened? Are you alright," the questions couldn't have flowed any faster out of her lips.

"Shh," he scolded through the PCD, "just get out here as soon as you can, and bring the disc." The PCD clicked off displaying a rotating GlobalNet Communications logo. She sat pensively for a moment trying to figure out what had just happened. Tyr sensed her confusion and rested his head at her feet. She looked down into her puppies deep black eyes and sighed before walking towards the wood fence that separated her yard from the edge of the bluff. She glanced back towards her home spying the rotating data display still engaged on her kitchen table, and walked back towards the house.

When she returned to her kitchen, she noticed a familiar figure standing in her driveway. She moved to window, focusing on the man standing in her driveway. It was the man from the night before, and he was holding a pink wooden staff that seemed vaguely familiar. As she opened her front door to greet the man, she remembered where she had seen the staff before.

"I know that staff," she stated coldly standing in her doorway, "it belongs to my friend."

The man turned, his white coat flowing around him, "Yes, I know," he held out his hand towards her and motioned towards an X-Drive minivan sitting in the street, "it shall do you best to come with me, my dear."

She stared at the man's outstretched hand and held back Tyr with her foot as the little puppy growled at the man. "I know," she whispered towards the puppy. She stepped back into her home, and locked the door while activating the security systems. She turned to walk back towards the kitchen, but was startled when the man appeared in front of her.

"Please, it is best of we do this my way," he held Tyr in his hands, craddling the small puppy back and forth, "I did not mean to startle you nor do I mean to bring any harm to you, I merely would like to learn more about the Showers."

She backed up towards her front door searching the room for any potential weapons, her heart pounding from the excitement. "Why me?"

He set down the puppy who ran off towards the backyard, "Why not?"

She followed the Venetian to his minivan and sat quietly as they drove out of Oakridge towards the Paradox Island-Mainland SubTrain tunnel.

He finally spoke, "You see, dear lady, you are quite valuable right now. Whether you know it or not, you are the best educated person on this planet with regards to the Showers. And, you are the sole tie to both retired agents Betts and Almodovar."

She sat there, "No, I'm not."

He depressed a contact on the steering column, "Ah, but you are. Just not in the way you think you are."

The minivan entered the sparse SubTrain tunnel, relinquishing control to the AutoDrive settings in the tunnel, quickly accelerating to just over 150 miles per hour effectively blurring everything in the dimmed tunnel. The SubTrain travelled next to them, in its own compartmentalized track system, at speeds of just under 300 miles per hour headed for the Mainland. She shifted in her seat, watching the rotating holographic display in front of her.

"It's the meteor from our data streams," she sat up, leaning forward to inspect the data, "but why do you have it?"

"Many people have this data, my dear, but very few can interpret it. There are only two people on this planet that can accurately access this data," he placed his soft hand on hers, "yourself and Server One."

She turned to face him, inspecting his eyes, "Okay, but what does that have to do with Pat and Lee? And, how is this related to the showers."

He turned to face the front of the car, "You'll find out in due time. Now, there is still a little over thirty minutes to our trip. I suggest you try to get some rest. You'll need it."

Generally I think you kept character with me alright... though I think a bit more confusion would be more accurate though, especially with the hand thing.
