Do you know what's the joyous occassion? I'm probably not getting into college, so to hell with all those plans of learning japanese, playing in an orchestra, getting a major in political science, and all that crap. I might as well toss out the calculus textbooks, physics texts, and stop bothering to read IEEE magazines--that doesn't help much working at some shitty job for the remainder of my life, no? Might as well sell off the Eastman and literary collection, minimum wage isn't too much I hear. To hell with debate team, that doesn't help flipping burgers, or so I hear. Why refurbish computers for the needy, I'll soon be one of them, anyways?

Dude, you need to calm down. Sorry about not getting into college, but just because you don't go, doesn't mean you'll end up at burger king. Do you think that everyone around you went to college? No. Besides, there are plenty of other options. You can go to a community college, and then do a transfer program in two years. You'll have a much better chance then. Hell, I might even do that. So just take a deep breath, and calm down.

Well...that could be the problem. Why are you complaining that you didn't get in, if you didn't apply?

Because I won't get in. And concerning what you said about

By the time I've finished high school, I'll probably have finished the brunt of the first two years. It's just that the experience of disabilitating circumstances are heavily maginalized in the education system, they simply don't care. It's ironic though, how my college GPA so far is higher than my weighted GPA.

Chill, seriously. Apply at a community college, get your shit done there, and transfer. It's generally auto-acceptance into a 4 year university for transfers as long as you've maintained a C average or better. It's what I did.

Also, how do you know that you won't get in if you do not apply? People call me pessmistic, but you just took the cake. What makes you think you won't get in? And what the hell was the meaning of the response to the Community college thing? I didn't understand what you meant at all until "they simply don't care".

Okay, in hindsight, I see that I was rather vague and ranting. What I mean to say is what I see in the college system is the marginalization of me. What is "me" is made petty, my struggles, achievements and beliefs, they are lost in a set of three digits and a decimal point and another string of four meaningless digits. More or less, what I'm saying is that they look at a GPA and SAT, perhaps a few grades, and look past the person--anyone can get a 4.who-gives-a-shit, given ideal circumstances. But does that constitute intelligence, or creativity? Only under a more accomplished educational system, I would think, as the current one only looks at how well one can conform to a set of given standards.

You know what your problem is, you have the ability to see everything as black and white. Go to a community college if you have to, and if you want to apply to a different college, apply yourself. I'm going to community, and I'm not the only one who's doing it. It's cheaper(so you can afford it with two part time jobs or one full time job on minimum wage.) And it can be a good use of your time. And sure, other colleges look at grades and stuff, but they also want to see a well-rounded individual. Either way, stop beating yourself up and just deal with it.

Have you taken your SAT yet? Did you get a decent score? What was your score?

I got only an 1190 and I could have got into UCLA if I had wanted to. They do look into more than just GPA and SAT, though those are important. If you excell in something (sports for example), there are full ride scholarships... same goes for wanting to get into certain fields (teaching for example).

Also, going back to the Community College part, they ask what your GPA and SAT scores were, but that is just for your records, they accept you no matter what.

Generally, intelligence and creativity come into play getting scholarships to pay for college rather than admissions. Hence why nearly all of them want essays, stories, etc.

Too bad there are so many scholarships in sports, and so little in academics, when sports really doesn't have anything to do with a career for the majority, or so it would seem. So yeah, I can't do sports.

Yea, sports scholarships are a waste, but then again most academic scholarships are a waste because of people who just expect to be handed scholarships and stuff so they can drop out of college in a year and waste all the funding they would have gotten. I bet you didn't even apply for any scholarships, just so you could complain about not getting one. Good show, you're truly a shining example of humankind.

I meant that sports is without practical use in a career situation whereas Speech is not. I have no plan of dropping out of or not going to college, I'm just rather down looking at my future expectations. Don't be mean.

I did. But I don't have the benefit of associations that others have, it's not exactly a original position that we as people live in.

I'm not being mean, I'm treating you wiht the exact same amount of respect and adoration as you have treated everyone else in this thread and this message board. You are pessimistic therefore, aren't all of us at times? Suck it up, things either get better or they explode in your face. C'est la Vie.

Wow...i have been keeping my eye on this thread for some time, because i remember being in almost the exact place you are in during my senior year....infact my posts on the message boards i frequented at the time sounded more or less identical to yours (seems like nobody's problems are unique anymore; population saturated the market a while back, but i digress..) the best advice i can give you is to break up the idea of getting into college into its component parts. first make sure you have your transcripts all together when you leave highshcool and go directly to a community college councilor, these people will tell you for free what you need to do to get into a four year college, and they are also good for pointing you towards scholarships you are eligible for. and as long as you have your transcripts some of what you may have already taken would count for what you need to take. After that, sign up for classes, look into tutoring in the areas you arent so good at so that you can give them the old spit-shine grade-wise. Jobs are hard to come by but there is a good chance you qualify for something? ...you mentioned you refurbish computers, you could always buy old crappy computers, update them a bit and sell them on ebay...or trade them on craigslist for macaroni.... anywho the point i am trying to make here is that if look for options then they are ALWAYS there and only pessimistic thinking or a blindfold can keep you from seeing them ...(i realize i sound like a motivational poster on a school library at this point but it is true)...any situation is only what you make of it, so *shudders at the corny sounding thing i am about to say*.....make the best of it

Logos, it was an error in which I was typing one thought, deleted(almost) all of that thought, and didn't notice the error until you pointed it out. It should have read:

"I'm not being mean, I'm treating you wiht the exact same amount of respect and adoration as you have treated everyone else in this thread and this message board. You are pessimistic, aren't all of us at times? Suck it up, things either get better or they explode in your face. C'est la Vie."

Just never give up. What can you possibley accomplish that way? Even if you're getting shit on by everyone, prove them wrong. Hell, if you have to, prove yourself wrong. No matter how bad it seems, you only make it worse by having a negative attitude (and that's coming from a master pessimist).

Anyway, good luck on your goals!

There are academic scholarships as well, you just need to work for them. Check out FastWeb.com, they are pretty good at finding scholarships of all types.

Let me put it this way: I wouldn't want to be accepted because of my SAT score, becuase it's a test that doesn't really look for intelligence, but thinking a certain way. In same token, I wouldn't want to be accepted into a college because of my GPA, because the current system doesn't weigh actual college classes, whereas the easier "honors" at high school are weighted. Getting a 5.0 in such classes is the norm not the exception. Is one really doing "excellent" if everyone is doing "excellent?" How can one be above average, if everyone is above average. What the hell?
