I know there's AVG out there ... but, when I googled that I also got sites containing info that there's another AVG out there, that messes things up with your Startup or something. So, I'll just be safe for now and wait on that.

So basically, does anyone know of any good free anti-virus programs out there? I'm not talking about Adaware, Spybot, or Hijack This (already have all of those), but real software that does much more and searches deeper, etc.

clamwin

AVG free edition

Clamwin does a deeper scan but does not have on site protection which is what avg is for. Mind you clamwin isn't even version 1.0 yet so there is a lot of stuff to be added. Its open source so who can argue with that?

AVG Free Edition.

It's good. It doesn't mess up shit, unless, of course, your computer's already messed up to begin with. We use them on our computers at Sony, of course, we've got the full licensed corporate edition, but I've got free at home and its just as good. You can't fail with something that auto-updates itself with free updates. And checks your incoming and outgoing Outlook mail.

And generally scans everything that's being accessed on your PC. You can find it on Download.com - AVG Free Edition. And the other pieces of software you listed are not antiviri software--they're anti-spyware software. Two different, yet similar, things.

Pretty much exactly why I said "I'm not talking about [etc]".

But yeah, downloaded AVG. I used it in the past, on our old computer. It definitely wasn't bad.

Macs aren't totally impervious to viri and worm attacks. They're just less likely to get one since most are targeted at the flaws of Windows-based machines. But on that note, there is another solution: Linux (or any other version of it).

But, stop taking my role of being an ass. That's my job, not yours.

Well, it looks like your in for some job competition.

Anyways, I might use Linux if I knew how to use it. But my OS of choice is Mac. I'm not going to say macs are always the best, but for most situations it is the better choice.

Hey smartasses, next time I'll note FOR WINDOWS.

What, Xeo can't be an ass?

Someday I'll get a cheap Mac for Garage Band. I have had for the past couple of months, this one cheap computer I bought from a friend for like $100. 20 GB Hardrive, 300 some DDR ram, 1.6 ghz Processor ... honestly, that's all I can think of off the top of my head, because again I haven't turned it on for months. I was going to probably make a thread for suggestions on what to do with it though.

Maybe I could try my luck with Linux, or test out Vista Beta, or break it!

I think it was a good deal though, came with a nice 19' monitor, keyboard and mouse, speakers, everything basically for a standard working computer probably.
