I'd like to start building my own computer over the rest of this year, piece by piece however. Since I'm in no rush, and already have a few computers myself that can probably hold me off.

So, I think I need to start off with a motherboard.
Any suggestions? I'm pretty clueless where to start, so yeah.

A friend of mine recommended ABIT. This one caught my attention.

It would be beyond foolish to build a computer "piece by piece" over the course of a year.

For instance, if you were to buy a motherboard, in a years time, you'd probably do good to find a processor for it.

Save up about $1000 and ask for advice then.

It is pointless to ask for advice on hardware technology unless you are prepared to make the purchases within that same week.

The technology changes so fast and so quickly.

For example, less than a month ago an AM2 processor didn't even exist. Now you would be a fool not to buy an AM2 processor.

And if you come up with a list of parts, and then you have to recheck it when you actually have the money.... well then I guess you should have just waited to begin with...

which is my point

I can build a good computer from scratch for $300, while bestbuy and Circuit city would ask for about $900...

Heres another reason not no build piece by piece, Say you buy a good motherboard with an AMD Athalon Processor, not only does what ErkDog say is true, its also the fact that you want a motherboard/ Processor thats up to date....if you buy that first, eventually, that motherboard is gonna get out of date, and your gonna be stuck with something thats good, but out of date...Heh, Just like what erkDogsaid...wow, I diddnt need to say that *Slaps face*[/edit]

Yeah I know its seriously annoying, but its true, and if your building a PC, your goal is to get the best of your money's worth...

And now, where does Master Solid Sajin get his computer parts? These guys havent failed me in prices...Newegg.com

A Nivida Gforce 7800 series at bestbuy costs $490 down here. Newegg has it for $190...

Check it out

New Egg rarely has the best prices on things.

Most of my computer purchases end up being from

Axion
monarch computer

and a few others...

I've bought one thing from New Egg in my over 14 yrs of buying computer stuff.

froogle.com
pricewatch.com
labs.anandtech.com

those are the three resources you need to find computer stuff.

You don't want to buy each part from another company though, you end up getting raped by shipping.

If you find a company with free shipping depending on how much you buy from them, that can save you a good bit by itself.

Solid, you cannot build a GOOD computer for $300.

A Good power supply costs $60 at least by itself.

You expect me or anyone else to believe you can get a

Mother Board, Processor and Ram for less than 240? Lol.

And then whoops you still have to buy a video card and harddrive.

I just build a bare bones system for my mother which ran about $900.

That also included $140 for Windows XP, so really it cost $760.

So yeah, get at least 900 or so saved up Xeo and then buy a computer.

Make sure you read articles on www.anandtech.com religiously in the mean time.

I do have quite a bit of money though.

I just don't really want to buy premade stuff, because interest will knock you back in the ass afterwards.

I don't know, I just want to be prepared to be able to play Crysis by the end of the summer something.

(Look it up if you haven't seen or heard of it yet. It has, the most powerful FPS engine ever created).
Crysis's engine:

But it does make sense Erk, to have a handful of cash to buy things together rather than piece by piece over time. With this next paycheck I should have at least $700 or so on debit, and I have quite a bit in my savings but that's for school ...

But I really have to keep most of my savings, my parents don't have that much to help me through college. So yeah.

I have lots of money, but interest kills you on prebuilt computers...

okay if you had lots of money you wouldn't be paying interest, because you'd pay for it up front.

cmon now xeo

anyway... when you can spend $900 on a computer I'll help you figure out what you need to buy
